Naples, Italy | Our trip to Capri and the Amalfi Coast ends here
Pictures of our stay in Naples, Italy at the end of our trip to Capri island & the Amalfi Coast in July 2019.
Naples is the regional capital of Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan. In 2017, around 967,069 people lived within the city's administrative limits while its province-level municipality has a population of 3,115,320 residents. Its continuously built-up metropolitan area (that stretches beyond the boundaries of the Metropolitan City of Naples) is the second or third largest metropolitan area in Italy and one of the most densely populated cities in Europe.
First settled by Greeks in the second millennium BC, Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. The city was an important part of Magna Graecia, played a major role in the merging of Greek and Roman society and a significant cultural centre under the Romans. It served as the capital of the Duchy of Naples (661–1139), then of the Kingdom of Naples (1282–1816) and finally of the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy in 1861. Naples is also considered a capital of the Baroque since the arrival of Caravaggio in the 17th century, and due to the artistic revolution his arrival occasioned.
Naples' historic city centre is the largest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a wide range of culturally and historically significant sites nearby, including the Palace of Caserta and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Naples is also known for its natural beauties such as Posillipo, Phlegraean Fields, Nisida, and Vesuvius.
Naples is Italy's fourth-largest economy after Milan, Rome and Turin, and is the world's 103rd-largest urban economy by purchasing power. Naples is a major cargo terminal, and the port of Naples is one of the Mediterranean's largest and busiest.

Tauck Bus Tour Northern Italy with Karen Kelley
Preferred Travel of Naples
Contact us at 239.261.1177
Hello, my name is Karen Kelley. I’m a senior leisure travel consultant here at Preferred Travel. I’ve been in the industry for over 40 years, but believe it or not I have never been to Northern Italy with the exception of Venice. So, I recently had the opportunity to do that with Tauck World Discovery.
I had traveled with Tauck before but never on a bus trip. I’ve been on riverboats with them and I’ve been to Africa with them but never on a European bus adventure and I was very pleasantly surprised. There were people of all ages on there. There were several people, couples traveling together. The trip took the worry out of everything. I felt like I had plenty of time to explore and our guide was so wonderful. I learned an awful lot.
We started the trip in Milan and ended in Venice. I had never been to Milan before and I was very pleasantly surprised. I imagined it was an industrial city devoted to cars and fashion, which is true but we were in the old part of the city walking distance to La Duomo and La Scala. We had the privilege of visiting The Last Supper, something I had always sent clients to but wasn’t able to do myself.
We went to Bellagio, which is my preferred area of the Lake Como district. It has cobble stone streets, beautiful restaurants, beautiful galleries and shops. It is a section of the Lake Como district that actually separates the lake so you have the most beautiful views from there and it was just wonderful. From there we went to Lake Maggiore and spent the nights in Stresa, which was a small town. Very lovely.
Our hotel was so wonderful. Ernest Hemmingway had stayed there during the war recuperating and he had actually written part of A Farewell to Arms there. The hotel has not changed except to be kept up. You are walking into a completely different, old world atmosphere. Absolutely Fabulous!
One of the surprising highlights for me was actually vising the Ferrari factory. I am not a car buff and if I was planning the trip for myself I would have never included that but we went there and that is actually where his father’s factory had been. It is where everything took place. Very Interesting and happily for me they were having a special exhibit with all of the old Ferraris that were used in all the old movies or used by old movie stars. It was a very interesting exhibit and the film they showed on his life was absolutely fascinating.
Our last stop on the trip was Venice. I’ve been to Venice before and I absolutely loved it because it is one place you can count on. It never changes; everything is the same. Even though I had been there before, there are a few places I had never been like the Doge’s Palace. I never wanted to stand in line that long. With Tauck, we had the opportunity if we wanted to visit the Doge’s Palace in the evening. There were only probably 15 of us in the entire palace. It was so beautiful at night. It was an experience I’ll always remember. I remember walking back by myself to meet my friend for dinner. I swear, I was the only person on St. Mark’s Square and it was all lit up. It was absolutely beautiful.
Well, Northern Italy is known for it’s cuisine and I was absolutely not disappointed. From the pizza in Milan to the very end of the trip in Venice, the food was fabulous. Bologna is very famous for it’s food. We get Bolognese sauce from there. We went to a very special restaurant called the 12 Apostles. It is not named after what you would think it would be named after. But apparently years ago, there were 12 craftsmen who used to hang out in that part of town at an old café and just world events, I guess, back then. So, later on a family bought it and named it after these 12 men. So, they were the 12 Apostles. It’s a very special restaurant. You are greeted by a family member when you knock on the door and you are invited in. They have a wine collection that is unbelievable. When they were doing remodeling, downstairs where they have the wine cellar they found all of these ancient Roman ruins. So now you tour the wine cellars among the ruins. It’s a fantastic experience.

