Most Beautiful Shrine in Japan|Day 96 - Miyazaki
Tucked away in the mountains of the very beautiful Aya Town in Kyushu’s Miyazaki Prefecture you will find the famous Teruha Suspension Bridge (照葉大吊橋). Meant to be the world’s longest suspension bridge devoted only to pedestrian traffic when it was built in 1984. Aya Town is also famous for it’s castle and craft village, as well as rather good home grown wine. The Teruha bridge is 250m long and 142m tall at it’s highest point above Honjougawa river, and doesn’t rock quite as much as you’d imagine. On the other side of the bridge lies the entrance to a national park aiming to preserve the natural forests of Kyushu, as they looked before the introduction of tree farming after the second world war.
Udo Shrine (鵜戸神宮, Udo Jingū), located on the Nichinan Coast south of Miyazaki City, is dedicated to Yamasachihiko, the father of Emperor Jimmu, the mythical first emperor of Japan. This brightly painted shrine is set in a cave on the side of a cliff overlooking the ocean and so enjoys a spectacular view.
There are a few legends concerning Emperor Jimmu and this cave, although it is unclear whether he was born here or visited here as a baby. However, the one thing the stories have in common are the breast shaped rocks in the cave wall which are said to have nourished him.
Drinking the water that drips from these rocks is thought to be beneficial for pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and women hoping to have a child. The shrine is also thought to be fortunate for couples and newlyweds.
Outside the cave is a terrace overlooking the ocean. Among the rocks below is a target marked by rope into which people try to throw small ceramic undama, or lucky balls (available at the shrine for a small fee). Women throw with their right hand while men throw with their left, and landing an undama in the target brings good luck.

Enoshima Island Tour | A Taste of Japan #7
A Taste of Japan returns with a full Enoshima Island tour! When my sister was visiting us in 2015, we went to Enoshima Island, and explored much of the island. We visited Enoshima Shrine, Enoshima Daishi, Enoshima Sea Candle, and the Iwaya Caves. The shopping area was wonderful, but busy. And the view was incredible. Enoshima is located on the southern part of Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. It's next to the busiest beach in Japan, Enoshima Beach. The island is famous for its dried, flattened octopus, as well as the many cats that live on the island.
