Want to know all of the details about visas, booking your tickets, etc.? We created the Ultimate Guide to Riding the Trans-Siberian Railway! Read it here
OMG we are in RUSSIA! Country #62. We went to the Izmailovsky Market (Izmalovskiy rynok) in Moscow. There's tons of Soviet antiques along with atrisan Russian goodies! For dinner we had our first Russian food which was what Nate referred to as Russian Empanadas. A local recommended them to us and they were delicious! They weren't easy to order, but totally worth the effort!

Battle of the BBQs: American steak vs. Russian shashlik - Taste of Russia Ep.10
More films about food and cooking:
Glen tells Oscar he has some new friends who are insisting that he visit their dacha. Glen doesn’t really understand what a dacha is and asks Oscar what all the fuss is about. Oscar patiently explains it’s a country house where people go to relax. Many Russians grow vegetables and gather berries at their dachas in the summer to preserve for winter. To show Glen what he means, the friends check out a real Russian root cellar packed with jars of jam, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
Russians also love nothing more at their dachas than a barbecue. Glen is curious about how Russian and American barbecue differs, so Oscar challenges him to a cook off to see which is better. Oscar will make lamb kebabs, or shashlik, while Glen grills a thick steak. Finding a decent American-style steak in Moscow isn’t easy, but Glen finds a specialty shop with nice marbled ribeyes. To improve his chances, he even asks his old friend, Chef Farbrice Lecoin from the first episode, for tips on how to cook it.
Finally, the battle is on. While Glen throws his steaks on the grill and relaxes in a lawn chair, Oscar works up a sweat. To assure victory, Oscar has decided to make tandoori chicken as well as the shashlik, and his relative Sasha brings a tandoor to make it in. Though this freestanding clay oven is usually associated with India, it’s also used in Russia’s Caucuses, so it’s not really cheating.
When the smoke clears, Oscar and Glen compare their culinary masterpieces and uncover a big cultural difference: Russians and Americans have very different ideas about how when the meat is ready.
The contest winner is revealed in Taste of Russia, Episode 10.

Russian ‘Olivier’? Why Russia’s most popular salad has a French name - Taste of Russia Ep.1
More films about food and cooking:
American foodie Glen has a dream. He wants to open an authentic Russian restaurant in Miami, Florida, his home town. The problem is he knows nothing about Russian cuisine, so he asks his friend Oscar to help unlock its secrets. The popular Russian actor and food writer takes up the challenge and the pair sets off on a culinary journey across Russia.
First stop is the heart of the nation, Moscow. Here, Oscar and Glen explore the origins of Russia’s most popular salad, Olivier, and find out how it got its French name.
With the help of Farbrice Lecoin, one of the best French chefs in the Russian capital, the two friends unravel this paradox and hear the story behind the creation of mayonnaise – one of the dish’s key ingredients.
Fabrice makes Olivier according to its original recipe, while Oscar and Glen prepare the version popular in the Soviet era, which any Russian can make. Then they compare the two to see how the popular dish has changed over time.

Making ‘borsch’ fit for a tsar & Cossack fighting 101 - Taste of Russia Ep.9
Glen wants to learn to make one of Russia’s most iconic dishes, beetroot soup, aka borsch. Oscar will settle for nothing less than the most authentic version, so the pair travels to Pereslavl-Zalessky, a medieval town that still boasts impressive 12th and 14th century monasteries. There, the culinary explorers will learn to make tsar borsch, a recipe developed in the early 19th century by Emperor Alexander I’s personal chef.
It certainly isn’t fast food! The stock takes at least six hours to make and contains at least four kinds of meat: beef, pork, chicken, and duck. Under an experienced chef’s watchful eye, Oscar and Glen chop and shred onions, cabbage, potatoes, and beets. Then, they add the vegetables to the stock to simmer in a cast iron pot in a wood-fired Russian stove.
While awaiting the final result, Glen and Oscar meet the local Cossacks for fun and games in a unique Russian park that was recently created to preserve and showcase Russian traditions. There are houses that replicate 19th century architecture, as well as arts and crafts, and games and entertainment. After working up an appetite, Oscar and Glen return to the kitchen to find a stupendous variety of complementary dishes already prepared. The borsch is finally ready, and the tired warriors sit down to a meal fit for a royal coronation.

Healthy living in Russia’s sports capital - Taste of Russia Ep. 29
Glen and Oscar continue to explore Russia’s sports capital, Sochi. After the previous episode’s eating marathon, the ‘gastronauts’ are determined to engage in some healthy activities. They begin with skiing and snowboarding at one of the area’s premier ski resorts, which was specially built for the 2014 Winter Olympics. However, when Oscar gets to the bottom of the mountain, he can’t find Glen anywhere and begins to suspect that his friend isn’t as proficient at snowboarding as he claimed.
Afterwards, Glen checks out the world’s longest suspended walkway, from which you can take the world highest unguarded bungee jump. The bridge offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains with the Black Sea in the distance and a dizzying look straight down into a 207-metre deep gorge.
Later, the pair head to the Olympic Park to see the Sochi Autodrome, where a professional driver literally takes Oscar and Glen for a spin.
After all the excitement, Oscar offers to make Glen a healthy dinner. With the help of a local chef, he makes his friend a vitamin-packed meal featuring two local specialities: the Sochi Salad and Olympic Champion Smoothie.

