Wilsons Falls - Tarraleah - Tasmania
#Wilsonsfalls #TarraleahFalls #Tarraleah
Commonly known as Tarraleah Falls, and signposted in Tarraleah as 'Tarraleah Falls', Wilsons Falls is a significant Tasmanian waterfall in the township of Tarraleah, in central Tasmania. at approximately 40 - 50 metres in height, this single drop waterfall is reached with a short 60 minute return walk on well established tracks through fabulous forest. The track takes you to a viewing platform that is situated on the edge of a cliff, high above the waterfall it faces. From the platform, you get a wonderful view of Wilsons Falls, and of Wilsons Creek as the water flows downstream though the valley.
Wilsons Falls has a large cavernous area directly behind it, evidence of how powerful and substantial this waterfall used to be. However, much of the water supply that once fed Wilson's Creek is diverted for hydro-electric schemes, and the waterfall we have today is a shadow of it's former self.

Tarraleah/Wilsons Falls
This is an easy 40-60 minute return stroll located in Tasmania's central highlands which passes through the bush surrounding Tarraleah. The falls themselves are off the tourist path, and I'd recommend this walk if staying in Tarraleah, or are looking to stretch the legs while driving the Lyell Highway.

How to Choose the Right Camera Setting for a Smooth Waterfall | Landscape Photography in Tasmania
After getting drenched the day before, we headed south to Tarraleah Falls for some midday landscape photography.

After a short walk, we arrived at the lookout. It was a platform suspended out from the side of the gorge. While it provided a great perspective, it didn't give us much flexibility with composition. There was pretty much one location from which to shoot the falls. There were other challenges like the high fencing enclosing the platform that kept getting into the shot and the fact the platform would shake when anyone moved.
When I shoot waterfalls there a general approach, I take to select the right camera settings to achieve a smooth effect. I start with f8 and the base ISO (64). It was the middle of the day, so there was lots of light, so those setting gave me a shutter speed of 1/15 of a second. I typically want a shutter speed of around 1/2 second, so the water is smooth but with a little detail. To achieve that, I needed to cut out some light. The circular polariser that was reducing the glare was also cutting out around 2/3 of a stop, but I needed a little more. I added the 6 stop Neutral Density LEE Filter which brought it down to much, so now the scene was too dark. I corrected this by increasing the ISO to 250 and stopping down the aperture to f6.3. The depth of field was suitable because I was so far away from the subject.

Reynolds Falls - Tasmania Hiking
A hike to Reynolds Falls near Cradle Mountain. Some of the most diverse terrain imaginable all in one walk, from open heathlands to groves of pandanis to stunning rainforest.
And of course, the falls were absolutely incredible too, plunging over 50 metres through a notch in a high cliff. Undoubtably my favourite falls in Tasmania so far.
While the reward for effort was amazing, the hike was extremely hard, with over 1,000 metres of elevation gain over the course of it at a guess, but well worth the effort.

Hobart to Tarraleah, Tasmania 2018
In March 2018 we arrived in Hobart, Tasmania for our family holiday. Our first night was in Tarraleah, which is just under a two hour drive from Hobart. The town was built in the 1930’s by the Hydro Electric Commission to house the workers and we stayed in one of the Art Deco Cottages which are filled with so much character. What a great little place to visit In the Central Highlands and if it was snowing, how magical it would be! The cows are just gorgeous and so friendly, the kids just loved them. Unfortunately we ran out of time and didn’t get to do the bush walk to the waterfall but maybe next time!

Liffey Falls, Tasmania (Cinemataic)
Liffey Falls State Reserve is nestled within cool temperate rain forest on the slopes of the Great Western Tiers. Framed by the dominant species of Tasmania's cool temperate rain forests - myrtle, sassafras and leatherwood, the falls are understandably a popular spot among both Tasmanian's and visitors alike. A nature walk leads from a picnic area near the car park down through forests of towering eucalyptus and tree ferns to the falls. A number of smaller falls are passed along the way.
Tasmania's Waterfalls & Waterways
Tasmania has many great waterfalls and waterways. We explored these on our holiday by cabin and car around Tasmania. Streams, rivers, waterfalls full of clear crisp water and Australia's native animals.
More info on our blog:
We took a trip to Tasmania by Cabin and Car and were blown way by Tasmania’s wilderness, wildlife and of course waterways. We had such a short time there, but planned it really well meaning we used our 12 days to the maximum. Wherever possible we were sure to check out Tasmania’s Waterfalls, Rivers and Creeks.
At the start of our journey we checked out Bull Creek at Lemonthyme Resort near Moira. From there we headed up to Cradle Mountain walking around Dove Lake. One thing to point out, Cradle Mountain National Park was by far the best thing we did on our trip. Don’t miss it!
We visited Strahan and checked out the King River Gorge on the West Coast Wilderness train out of Queenstown. Heading in land we stopped by Lake St Claire just out of Derwent Bridge, moving on to Tarraleah to see the beautiful Tarraleah Falls.
Russell Falls at the Mount Field National Park was a highlight, as was the Horseshoe Falls further up the waterfall. We finished our trip with a visit to the Cataract Gorge, taking a chairlift over the stunning South Esk River watching as the powerful water roared out of the first basin.
There was so much more to see in Tasmania. Our next trip will be with our Caravan in tow, and we plan to spend at least 6 to 8 weeks camping around what can only be described as a beautiful state. Check out the video above to see all that we saw, winding our way around Tasmania’s beautiful waterways.
