Tate Modern London - Things to Do in London

Are you visiting London soon and thinking about the interesting places that you could check and go to? Let us help you with some ideas related to those places and destinations which we have been to. One of these destinations in London is Tate Modern, which is all about art.

The main goal behind Tate Modern in London is giving the world the chance to fully understand the British art from the 16th century and at the same time help them know more about the international modern and contemporary art.

Tate is an old place that is opening its doors to the public since a very long period of time but lots of tourists forget about visiting the place, especially if they are not great lovers of art, but who out there does not appreciate art and its existence? The story of Tate started back in 1897 when it first opened its doors to the public, but at that time it only had one site that displayed a small collection of British art.

Through the passage of time, this small site expanded to four different major sites along with the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 70,000 artworks.

Some people are asking about the name Tate given to this art museum and from where did it come. Henry Tate is the reason behind this name and he was an industrialist who had made his fortune as a sugar refiner and who offered his British nineteenth century collection to the nation and provided the first funding to the Tate, which is the main reason why it has taken his name. The collection and history of Tate kept going further with some help and funding offered by other important characters back in history, such as the Duveen Family.

Tate Modern is the place we have been walking through in this video and which is part of the places that visitors should visit in London, it opens its gates from Sunday to Thursday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and from Friday to Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM. According to the day you are visiting, there will be different exhibitions displayed there during special days of the year.

There are different types of art found in Tate Modern which will definitely attract the visitors to them, it might be the kind of art that combines architecture in the equation, as well as other things which the artists managed to use different objects which are considered not ordinary.

From the free collection displays in Tate Modern, there is the material and objects, the start display, the living cities, the performer and participant, and the between the object and architecture; every single one of these carries its own message through the different artwork that is displayed inside.

We enjoyed moving across this art place and loved checking and studying every single artwork that is found inside there and that is the reason why we definitely recommend that people visiting London go and check it all out - you will definitely leave the place loving art more than you might already do.

There are different places that one could visit in London in general and these include palaces, museums, parks and other touristic attractions that might be giving the city much of its popularity. When it comes to art then we should mention Albert Memorial which was done as a memory of Prince Albert and which is located in the Kensington Gardens ( and visiting the National Theatre and attending something at it (

There are lots of places to be visited in London that include Big Ben, the famous old clock that is now undergoing some restorations ( there are different palaces in the city which every single one of them carries its story, such as Buckingham Palace ( and Kensington Palace ( there is also London Eye which provides the visitors with the views over the city ( and there is also the different famous parks that make London a lot different (

There are lots of different things and places to be done and visited in London and which will attract different types of people to them, they will depend on the likes and dislikes of everyone visiting London and what he/she will be interested to see and do in the city of fog.

Tate Modern - London (England)

Tate Modern in London is a British museum of modern art and together with Tate Britain (formerly Tate Gallery, renamed in 2000), Tate Liverpool, Tate St. Ives and Tate Online, of the group currently known simply like Tate.

The museum was housed in the former power station of Bankside, in the district of Southwark, on the banks of the Thames. The mill, designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built in two phases between 1947 and 1963, was shut down in 1981 and the building was reconverted by the Swiss architects Herzog and Meuron.

Tate Modern is now UK’s top tourist attraction

The Tate Modern has overtaken the British Museum for the first time in a decade. The art gallery was visited by almost 5.9 million people last year.

Visitor numbers to the Tate Modern increased by 3.4 percent, while visits to the British Museum fell by 1.3 percent to just over 5.8 million.

The UK’s top 10 most-visited attractions are all in London and include National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Southbank Centre, V&A Kensington, Science Museum, Somerset House, Tower of London, and Royal Museums Greenwich.

Finally, the last day in London! Before leaving London, my hubby and I visited the two must-see places of mine - Tate Modern & London Bridge. Especially when we visited Tate Modern, we were so lucky to see the Picasso exhibition #Picasso1932 + an exhibition called ‘Shape of Light’.

After taking some photos in front of London Bridge, we went out of London and watched Seven Sisters Cliffs and Brighton Palace Pier. The weather was cloudy all day, but we enjoyed the different atmosphere from the city.

A review of Tate Britain's superb show All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life.

Opening on 28 February, this landmark exhibition at Tate Britain celebrates how artists have captured the intense experience of life in paint. All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life showcases around 100 works by some of the most celebrated modern British artists, with Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon at its heart. It reveals how their art captures personal and immediate experiences and events, distilling raw sensations through their use of paint, as Freud said: ‘I want the paint to work as flesh does’. Bringing together major works by Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, R.B. Kitaj, Leon Kossoff, Paula Rego, Jenny Saville, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and many others, this exhibition makes poignant connections across generations of artists and tells an expanded story of figurative painting in the 20th century.

Groups of major and rarely seen works by Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon give visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the rich sensuality and intimacy of these two modern masters. Key paintings spanning Freud’s career explores his studio as both context and subject of his work and show how his unflinchingly honest depictions of models became more sculptural and visceral over time, in works such as Frank Auerbach 1975-6 and Sleeping by the Lion Carpet 1996. In contrast to Freud’s practice of working from life, the exhibition looks at Bacon’s relationship with photographer John Deakin, whose portraits of friends and lovers were often the starting point for Bacon’s work, including Portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne 1966. Earlier works by Bacon like Study after Velazquez 1950 are shown alongside a sculpture by Giacometti, both artists having explored the enduring presence of isolated figures.

