Shivpuri Part 3 | Best boating experience with crocodiles | Tatya Tope Memorial
Sakhya Sagar Lake and Boat Club are located in the vicinity of the Madhav National Park in the Shivpuri District. The Madhav Sagar Lake and Sakhya Sagar Lake, created on the Manier River in 1918, are two of the prominent lakes of the region and are also important biodiversity support systems.
The Sakhya Sagar Lake lies at the edge of the forests of the Madhav National Park and has a boat club that is also known as the Sailing Club. Tourists visiting the Sailing Club can see various reptiles, like the Indian python, marsh crocodile and monitor lizard.
It was here that the famous ruler Tatya Tope was hanged to death on the 18th of April 1859 for revolting against the English authorities. Thus, you will find a memorial in the name of Tatya Tope here as a remembrance of battle for independence. You will see the sculpture of Tatya Tope with a swort in the hand fighting for freedom and self-respect. Surrounded by trees, this sculpture looks magnificent and reminds you of Maratha valour.

SHIVPURI- Famous Place | पर्यटन नगरी शिवपुरी | Madhya Pradesh
Chattri
A Chattri was built by the Scindia rulers. The structure has two main cenotaphs. The one shown in the picture is the older one dedicated to the dowager queen Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia while the one built on opposite side is a newer one dedicated to her son Madho Rao Scindia, the grandfather of former railway minister of India Madhavrao Scindia.
Both cenotaphs are surrounded by Mughal gardens and have a streak of fountains between them.
Chhatari (memorial or cenotaph) made of ornate marble is a fine example of workmanship.
Madhav National Park
The Madhav National Park surrounds the Sakhya Sagar Lake. It has variety of wild animals and birds. It used to have a significant number of tigers but these have vanished due to poor maintenance and transference of tigers to other national parks.
George Castle
George Castle stands on the highest point of the National Park. It was built by George Jivajirao Scindia for a overnight stay for tiger shooting by British king George V while he was to pass that way during his visit to India in 1911. However, the king shot a tiger on the way itself and thus did not stop at the castle.
Madhav Vilas Palace
Madhav Vilas Palace was the official residence of the Scindias during summer. It is situated in the heart of the city and is surrounded by dense gardens and forest.
It has now been converted into a training centre of the Intelligence Bureau of India giving the city a distinction of being among the very few cities in country that have a IB training centre.
Tatya Tope Memorial
Tatya Tope, a leader of Indian Rebellion of 1857 and a close aide of Rani of Jhansi, was publicly hanged on 18 April 1859 from a peepal tree. A memorial and a statue of Tatya Tope has been erected at the site.

One of these belongs to Madhav Rao Scindia, and the other to his mother Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia facing each other . The Chhatris are spectacular fusion of Hindu and Islamic architecture styles with Mughal pavilions.
Bhadaiya Kund is a natural spring, known for high mineral content. Several tourists visit this picnic spot near Shivpuri, especially during the monsoon season.

Albert Einstein dies at 76, Tatya Tope achieves martyrdom and World's first crossword puzzle book
62 years since Einstein became a memory
In 1955, on this day, Albert Einstein, one of the most prolific scientists known to humankind, passed away at the age of 76. The renowned physicist had succumbed to heart failure at a hospital in Princeton, United States. Einstein had instilled a sea change in the world’s perception regarding concepts such as space, time, gravity and energy. He was regarded as an authority on the theories of relativity. In 1921, he was bestowed with the prestigious Nobel prize as an acknowledgement for his work on the photoelectric effect. Interestingly, two years before he actually won the Nobel prize, Einstein promised to give away the prize money to his first wife Mileva Maric, as a part of their divorce agreement.
There is a well known story on Einstein's early days which says that he had failed at mathematics in school. This was dismissed by Einstein himself, who said that he had aced differential and integral calculus before he turned 15. But he was indeed opposed to the monotonous nature of the education system. This led him to miss classes often, which eventually became an obstacle for him in earning a professorship till a decade after he had passed out of school. But the fact that he had published phenomenal revelations, including the equation of E=mc2, while he worked as a small-time clerk is a reflection of his sheer brilliance.
His theory of general relativity, first made public in 1915, remained unresolved till 1919 when a solar eclipse provided the conducive environment to test the same. It was then that Einstein was propelled to the international stage and he began delivering lectures on his theories across the world.
Einstein was under the watch of the USA’s Federal Bureau of Investigation for over 22 years, suspecting him of espionage. This was because the scientist openly proclaimed his support for the civil rights movement in the United States. The investigation amounted to a hefty file of 1800 pages though the allegations remain unproven.
He was a scientist with a sense of social responsibility and believed in pacifist causes such as nuclear disarmament. This was reinforced especially after the devastating bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Einstein’s genius marvelled the world, to the extent that his brain was subjected to multiple studies after his death, in the hope of finding the secret to his fascinating intellectual prowess.
Tatya Tope killed in 1859
Ramachandra Pandurang Tope, famously known as Tatya Tope, was killed on 18 April 1859. He was among the early leaders who took up cudgels against the British Raj in the 1857 sepoy mutiny, also recalled as India’s first war of independence. The Maratha rebel was at the service of Peshwa Bajirao. Tope was an effective General despite the absence of military training.
His guerrilla warfare kept the British on their toes. Tope led the rebels to victory against the East India Company in Kanpur and also collaborated with his childhood friend Lakshmi Bai, the Rani of Jhansi to retain Gwalior. When Lakshmi Bai was killed in a swordfight, it was he who performed her last rites.
Tope, who valiantly fought 150 battles against the British, was betrayed by an insider in Gwalior and was defeated by Sir Colin Campbell. Official historical accounts state that he was hanged till death at Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh on April 18, 1859. However, “Operation Red Lotus”, a book written by his descendant Parag Tope, says that Tatya Tope was in fact killed in a battle at Chhipabarod, Rajasthan on January 1, 1859. The truth about Tope’s death thus remains contentious.
First crossword puzzle book published in 1924
A collection of the popular word game, crossword, was first published in the US on this day in 1924 by Simon and Schuster. Originally known as “word-crosses”, the engaging puzzle was already popular in the country with newspapers publishing them since a decade by then. Simply titled “The Crossword Puzzle Book”, it was a compilation of the puzzles published in the “New York World”, an American Newspaper. The collection was extremely well-received and was sent for printing for a third time after the first two editions sold out within weeks. By the end of the year, the editions of the crossword puzzles occupied the first three positions on the National Non-Fiction Best-Seller List.
