Tarlair Swimming Pool, Macduff, Aberdeenshire
Tarlair Swimming Pool, Macduff, Aberdeenshire
A look at Macduff, Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK
The port of Macduff lies opposite Banff at the mouth of the River Deveron. Originally known as the sea 'toune' of Doune, the settlement's name was changed to Macduff in 1783 by James Duff, Earl of Fife who built a harbour there.
Macduff took over the fishing trade of the older settlement of Banff and became a significant herring port in the 19th century.
Macduff Shipyards is one of the few remaining shipbuilding and repair centres in North East Scotland and is a significant local employer.
Wooden as well as steel-hulled vessels are still constructed at the shipyard.

Old Photographs Macduff Aberdeenshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of photographs of Macduff, Aberdeenshire. Macduff is a former burgh and is now the only place in the United Kingdom where deep water wooden fishing boats are still built. William Duff became the first Earl Fife. In 1760, James Duff, the second Earl built a harbour here and in 1783 succeeded in promoting Macduff to a Burgh of Barony. The 2nd Earl Fife appointed his factor, William Rose, as the 1st Provost of Macduff in 1783. I hope these photographs are of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
Amazing Aberdeenshire | Next Stop Everywhere
As we enter Aberdeenshire, on the road to Aberdeen itself, we were in for a bit of a treat.
First up we arrived in the Scottish seaside town of Banff (not the famous Canadian Banff you understand!) where we hopped on our bikes and took in the sights and sounds of the Macduff Marine Aquarium and the famed Tarlair Open Air Swimming Pool (the latter now sadly abandoned).
Onwards and in-land-wards, we head to the Grampian Transport Museum, where we admired their stunning collection, and stayed overnight in a very unique motorsport-themed location!
As we head back to the coast, we stopped off for a few days in the fishing port town of Fraserburgh, a rustic kinda place, but with a great caravan park and the fantastic Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, which surprised us with its facts and stories of the Northern Lighthouse Board.
Finally, before we arrive in Aberdeen, we visit another Scottish open air pool, this time one we could actually swim in though! Stonehaven pool is open throughout the summer and we made the most of a dip in its heated seawater depths - lovely!
Enjoy, and join us for our Next Stop... Everywhere!

Long Meg and Her Daughters Stone Circle
Long Meg and Her Daughters Stone Circle
One of the finest stone circles in the north of England, the circle has a diameter of about 350 feet, the second biggest in the country. Long Meg is the tallest of the 69 stones, about 12 feet high, with three mysterious symbols, its four corners facing the points of the compass and standing some 60 feet outside the circle.
Local legend claims that Long Meg was a witch who with her daughters, was turned to stone for profaning the Sabbath, as they danced wildly on the moor. The circle is supposedly endowed with magic, so that it is impossible to count the same number of stones twice, but if you do then the magic is broken.
This was the start of a great walk i highly recommend for all that can get out and do it. I'll attach the route in the next upload as this video is to be continued...

The historic highland fermtoun or settlement at Auchtavan, Glen Fearder in Deeside, Scotland
The settlement at Auchtavan in Glen Fearder near Crathie in the Cairngorms National Park, is a rare survival of a traditional Highland clachan or fermtoun. Abandoned at the end of the 19th century, the glen originally had three townships, but all that remains of Ratlich & Loine are stones, but at Auchtavan, one cottage and the horsemill survive and were restored in 2008 by Braemar Community Limited.
The horsemill remains open for those who wish to visit, but the rare hingin lum cottage and Victorian picnic cottage are only open on a few days each year for people to get a glimpse of these historic buildings. The music with this film is called Farewell to the King written & performed by Paul Anderson from nearby Tarland.

Mountain Bothies Of The Cairngorms
A circular five day hiking trip through Scotland's Cairngorms exploring the mountain bothies in the region.
Cairngorms National Park is located in northeast Scotland. Officially established as a park in 2003, it is Britain’s largest National Park and located within the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The park has a large upland plateau, and is categorised as a “protected landscape” which allows for limited development within its borders.