Looking to earlier generations, the exhibition shows how this spirit in painting had been pursued by artists like Walter Sickert and Chaïm Soutine – key precedents for portraying an intimate, subjective and tangible reality. The teaching of William Coldstream at the Slade School of Fine Art and David Bomberg at the Borough Polytechnic also proved hugely influential. Employing Freud as a fellow tutor, Coldstream encouraged the likes of Michael Andrews and Euan Uglow to fix the visible world on canvas through intense observation, while Bomberg’s vision led students like Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and Dorothy Mead to pursue a more tactile, embodied experience of life. This generation’s work encompassed a wide variety of subjects, from Auerbach’s and Kossoff’s enduring fascination with London’s streets and public spaces to F.N. Souza’s spiritual and symbolic figures, and from Coldstream’s and Freud’s focus on the body in isolation to Michael Andrews’s and R.B. Kitaj’s interest in group scenes and storytelling.

The exhibition also sheds light on the role of women artists in the traditionally male-dominated field of figurative painting. Paula Rego explores the condition of women in society and the roles they play over the course of their lives, while always referring to autobiographical events, as in The Family 1988. Her work underwent a particularly profound change in the late 1980s and 1990s when she returned to working from life. The exhibition also celebrates a younger generation of painters who continue to pursue the tangible reality of life in their work. Contemporary artists like Cecily Brown, Celia Paul, Jenny Saville and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye work in dialogue with this tradition while also taking the painting of figures in new directions.

All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life is curated at Tate Britain by Elena Crippa, Curator, Modern and Contemporary British Art, and Laura Castagnini, Assistant Curator. It will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue and a programme of talks and events in the gallery. The exhibitions will tour to the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest later in 2018.

This video is made using some of the photos visitors of the Tate Modern have posted on instagram in the last month (hashtag #tatemodern).
It is the museum through their eyes. What they decide to capture and what catches more their attention. How is their experience depicted in their photographs?
Most of the pictures shared on social media show some of the art shown at the Tate Modern. A lot of them include a visitor gazing at the art. Most of them show the person from the back. It feels that if the art is not being seen by someone is less its worth. It is quite interesting how the presence of a human being in front of a painting or an installation makes someone more willing to take a picture of it. It gives the impression that the purpose of the art is being fulfilled at that very moment.
What is more, a great number of pictures are taken at the café of the museum showing the coffee in front of the great view.
The architecture of the museum also, is an element captured not only the inside of it, but the outside as well.
What should be said for sure is that the vast number of the pictures taken at the Tate Modern give the impression that people try to be more artistic and innovative while taking them. The place surely inspires them and challenges them to take pictures in a more artistic way, than they would normally do.

Tate Modern

'Tate Modern is a modern art gallery located in London. It is Britain's national gallery of international modern art and forms part of the Tate group (together with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Online). It is based in the former Bankside Power Station, in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark. Tate holds the national collection of British art from 1900 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art. Tate Modern is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. As with the UK's other national galleries and museums, there is no admission charge for access to the collection displays, which take up the majority of the gallery space, while tickets must be purchased for the major temporary exhibitions.

Tate Modern is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, which was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Battersea Power Station, and built in two stages between 1947 and 1963. It is directly across the river from St Paul's Cathedral. The power station closed in 1981.

Prior to redevelopment, the power station was a 200 m (660 ft) long, steel framed, brick clad building with a substantial central chimney standing 99 m (325 ft). The structure was roughly divided into three main areas each running east-west - the huge main turbine hall in the centre, with the boiler house to the north and the switch house to the south.

For many years after closure Bankside Power station was at risk of being demolished by developers. Many people campaigned for the building to be saved and put forward suggestions for possible new uses. An application to list the building was refused. In April 1994 the Tate Gallery announced that Bankside would be the home for the new Tate Modern. In July of the same year, an international competition was launched to select an architect for the new gallery. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron of Herzog & de Meuron were announced as the winning architects in January 1995. The £134 million conversion to the Tate Modern started in June 1995 and completed in January 2000.

The most obvious external change was the two-story glass extension on one half of the roof. Much of the original internal structure remained, including the cavernous main turbine hall, which retained the overhead travelling crane. An electrical substation, taking up the Switch House in the southern third of the building, remained on-site and owned by the French power company EDF Energy while Tate took over the northern Boiler House for Tate Modern's main exhibition spaces.

Tate Modern received 5.25 million visitors in its first year. The previous year the three existing Tate galleries had received 2.5 million visitors combined.

Extension project
The southern third of the building was retained by the French power company EDF Energy as an electrical substation. In 2006, the company released the western half of this holding and plans were made to replace the structure with a tower extension to the museum, initially planned to be completed in 2015. The tower was to be built over the old oil storage tanks, which would be converted to a performance art space. Structural, geotechnical, civil, and façade engineering and environmental consultancy was undertaken by Ramboll between 2008 and 2016.

The Tanks
The first phase of the expansion involved the conversion of three large, circular, underground oil tanks originally used by the power station into accessible display spaces and facilities areas. These opened on 18 July 2012 and closed on 28 October 2012[8] as work on the tower building continued directly above. They reopened following the completion of the Switch House extension on 17 June 2016.

The Switch House
A ten-storey tower, 65 metres high from ground level, was built above the oil tanks. The original western half of the Switch House was demolished to make room for the tower and then rebuilt around it with large gallery spaces and access routes between the main building and the new tower on level 1 (ground level) and level 4. The new galleries on level 4 have natural top lighting. A bridge built across the turbine hall on level 4 to provides an upper access route. The new building opened to the public on 17 June 2016.

The design, again by Herzog & de Meuron, has been controversial. It was originally designed with a glass stepped pyramid, but this was amended to incorporate a sloping façade in brick latticework (to match the original power-station building)[21] despite planning consent to the original design having been previously granted by the supervising authority.

The extension provides 22,492 square metres of additional gross internal area for display and exhibition spaces, performance spaces, education facilities, offices, catering and retail facilities as well as a car parking and a new external public space.'
