Sheffield - Town of Murals (Tasmania)
Sheffield is a town 23 km inland from Devonport on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia's island state. Sheffield has long been the rural hub for the Mount Roland area. The Sheffield area is well known for its high quality butterfat production via dairy farming. The area is suitable for lamb and beef production. The town of Railton is nearby. At the 2006 census, Sheffield had a population of 1,397.
Town of Murals.
Inspired by the story of Chemainus, a small Canadian town that had through mural art, rescued itself from ruin, the Kentish Association for Tourism (KAT) worked valiantly on the vision to combine the arts and tourism to revive and reinvent the town of Sheffield.
Sheffield has become a major tourist attraction due to it being promoted as a Town of Murals, based upon the instrumental contributions of the Kentish Association for Tourism (currently known as Sheffield Inc) and local tourism pioneer Brian Inder.
The first town mural was painted in Sheffield in December 1986. Since then over 60 murals depicting the area's rich history and beautiful natural scenery are painted on walls scattered throughout the town and buildings along the roadside. The murals attract an estimated 200,000 people to the town annually.
In the heart of Sheffield, there are a number of studios open to the public where visitors can watch the artists as they do their work. There are artists of every discipline, including photography, fine art, glass, woodcraft, pottery, ceramics and specialised crafts.
The International Mural Fest art competition has been held annually since 2003 and returns in April each year. A poem is selected which the artists use as their inspiration. After each competition the 9 finalist murals remain on display at Mural Park for approximately 12 months until the next competition. In 2012, an interactive mural and workshops were added to the artistic activities of the festival for the Mural Fest 10th anniversary celebrations.

Sheffield Tasmania
???? Here's a quick little snippet of our time spent in Sheffield and the surrounding areas. ????
My dad grew up here, so seeing where he lived, where he played his first music gig ???? and even a mural of the police officer who gave him his motorbike license, was just magic ????♂️????
Sheffield, Tasmania's 'Town of Murals' is a must see (the artwork is incredible!) ???? as is Railton, the 'Town of Topiary' with more than 100 topiary characters found along the main street. ???? ????
The stunning views of Mt Roland which towers nearby are an added bonus. ⛰ Curried scallop pies are something you can't miss out on - we came back to Bossimis Bakery in Sheffield a second time just to eat another pie! ???? ???? ????
TASMANIA CAMPBELL TOWN NORTHERN MIDLANDS COUNCIL TOURISM HERITAGE
Campbell Town is a major pastoral and tourist centre in the Northern Midlands, originally established in 1821 by Governor Macquarie as one of the four garrison town and probation stations between Hobart and Launceston.
Campbell Town, and the Elizabeth River, which runs through it (previously known as Relief Creek), was named by Macquarie after his wife, Elizabeth Campbell.
The town, which is situated in an important wool-growing district surrounding the Heritage Highway, is 134 kms from Hobart, and 68 kms from Launceston.
The annual Campbell Town Agricultural Show is the oldest of its kind in Australia, having run continuously since 1838.
Campbell Town district has a population of approx 800 of which the largest proportion would be retirees, Campbell Town over the past 10 years has suffered like other rural towns in Australia that have lost business and services at an alarming rate, the biggest losses being over the past 4 years with the closure of the main industry and employer (Saxon Wood heaters) with the loss of 30 jobs, closure of one supermarket and of a rural merchandise store.
However there is a positive side as well with the opening of new businesses coupled with the passing traffic namely 2 Million cars per year.
We believed then that Campbell Town had enormous potential to be a substantial contributor to the states economy with:
1.Location: on the Main Highway midway from Hobart and Launceston, an ideal spot to stop and rest.
2.Good facilities: Parks, Food etc.
3.Possible major tourist industry, relating to the Heritage of the town.
4.Possible celebration of the Transit of Venus in 2004 (Campbell Town was a site in Tasmania that the transit was viewed in 1882 and many more.
In March 2002, a Working Together Workshop was initiated by the Campbell Town District Forum (a committee of the Northern Midlands Council) to investigate options for making the most of the positive changes that were happening in the area. In addition, the workshop was looking for ways to support activities and developments that would help make Campbell Town a more prosperous and enjoyable place to live and work.
As a result, a number of small projects were successfully undertaken by the Working Together Group.
From July 2003, in order to gain broader community involvement and support for the concept, the Heritage Highway Museum and Working Together Group began to hold joint meetings. It was considered essential that all members of the local community had the opportunity to participate in this newly formed organisation and could contribute to the vision and activities planned and undertaken in the Campbell Town district. Thus About Campbell Town Inc was formed as a new community development association. About Campbell Town Inc Committees include Tourism & Marketing, Environment, Youth, and Museum management and Garden Club. Other committees can be convened as and when required to support local community activities, events and planning.
Now Campbell Town has a vibrant business sector with the passing traffic stopping to break their trip, for a coffee or meal use the clean amenities, top off in the many antique or specialty shops or visit the Museum & Visitor Information centre & take a self guided walk through History or a stroll beside the tranquil Elizabeth River

The Sheffield Story: How Mural Art Saved a Tiny Tasmanian Town
Sheffield Murals:
A classic Aussie tale of triumph in the face of adversity, this is the story of the dramatic change in fate for a tiny, historical town in Tasmania's picturesque north-west when a small but dedicated band of local residents refused to let their town die. Today this quaint region and its quirky, endearing characters attract over 200,000 visitors a year.
Sheffield Inc, the producers of the documentary, appreciate the great interviews with Brian Inder - Founding member of KAT, 1985, Cheyne Purdue - Mural Artist, Julian Bale - Murals Curator and Restorer and Mark Beach-Ross - Vice President of Sheffield Inc.
A big thanks to all the volunteers that made this little docco come to life. Especially, Danielle Rodgers for her efforts in the creative department, getting the story-line just right, and also a special thanks to Aimee Bell for her enthusiasm behind the camera, sound and audio recording, and the wonderful job she did with the editing. And a serious, double thumbs-up to Rick Eaves, for the sparkly bits that made the girls' work shine.

Quest'oggi siamo andati a Sheffield (Tasmania) una pittoresca cittadina sede di molti artisti che si ritrovano periodicamente per dipingere direttamente sui muri come fossero dei quadri. Da quì il soprannome Murals City