Please also check out my book 'Bothy Culture' which is available from most online retailers (details and links below).
-----
'Bothy Culture' focuses on exploring the rich subculture that can be found at some of the remotest locations throughout the Scottish wilderness; however, it is much more than that for it is primarily one man's scathing social commentary on what he interprets as a world gone mad. Often funny, controversial and brutally provocative, Mortimer takes no prisoners in explaining his need to regularly get off-grid and escape the urban/suburban sprawl.

Culsh Earth House, Tarland, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
A journey through Scotland's ancient sites

CULSH
EARTH HOUSE
TARLAND
ABERDEENSHIRE
SCOTLAND
NORTH EAST OF TARLAND, ON THE B9119 ROAD IS CULSH EARTH HOUSE. THIS 2000 YEAR OLD IRON AGE SITE CAN BE SAFELY ACCESSED AND IS IN THE CARE OF HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND. A REPORT IN 1874 STATES THERE WERE TWO EARTH HOUSES AT CULSH.
SIMILAR STRUCTURES CAN BE FOUND IN OTHER CELTIC COUNTRIES. WIDESPREAD IN BRITTANY, FRANCE, ARE ’SOUTERRAINS’. A FRENCH WORD MEANING BELOW GROUND. IN CORNWALL, ENGLAND, SIMILAR CHAMBERS ARE CALLED ‘FOGO’S’. A CORNISH WORD FOR CAVE. IRELAND ALSO HAS A HIGH NUMBER OF THESE ENIGMATIC PASSAGES.
THE MAINSTREAM VIEW OF EARTH HOUSES WERE FOR FARMING COMMUNITIES DOMESTIC USE. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN USED AS CELLARS FOR STORING GOODS, GRAIN AND FOOD IN DRY, COOL CONDITIONS. STORAGE CAPACITY WAS BIG, SO THEY MAY HAVE BEEN USED BY A SMALL COMMUNITY.
EARTH HOUSES ARE CONSTRUCTED ENTIRELY OR MOSTLY UNDERGROUND. THEY ARE ATTACHED OR NEXT TO THE HOUSE ABOVE GROUND. THE PASSAGE MAY HAVE HAD RITUAL USAGE FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE.
CULSH WAS REDISCOVERED IN 1853, ALL THE EARTH INFILL WAS EXTRACTED. THE STRUCTURE WAS A LARGE FEAT OF ENGINEERING, SKILL AND LABOUR FOR OUR ANCESTORS. THE SITE IS A LONG CURVING, CRESCENT SHAPED TUNNEL THAT HAS BEEN CUT INTO THE SIDE OF A HILL.
IT IS 14.5M LONG, IS STONE WALLED AND HAS A STONE SLABBED ROOF. THE SOUTH ENTRANCE IS 0.75M WIDE, EXPANDING TO 1.8M WIDE AT THE BACK NORTH EAST WALL AND 1.8M HIGH. TWO CUP MARKS CAN BE FOUND ON THE NORTH WALL. ONE IS AT THE LEFT HAND SIDE, JUST INSIDE THE CHAMBER.
EARTH HOUSES HAVE DIFFERENT DESIGNS IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF SCOTLAND. TAYSIDE HAS LARGE EARTH HOUSES WITH THE ROOF AT GROUND LEVEL. THE NORTHERN ISLANDS HAVE SMALL CHAMBERS WHICH GO UNDERGROUND. THE ABERDEENSHIRE STRUCTURES FALL IN BETWEEN THESE TWO EXTREMES.
THE NORTHERN SCOTTISH CHAMBERS SEEM TO BE THE EARLIEST, CIRCA 2400BC. THE SOUTH AND EAST OF SCOTLAND CHAMBERS WERE ERECTED AROUND THE 1ST & 2ND CENTURY AD.
THE LATER DATES MIRROR THE TIME WHEN THE ROMANS APPEARED IN SCOTLAND. EXCAVATIONS SHOW THE CHAMBERS WERE DELIBERATELY FILLED IN OR DESTROYED AT THE START OF THE 2ND CENTURY AD, SAME TIME THE ROMANS LEFT SCOTLAND.
EARLY EXCAVATIONS FOUND TWO CUP MARKED STONES BUILT INTO THE WALL, A BROKEN URN, OX BONES, A COLLECTION OF SMOOTH PEBBLES AND A LARGE BEAD.
MY ALTERNATIVE THEORY IS THESE PASSAGES MAY BE WOMB TOMB’S INTO MOTHER EARTH. THE SHAMAN AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WOULD ENTER THE CHAMBER FOR PURPOSES SUCH AS HEALING, MEDITATION, INITIATION, COMMUNICATING WITH MOTHER EARTH OR THE ANCESTORS. CEREMONIES CELEBRATING THE HARVEST AND PLANTING OF CROPS MAY HAVE TAKEN PLACE.
AT THE BACK OF THE PASSAGE IS WHAT LOOKS LIKE FOUR FIGURES INCORPORATED INTO THE STONE WORK. FOUR TORSOS AND HEADS CAN BE MADE OUT. COULD THESE REPRESENT THE SPIRIT GUARDIANS OF THE SITE? THE CUP MARKED STONES MAY HAVE ORIGINATED FROM A STANDING STONE, ROCK ART PANEL OR A STONE CIRCLE.
PERHAPS OUR ANCESTORS INTENTIONALLY FILLED IN THE CHAMBERS, WHEN THEY KNEW THIS ERA WAS COMING TO AN END. THE ROMANS COMING TO SCOTLAND MAY HAVE HAD AN INFLUENCE ON THIS.
A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.

