Pro-Ukrainian rally in Kiev, culture minister speaks; pro-Ukrainian rally cancelled in Donetsk
Ukraine on Sunday solemnly commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of its greatest poet, Taras Shevchenko, as separatists in Crimea kept up pressure for the region's unification with Moscow.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Independence Square in the centre of the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Sunday to mark the poet's birthday, and to rally to support an undivided Ukraine.
Ukrainian Culture Minister Yevhen Nyshchuk addressed the crowd gathered around the statue to writer and nationalist Shevchenko.
A choir sang, and people laid bouquets at the monument to the son of peasant serfs who is considered the father of modern Ukrainian literature and a national hero.
Nyshchuk spoke of those who lost their lives during the clashes between the pro-European protesters and the special forces in February in Kiev.
The words of (Taras) Shevchenko were in the eyes, hearts and thoughts of those boys, aged 16, 17, 18, 19, who left their classrooms and ran right towards the snipers' bullets, he said.
One man who attended the rally suggested that Shevchenko's image should be used in every stamp and passport visa to honour the poet.
Meanwhile, in the in eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, a rally in support of an undivided Ukraine was called off on Sunday, as hundreds of pro-Russian demonstrators disrupted the construction of the stage.
Riot police then asked people to leave the square to avoid further trouble.
Senior opposition figure Vitali Klitschko was expected to attend the pro-Ukrainian rally.
The pro-Russian demonstrators then gathered outside the Ukrainian Security Service building and cheered as a man climbed up onto the parapet and took down the Ukrainian flag, replacing it with a Russian flag.

Kiev residents on outcome of Minsk talks
Many Ukrainians were sceptical that the peace deal agreed in Minsk would stop the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
According to the agreement between Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany, guns will fall silent, heavy weapons will pull back from the front, and Ukraine will trade a broad autonomy for the east for control of the Russian border by the end of the year.
But one Kiev resident said she believes the fighting will continue, despite the new deal, but added that she remains hopeful in the long term.
Another resident also thought that the violence will not stop until the Ukrainian-Russian border is closed.
The Ukrainian military spokesman said that fighting continued on Wednesday overnight, while the four leaders were holding the peace talks in Minsk.
Andriy Lysenko said that pro-Russia rebels were seen crossing the border into eastern Ukraine in the area of Izvarino.
He added that separatists shelled the government-held town of Debaltseve, damaging the infrastructure and some buildings in the area.
While the four leaders hailed the agreement, it became immediately clear that Russia and Ukraine continued to disagree on how to end fighting around Debaltseve, a key transport hub between the two main rebel-controlled eastern cities.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the rebels consider the Ukrainian forces surrounded and expect them to surrender, while Ukraine said its troops have not been blocked.

Rival rallies reflect the great divide in Ukraine
Rival rallies have been attended by thousands in Ukraine reflecting the deep divisions within the country.
In the Crimean city of Simferopol statues of national poet Taras Shevchenko and that of Lenin symbolised the pro-unity and pro-Russia divide.
Elsewhere in the eastern city of Donetsk, home to many Russian speakers and also that of deposed president Viktor Yanukovych, people called for independence from Kyiv .
Pro-Russian demonstrations in Donetsk were among the first to erupt last week just as Russian President Vladimir Putin declared he had the right to invade Ukraine to protect Russian citizens.
In Kyiv organisers of a well attended rally to mark the 200th birth anniversary of Taras Shevchenko had hoped it would pull the country together.
Members of Ukraine's newly formed government were joined by former Russian oil tycoon and Putin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
The message while defiant against the Kremlin was also that Ukraine was one family and must remain so.