Suffering for soup: The secret of authentic ‘ukha’ - Taste of Russia Ep.3
More films about food and cooking:
Glen learns all about one of Russia’s most ancient dishes, a fish soup called ukha, a popular delicacy dating back to the 16th-17th centuries that can still be found in many Russian restaurants.
To make ukha fit for a tsar, it’s essential to use freshly caught sterlet. The problem is it’s winter, so Oscar takes Glen ice fishing. After catching a magnificent fish, the pair takes refuge from the freezing cold in the warmth of a welcoming home. It happens to belong to Oscar’s relative Sasha, who promises to reveal the key to making authentic ukha.
First, they prepare the broth in a cauldron over a fire. While it’s simmering, Oscar takes Glen for his first taste of a real Russian sauna, or banya. This involves getting whacked with birch branches in a steam room and plunging into an ice-cold pool. After that ordeal, Glen begins to feel a little like a cooked fish himself as he lounges outside in a cauldron-like bath heated on an open fire.
Returning relaxed and refreshed, the final touches are put to the soup, which include a couple of rather surprising ingredients. Will the joy of the taste justify the pain of the cold and the three hours of preparation?

Mosques, Cathedrals & Tatar cuisine: Perfect together in spectacular Kazan - Taste of Russia Ep. 26
Oscar and Glen are in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, where East and West are intertwined. They begin by visiting the multicultural city’s old fortress, or kremlin, which is home to both a spectacular mosque and an ancient Orthodox cathedral.
Watch more films about Food & Cooking:
They also hear a legend involving one of the city’s most famous landmarks, Soyembika Tower – a tragic story of unrequited love between Ivan the Terrible and a Tatar princess.
Then, Oscar leaves Glen with an experienced chef to make Gubadia, a sweet curd pie; a favourite Tatar dish at large celebrations like weddings. Enjoying the results of Glen’s labour over tea, Oscar suggests they check out some more sights. They visit Kazan’s Peter and Paul Cathedral, an 18th-century baroque style church that has seen the likes of Catherine the Great, Alexandre Dumas, and Alexandr Pushkin within its walls. They also check out the city’s awe-inspiring Palace of Agriculture, which boasts a 48-metre-tall tree sculpture in its entrance.
After all the sightseeing, the ‘gastronauts’ have worked up an appetite. They finish the day by making Azu, a hearty meat and potato dish with a Tatar twist.

Patriot: Playing soldier and making appetisers for ‘real men’ - Taste of Russia Ep.15
More films about food and cooking:
Oscar and Glen are at Russia’s Patriot Park. The huge military theme park outside Moscow is a perfect place for a picnic in the rain, where the gastronomic adventurers compare Russian and American field rations, or MREs.
Then they take in some of the park’s many exhibitions featuring Russian and Soviet military hardware. They start out by trying their hands at shooting WWII-era rifles, and even have a chance to pop some rounds from a real Soviet submachine gun. Then it’s time for boys to be boys, and Oscar and Glen engage in a fierce laser-tag battle with real semi-automatic rifles.
After taking a timeout to make ‘guerrilla bread’, they learn about the Red Army’s legendary ‘polutork’, a truck based on Ford’s model AA. They also compare military motorcycles, including Harley Davidson’s WLA-Liberator and the Soviet Union’s art-deco PMZ-A-750. Of course, they also take some time to check out the tanks.
Having worked up a hearty appetite, Oscar takes Glen and their freshly baked loaves of bread to an idyllic spot on the complex, a ‘guerrilla village’, where he shows him how to make appetisers fit for a real soldier.

Survival skills… Russian style - Taste of Russia Ep. 19
More films about food and cooking:
Oscar shows Glen how to feed yourself in a Russian forest with the help of his friend, survival expert Dima. After pitching a tent, they make firewood without an axe, start a fire without matches, and purify water without tablets. Of course, battling with the elements works up an appetite. Luckily, the pair comes across one of Russia’s favourite dishes: mushrooms.
In fact, the nation is a bit fanatic when it comes to mushrooms. Entire families often take to the forests in the summer after a fresh rain in search of the edible fungi. Nearly any Russian can tell you which ones you can eat, which are poisonous, which to fry, and which ones are better preserved. The biggest prize of all is the white mushroom, which makes fantastic soup.
Back at the camp, they add their treasure to some simmering onions and carrots to the pot over an open fire. While they are waiting, Dima shows Glen the secret to making the perfect outdoor baked potato.
As night falls, the three adventurers sit down to a hearty savoury meal around the campfire… but Glen’s still a little nervous that one of their mushrooms may possess psychedelic properties.