Nine Stanes Stone Circle, Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
A journey through Scotland's ancient sites

INTRO
NINE STANES IS ONE OF THE BETTER KNOWN RECUMBENT STONE CIRCLES IN NE SCOTLAND. IT IS SITUATED IN A FORESTRY PLANTATION BETWEEN MULLOCH HILL & GARROL HILL, 8 MILES SE OF BANCHORY. HERE YOU WILL FIND A NEAR COMPLETE SITE WHICH OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS ERECTED IN THE NEOLITHIC ERA.
OVERVIEW
THE 1ST RECORD OF NINE STANES WAS FROM 1692 IN A NOTE BY JAMES GARDEN. ORIGINALLY THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN 11 MEGALITHS WHICH SURROUNDED A RING CAIRN. ONE STONE IS MISSING IN THE NW ARC WHILE ANOTHER ON THE WEST SECTION IS PRESENTLY A STUMP. NINE STANES IS THOUGHT TO BE A LATER MEGALITHIC RING.
RECUMBENT
THE 2.5M LONG X 1.3M HIGH RECUMBENT STONE IS ORIENTATED SSE, MOST RECUMBENTS ARE ON THE SOUTH TO SW ARC. THE RECUMBENT SETTING LOOKS AS IF IT HAS BEEN SKEWED FROM ITS ORIGINAL POSITION TO FIT WITH THE ORIENTATION OF THE INTERNAL CAIRN.
FLANKERS
THE TWO FLANKERS REMAIN, THE WESTERN FLANK IS 2M HIGH. THE FALLEN EAST PILLAR IS JUST OVER 2M.
SCOTTISH ARCHAEOASTRONOMER ALEXANDER THOM, MEASURED NINE STANES IN 1955 & FOUND A TYPE B FLATTENED CIRCLE, WHICH IS QUITE UNUSUAL. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE B FLATTENED RING IN ABERDEENSHIRE IS SOUTH YTHSIE STONE CIRCLE.
VARIOUS
F.R COLES EXCAVATED IN 1904. THE INSIDE AREA WAS VERY STONEY AND PROBABLY AN INTERNAL CAIRN. SIX STONES (ONE WAS MISSING) FORMED A PIT WHICH WAS FUNNEL SHAPED. THIS PIT WAS FULL OF BURNT BONE.
ANOTHER PIT TO THE NORTH, CONTAINED URN FRAGMENTS & CHARCOAL. FOUR SPOTS SURROUNDING THIS PIT CONTAINED BONE.