Gladiator Museum, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Caserta, Campania, Italy, Europe
The Museo dei Gladiatori stands near the Campano Amphitheater in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. In the museum, the surviving elements of the decoration of the Campanian Amphitheater were presented to the public for the first time. It was inaugurated in 2003 and is divided into three rooms. In the first room, placed at the entrance, various inscriptions have been placed bearing dedications to the emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, a model that reproduces the original structure of the Amphitheater and, at the top right, there are three of the arch keys that decorated the exterior of the monument: a male head with a Phrygian cap identified with Mitra or Attis, a female with a diadem (perhaps Giunone), a head of Minerva with an attic helmet and the cast of the Volturno, whose original is kept in the Museo Campano of Capua. In the second room, with an original layout that reproposes the steps of the auditorium, the decoration of one of the vomitoria (accesses to the cavea) was reconstructed in its entirety; on the bottom there is a relief with a procession of magistrates and lictors, depicted in the act of entering the amphitheater to occupy their seats. The side balustrades instead reproduce felines that bite the prey; other fragments of lateral balustrades depict animals that seem to run towards the arena: gazelles, bears, elephants, lions. Fragments of the frontal plutei are also placed on the walls of the same room. Among the represented themes stand out sacrifice scenes, a depiction of the amphitheater under construction and mythological scenes; in particular we note, on the right wall, the exploits of Hercules (cleaning the Augean, Hercules and Antaeus stables) and two fragments with the Dioscuri. To the right of the entrance is the punishment of Prometheus, the torture of Marsyas, Mars and Rhea Silvia, as well as a fragment with dancing Maenads and another with Apollo. To the left of the entrance one can also recognize a scene with towered deities, the construction of the amphitheater, the representation of a sacred enclosure, a scene of sacrifice for the dedication of the amphitheater. On the left wall, scenes of Centauromachy and Actaeon torn apart by dogs. The stylistic features of the reliefs, the choice of subjects and the way of treating them in response to a strongly classical taste indicate the Hadrian age as a period of execution of the sculptures. In the third room, to the left of the first, there is a mechanical representation of a gladiatorial fight.
Martucci Francesco is One of the Biggest Name's Currently in the Italy
Martucci Francesco is One of the Biggest Name's Currently in the Italy
hailing From Caserta, Italia. He has developed an almost cult following among young amazing pizzaiolo's around Campania
Born in 1979, he has been baked since he was ten years old. A job that happened by family tradition that became his destiny and a way, for him, to redeem his city raped by clichés and stereotypes and a region with a fantastic microclimate and exceptional products. Our weapon is our work, a work that he declines bringing the passion for the products of the earth on pizza. Difficult, impossible, find an unbalanced pizza in his menu. Perfect examples - and highly recommended - are the Pink pizza (fior di latte, scapece zucchini, pink salami, Gorgonzola) where Gorgonzola has been chosen visiting dairy factory in search of the perfect one for the wedding with pink salami a a very unknown salami, of great value, which I thought was right to make the best of it . Or the Velvet Hands (broccoli cream with ricotta water, buffalo mozzarella, sausage with the tip of a black pig's knife from Caserta, aged pecorino cheese aged 16 months), an author's sausage and friarielli born on the wave of the suggestion of its origins Pugliese, which threatens to make fall in love even the irreducible of the most classic tastes.
From absolute sapidity and perfect leavening, finding a defect in the dough and its cooking is practically impossible. Wanting to taste it regardless of the ingredients chosen for the seasoning, its pizza is sincere as one would say of some wines: pure, it does not hide behind faux aestheticism, but it is beautiful - and above all good - for what it is. With all the stains on the cornice (known for pignoli: it is never too burnt) is true as the hinterland of Campania where it is located, between the palace vanvitelliana and the endless countryside of friarielli, artichokes and precious tomatoes. The classic condiments are, from this point of view, perhaps the ones to start with, which are essential. The Sicilian (San Marzano PDO tomato, fior di latte, aubergine with mushrooms), with the right number of aubergines and a tomato chosen to marry perfectly with these vegetables is in good company with an exceptionortal and a daisy from top five.
The most interesting page of his menu is the last one where he joins the small companies to an oil paper still quite new in the world of Neapolitan pizza. From the monocultivar Koiné Tonda del Matese Slow food presidium to the ancient Muraglia monocultivar Coratina di Andria mill, passing through a good variety of oils originating in the province of Salerno, is represented a good part of the oil Italy thanks to a path that unites the study of taste to attention to nutritional values of individual products.
The future is constantly evolving and a new project appears on the horizon. A pizzeria under construction that will rise next to the restaurant Le Colonne by starred chef Rosanna Marziale and will open at the end of the summer with three ovens, many more covered, but above all a 240 sqm kitchen completely dedicated to my experiments. We will have blast chillers, freeze dryers, smokers and low temperature cooking machines . A potential war machine comparable to that of a large restaurant, suitable for the crazy head that says and proves to have, and avant-garde, in its being totally zero environmental impact. Because the future also passes from pizza, especially if done with sincerity.
