Bijodaira is the point of transfer between the Tateyama Cable Car and the Highland Bus. Located on a plateau 1000m high, the vicinity has a lush primeval forest of cedar and broad-leafed trees. A trail is provided on which you can enjoy a 2.5-hour round-trip walk while admiring the wild flora and birds.

Japan's Wild Year
Japan is synonymous with crowded high tech cities. In fact 73% of Japan is uninhabited forests, mountains and coast lines. Here a great diversity of wildlife ekes out an existence adapted to a country with great extremes of climate. From the tropics in the south to the sub-arctic climate of Hokkaido island. From the northernmost primates in the world, the Snow Monkeys, Bears, giant Hornets and the weird goat-antelope Serow, to the iconic Red-headed crane and the abundant Cherry Salmon, the life blood of Japanese rivers.
This is the opening sequence of 'Japan's Wild Year,' co-produced by NHNZ and Nat Geo Wild.

I'm visiting Japan's no.1 Zoo located in Northern Hokkaido's city of Asahikawa. ASAHIYAMA ZOO is an example of how keeping animals in their natural behavioral patterns makes for happier animal residents and happier human visitors!
Walk around the zoo with me for a bit.
Japan Mountain Stream Flow
Pause a moment and enjoy the peaceful flow of water. While exploring alone in the high mountains of central Japan I stopped to rest beside this small, clear stream. The temperature was just above freezing and I sat bundled in my heavy coat, warm and content after several hours of walking. While resting I found my thoughts and gaze focused on the scene shared in this video. The sight and sound of the cold, rushing waters was quite mesmerizing and with time my body and mind were enjoying a welcome sense of meditative peace. I resolved then to try and capture the scene on video to share with you. If you like, please join me for the next few minutes beside the stream. :-)

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
