Hostel Pangea - Costa Rica - Bed Bug Attack
just a short vid to show the damage that can be done by bed bugs. f*king painful too i might add. If anyone wants to know the way to alleviate the pain - scorching hot water! its a temporary remedy for the itching. But seriously, don't bother staying at hotel pangea in san jose in costa rica. The matresses were disgusting.

Walking stick insect which we saw in a very hidden spot in Carite forest in Puerto Rico near the Charco Azul area. Even though it is very overpopulated, Puerto Rico offers many hidden spots deep in forests, because the road system is luckily bad in them and there are few hiking trails. Thus, nature is protected due to few people going to thickets of saw grass and other fun stuff.
Manzanillo Point - Costa Rica Adventure - Makai's World Family Travel
Manzanillo, Costa Rica is a beautiful town situated on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica just north of the Panamanian border. It is a very small town but also a very beautiful town that brings in visitors from all over the world to enjoy its amazing views, warm Caribbean waters, and delicious Caribbean food.
But how do you get there? Well, you could find someone with a boat or a seaplane to give you a ride (highly unlikely), you could hike through the jungle from Panama (ridiculously dangerous), or take the road from Puerto Viejo. We would suggest taking the road from Puerto Viejo because, well... it just makes sense for the average traveler and we will tell you the different ways of how to get to Manzanillo from Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.
*You can read more about how to get to Puerto Viejo from the Makai's World Travel Blog at:

7 Unexpected Things In Costa Rica
This video is about things we didn’t know about or expect when we planned our trip to Costa Rica. There are always surprises when you go to new countries so we’d like to share unexpected things with you!

Our unexpected things included:
It was more expense than we expected., Costa Rica is still considered a third world country, which means that the poor far outnumber the middle class so we expected things like accommodations and car rentals to be much cheaper. However, be prepared to pay North American prices for these things. There are budget options for accommodations like hostels and cheaper hotels but if you’re not looking to travel on a budget, it isn’t that cheap. Eating out at local sodas (local restaurants) is inexpensive costing only $4-$7 a meal and the food is so delicious!
It takes a lot longer to get places that we expected. The distances are quite short as Costa Rica is a small country but roads are usually windy, slower and some are unpaved and single lane. It took us often twice the time we expected to get anywhere. We also got lost using the wrong App so when you’re there make sure you use WAZE.
Parking Security - something you will pay for when visiting popular beaches and national parks. A lot attendant will charge you to watch over your car while you are away. Always have some cash on hand for this and the cost is only a couple hundred colones.
If you are looking for decaf Coffee, you will have a hard time. Costa Rica proudly grows their own coffee beans and it is a major export. I think decaf is thought as inferior coffee so they don’t have much of it around.
Scorpions glow at night. This was such a fun find for us! They glow blue-green under a black light from a coating in their exoskeleton. Plus scorpions in Costa Rica are NOT deadly.
Night walks are a fun activity to do as you learn a lot about the animals in Costa Rica. The rainforest really comes alive at night too!
Airport Departure Tax is not usually covered on your airline ticket and you will have to pay it at a special counter at the airport before checking in for your flight. Beware of scammers trying to charge you and double check your ticket just to make sure it isn’t already included. The cost was $29 US per person.
We hope these insights of our unexpected things will help you in your trip planning to this truly amazing country!

Not One but TWO Hog-nosed Vipers at La Selva
This video was taken after Tony and I had just spotted two vipers on the side one of the trails at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. We had been conducting trials for our independent project studying the presence of kleptoparasitic spiders in the webs of golden orb weaving spiders (Nephila clavipes). We were on our way to another web when tony saw the smaller viper moving to our left, away from the path. I was very excited and started taking pictures and was stepping all around the snake to get some good shots. I backed away to watch the snake for a bit when almost at the same time Tony and I noticed that there was an even larger viper 2 feet away from the one we were watching. And at that moment it also dawned on me that I had been stepping directly in front of this viper while I was trying to photograph the other. We initially thought they were Fer de Lances because they are very common at La Selva and I wasn't familiar with Costa Rican snakes. Later, after consulting our guide books and my Costa Rican herp buddy, Diana, we determined that they were hog-nosed vipers due to the characteristic tipped nostril. I mention the nostril in the video and although it i difficult to see you can make out the characteristic. Any ideas why there where two in one place?

Costa Rica - Holding a Tailless Whip Scorpian
Our first night at La Paloma, we went on a night tour with Tracie the Bug Lady to learn about the nocturnal rainforest. Tracie gave a fantastic tour, and we saw a bunch of spiders and insects. This fellow, although scary looking is actually a completely harmless tailless whip scorpian. I still wasn't super excited to hold him, but no way was Shannon going to volunteer.
