Bun Bo Hue - A Vietnamese Food You Must Eat
You don’t want to miss eating Bun Bo Hue. Read more here ►
Get my food news ►
Among the long list of Vietnamese food is a famous dish known as Bun Bo Hue, and although it may not be as well known throughout the world as pho, I personally, probably like it even better - bun bo Hue is a dish you don’t want to miss eating when you’re in Vietnam (or even at a Vietnamese restaurant). Although bun bo Hue is originally from the city of Hue, located in the central part of Vietnam, you’ll be able to find the dish all over the country, and it’s especially popular throughout Saigon, available as both a street food and at many shophouse style restaurants. Although I haven’t yet been able to taste the bun bo Hue in Hue, when I was in Saigon, I had an amazing time trying it at a restaurant called Bún Bò Huế Chú Há.
Bun bo Hue is a beef based noodle, and at this particular restaurant my bowl of noodles came with a nice handful of spaghetti sized rice noodles at the bottom, topped with a nice hunk of tenderly stewed beef shank (I think that’s what it was), a few slices of beef, some pieces of Vietnamese sausage, and then a scoop of the broth, a rich concentration of beef stock mixed with spices, herbs, and seasoning. Finally, to top things off, my bowl of Vietnamese noodles was finished with a handful of freshly chopped green onions and thinly sliced white onions. Along with a delicious bowl of noodles, one of the coolest features of eating at Bún Bò Huế Chú Há was the clear bowl that the noodles were served in. I have to say that in all my years of eating noodles in Asia, I think this was my first meal served in a clear see-through bowl. It was nice to be able to see all the floating goodies below.
After taking about 10 minutes worth of photos before eating or making this food video, my bowl of noodles was cold. So the kind owner of the restaurant grabbed my bowl, threw out the soup, then re-filled it back up with hot soup, and also added in an extra handful of onions on top. The service and hospitality at this bun bo Hue restaurant, and also for many restaurants I ate at while in Saigon, was extremely kind and generous. Just like nearly all Vietnamese food, one of the best things about eating is all the side vegetables and garnishes, which in this case included a nice plate of lightly blanched bean sprouts, morning glory, and banana flower blossom. Along with the partly cooked vegetables, there was also a nice basket of both sweet basil and sawtooth herb, both of which contributed a nice fresh herb flavor to the noodles. And let’s not forget about those wonderful sliced Vietnamese peppers, not only are they pretty spicy, but they have a nice flavor to them as well.
Ok, so after topping my bowl with all the garnishes, I was ready to dig in. The bun bo Hue was extremely delicious. The noodles were soft, yet slurpy and the broth of the soup was citrusy, lightly spicy (and more so with the extra chilies), and just had a wonderful undertone of long boiled beef stock flavor to it. The pieces of meat included in my bowl were also all delicious, from the sour piece of sausage, to the hunk of beef that literally slid off the bone as I picked it up.
Again, unfortunately I wasn’t able to visit Hue on this trip, but I did have a wonderful time exploring the Vietnamese food available in Saigon, bun bo Hue being widely present and a local favorite not only in Hue, but also in Saigon.
If you’re interested in going to the restaurant I went to, the food is good, the service is wonderful, and it’s located in a nice convenient location pretty close to central Saigon, here are the details:
Bún Bò Huế Chú Há
Address: 300 Võ Văn Tần, Phường 5, District 3
Open hours: 6 am - 10 pm daily
Prices: 60,000 Vietnamese Dong, expensive but good sized portion and lots of meat

Ting Ting and I (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), made our way to Vietnam solely to eat street food. Since we love street food around the world, we decided that Vietnam was the perfect holiday destination for street food to try, because it's supposed to be the best and we love watching new street food recipes and street food flavors as we adventure down deep, back alleyways, getting lost into new street food worlds. So far, in our Vietnamese street food tour series, we've eaten street food in Hanoi, and then we took the sleeper train south 12 hours to Hue. Hue is the old ancient capital of Vietnam, and is packed full of different street food to try. We spent 4 days here eating and couldn't get enough of all the street food. Asian street food is the best, and in Vietnam, it doesn't get any better!
We found 11 different Vietnamese street foods in this video. If you arrive here looking to eat, you can follow along with these addresses:
1) Bun Bo hue @02:44- The specialty street food Beef and pork broth noodle soup of Hue, Vietnam - It’s absolutely rich and delicious! Found at the Dong Ba market early morning around 730am. Go to the outside of the street market and find the old ladies with big pots of good street food and you’ll discover a ton!
2) Bun Hen @ 06:10 Spicy Clam noodle soup - Also found at the Dong Ba Market in Hue, Vietnam, in the early morning! Just look around the outside of the market, the perimeter, not on the inside.
3) Banh Tam Banana Leaf @ 09:44 wrapped around marinated shrimp - Found directly beside the Bun Hen at Dong Ba market
4) Veg Soup @ 11:27 - Also found at Dong Ba Street Food Market in Hue, Vietnam
5) Bun Tith Nuong @ 14:37 Grilled pork over top of rice noodles. These was my favorite meal from Hue, and so cheap at 10,000 Vietnamese dong! Bun Thit Nuong 66 Bạch Đằng
6) Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich @ 17:55- This one was quite average. But still fun to eat! This one was at the intersection of Xuan 68 and Le Thanh Ton street inside Hue’s old city.
7) Douhua Silken Tofu @ 21:27 - This was a street food vendor carrying the food on wooden poles, so you have to be lucky at the right place at the right time. We were at the location below around 4:30 PM and she came along.
8) Banh Tran Truong “Vietnamese Pizza made from rice paper” @ 22:54. You can find this one inside the old city on 14 Le Thanh Ton Street in Hue, Vietnam
9) Banh Ep - Flattened rice paper dough with raw egg grilled @ 22:54 - Same location as the Vietnamese rice paper pizza
10) Nem Lui Vietnamese Pork Skewers @ 25:56 - These were found at 241 Huynh Thuc Khang - TP, Hue, Vietnam
11) Banh Xeo Vietnamese pancakes @ 25:56 - Same location as above, 241 Hyun Thuc Khang - TP. Hue, Vietnam

