The Puffing Billy & The Tarka Trail Torrington North Devon England UK
The Puffing Billy, which is in Great Torrington is at present a very nice cafe/restaurant/bar which runs alongside the Tarka Trail, but it's history starts back in 1870 when it was constructed as a two platform station.. The first train ran in 1871 and sadly the last in 1983, between which times the line was used for both passengers and freight traffic.. This place is a very nice place to visit, and the location is even better.. i used to ride my mountain bike on the Tarka Trail, which is a disused railway line, and i believe it goes on in total for about 180 miles, but i am not 100% sure on it's actuall distance... Thanks for watching...

Hiking Through Tunnel, Tarka Trail, Bideford To Torrington, North Devon, UK.
Went for a little hike with my son along the Tarka trail, and was on the stretch between Bideford and Torrington, and this is one of my favourite parts of the Tarka trail.. While out on our hike we went through this tunnel, and it's good that this tunnel now has some lights in it, as it was in complete darkness the last time i went through it...

Tarka Trail cycle path, North Devon, from nr Petrockstowe to Braunton, then Ilfracombe
I've just returned from a week's cycling in North Devon and Dartmoor! Join me cycling the Tarka Trail railway path in North Devon from just north of Petrockstowe (near Meeth, the southern end of the trail) to Great Torrington (including the Puffing Billy cafe at the old Great Torrington Railway Station), Bideford, Instow, Barnstaple and Braunton, and then onto Ilfracombe via the old Barnstaple & Ilfracombe railway, now a cycle path. The Tarka Trail forms the northern part of the superb Devon Coast to Coast (National Cycle Network Route 27).
The Tarka Trail is a traffic-free 32 mile cycle trail which runs from Braunton to Meeth in North Devon (and includes the former Barnstaple - Bideford railway line). Most of the cycle path is on tarmac but the first section is gravel. I have omitted the road section between Braunton and Mortehoe (where the Ilfracombe rail path starts) – you can see that on another video.
The cycle path isn’t entirely flat – there are gradients, the most notable being the Ilfracombe railway path on the return trip from Ilfracombe to (above) Mortehoe – this video only shows the downhill section to Ilfracombe, but the uphill return isn’t as bad as I thought it would be! (I easily did it in second gear.)
This video was filmed on 3 different days – hence the weather changes! You can see each individual section (including road sections) on other videos.

Walking the Tarka Trail in North Devon
The Tarka Trail is perfect for walking and cycling and it's pushchair and wheelchair friendly. We enjoyed an eight mile walk from Instow to just short of Torrington and back.
The scenery is absolutely stunning and it's a nice flat path so ideal for all abilities. The highlight of the walk was the long dark tunnel!
Barnstaple to Ilfracombe (& back) via Tarka Trail & Ilfracombe Railway Path
Join me cycling the northern section of the Tarka Trail from Barnstaple railway station to Braunton, then on-road up and down the hills to the Ilfracombe railway path and to Ilfracombe seafront. This is the northern section of the Devon Coast-2-Coast (C2C or Coast-to-Coast) and National Cycle Network Route #27. This is a there-and-back cycle ride: 33.48 miles with an elevation gain of 2,180 ft.
You get a choice of routes with NCN route 27: there’s a mountain bike route which follows the old railway line after Braunton but it’s not suitable for road bikes. I tried it in June, but was forced to back-track when the surface became particularly challenging! You also get a ‘via the coast’ route a bit further along, via the pretty village of Georgeham, which I did back in June. It takes you along the coastal path which is fairly rocky and may not suit some road bikes. There is also a hike up the hill at the end to the Ilfracombe rail path. So on this particular ride, I stuck to the hill-top route.
I long avoided the Ilfracombe railway path because I thought it would be punishingly steep on the drag out of Ilfracombe, a North Devon seaside resort not exactly known for being flat!!!!! But I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s fairly easy-going and the downhill run towards Ilfracombe is stunning. I got lost in Ilfracombe (first time I’ve been there), but eventually found the sea front. The NCN route signposts can be a bit confusing.
Braunton is where I first got the bug for cycling as an adult of ‘a certain age’, a few years back. I’d signed up for a surfing course at Croyde Bay just along the road from Braunton, but quickly discovered that surfing wasn’t my forte. I spent that summer trying to get fitter for another attempt at surfing – cycling seemed a good option for getting fit so I borrowed my son’s mountain bike.
However I quickly discovered that I loved cycling so much (and was so useless at surfing) that I dumped the surfing, took my bike to Braunton and cycled along the Tarka Trail! And the rest, as they say…
Be sure to check out my bike ride videos and the other (mainly Yorkshire) cycle ride segments - ideal for use at the gym on an indoor trainer, exercise bike, treadmill, cross trainer, etc! Most are in Yorkshire, but some are in Lancashire, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Derbyshire.

Fremington Quay, Barnstaple, North Devon I Tarka Trail Cycle Route | Severn Sands Dredger
Here we visit Fremington Quay an old port on the edge of the River Taw in North Devon. It has been an industrial port for hundreds of years.....More blummin' wind though! It would almost seem that every time I video a place in Devon the wind is blowing! To be honest it is!
Anyway.......
Fremington Quay was once significant in the import and export of many goods. It had railway sidings, cranes, and other apparatus used for the export of ball clay and import of coal. Between the early to mid-twentieth century it was the busiest port (based on tonnage) between Bristol and Land's End. An abattoir was formerly located here. The quay has been redeveloped as an amenity facility with restaurant and provides wide views over the River Taw estuary. It has been a Conservation Area since 1996. (Wikipedia)
The railway is no longer there and is now part of the Tarka Trail a long cycle way in North Devon. The station is now a cafe with a small museum that we assume opens, but never was on the 4 separate occasions we visited, which is a shame!

Who am I? I ask myself this on a daily basis, it's the menopause that causes it!.........Hello! I'm Callie and I live in Devon. I am a parent of an 11 year old and step-mum to 5 fabulous older kids who have all flown the nest on their own life paths. I live with one female ankle biting, apologise after Patterdale cross Jack Russel dog, one angry female rabbit, and 2 broodmares, there's too much of a female pattern here!!! I love sharing my lifestyle - which is currently a lot of me standing in a wet and windy field moaning about the weather, mud and my horses getting wet!