How to Make BUN BO HUE Vietnamese Soup (Move Over Pho!) | CHOW-TO
For the recipe:
In our inaugural episode of CHOW-TO, we learn how to make Bun Bo Hue with Chef Jimmy Ly of Madame Vo in New York City. Bun Bo Hue is a traditional Vietnamese soup originating in the city of Hue in Central Vietnam — Bun translates to noodles, and Bo to beef. It's a dish famous for its balance of acidity, spice, and umami flavors. This particular iteration is inspired by Southern Vietnam, and is spicy and rich in flavor. Watch and learn!
CHOW-TO is an instructional series hosted by Senior Video Producer Guillermo Riveros dedicated to breaking down the process for creating the most delicious foods. Follow along for valuable insight and guidance from the world's finest chefs.

HUE TO HOI AN - Most Epic Way to Travel Vietnam!

OK travel bugs, this was INSANE. I honestly thought we were going by motorbike and was ready for the occasion. Turns out they had the jeep available that day and we drove it along the Vietnam coastline. BREATHTAKING! This was definitely one of those “wow, I can’t believe I did that” travel moments.
While you can take a shuttle bus or the train, both those options don’t allow you to see Vietnam’s amazing coastline views. Consider taking a private motorbike, jeep, or car option to get the most out of your time!
Here’s some destinations we visited during the drive from Hue to Hoi An:
-Fishing village
-Hai Van Pass is a long mountainous stretch of road in Central Vietnam that juts into the sea. An incredibly beautiful path to ride on on motorbike or…jeep!
-My Khe Beach, R & R Beach is a beach in Danang, a white sandy 20-mile stretch!
-Marble Mountain is a cluster of limestone hills, caves, tunnels, and temples. A seriously fascinating site to visit in Vietnam!
-Danang is the largest city in Vietnam in terms of population - wow!
-Hoi An Ancient City
I flew into Hue instead of Danang because it was cheaper, so I had to travel down South to get to Hoi An :) Hope that helps with navigation!
If you've made it this far...give the video a big thumbs up! You're epicly awesome.

Vietnamese Food BUN BO HUE IN HUE Vietnam 2016
One of my favorite bowl of soup to eat is Bun Bo Hue! And today I get to eat it in Hue, Vietnam where it was born.
Bún bò originated in Hue, a former capital of Vietnam. Outside the city of Hue and some parts of Central Vietnam, it is called bún bò Huế to denote its origin. Within Huế and surrounding cities, it is known simply as bún bò. The broth is prepared by simmering beef bones and beef shank with lemongrass and then seasoned with fermented shrimp sauce and sugar for taste. Very spicy chili oil is added later during the cooking process.
Bún bò usually includes thin slices of marinated and boiled beef shank, chunks of oxtail, and pig's knuckles. It can also include cubes of congealed pig blood, which has a color between dark brown and maroon, and a texture resembling firm tofu.
Bún bò is commonly served with lime wedges, cilantro sprigs, diced green onions, raw sliced onions, chili sauce, thinly sliced banana blossom, red cabbage, mint, basil, perilla, persicaria odorata or Vietnamese coriander (rau ram), saw tooth herb and sometimes mung bean sprouts. Thinly sliced purple cabbage is acceptable substitute when banana blossoms are not available. Purple cabbage most resembles banana blossom in texture, though not in taste. Fish sauce and shrimp sauce is added to the soup according to taste.

New Jollibee Store Hue, Vietnam 2018 - We Try it Out!
While looking for some aircon to hide under after walking the streets of Hue, Vietnam, we found a Vincom shopping all that had a brand new Jollibee restaurant in it, that had only been open for a few weeks!
Naturally we had to check it out and try some of the dishes others had suggested we eat, so we thought we'd film it and share with you all :)
My favourite of the night was definitely the Saigon Chilli Chicken, although it was spicy enough to make my eyes water, I loved the taste!
Jollibee did it once again serving great food at an awesome price and now we will be looking for one in every place we visit while we travel Vietnam in 2018.
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam. But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..

We returned to the abandoned water park outside of Hue, Vietnam the next day to do some more exploring. There used to be an aquarium and waterpark with slides.... little did we know there's still hardware from the slides sticking out of the ground randomly! This one was painful as Amanda found a bolt with her big toe.
