Praia do Barril (Tavira, Portugal)
The beach of Praia do Barril is located on the Ilha de Tavira, just west of the town. This huge stretch of white sand is one of the quietest beaches on the southern Algarve coast, but this in no way reflects on the beach itself.
One reason the beach doesn't get too busy is it is a bit of a walk from Tavira itself. Located just across the Ria Formosa from the village of Santa Luzia, Praia do Barrill is around 4-5km from the town. Access is easy and there is a pedestrian pontoon bridge across to the island. However, if you don't fancy the walk, a seasonal miniature train runs from the Pedras d’El Rei resort. B
As a Blue Flag award beach, Barril has plenty of facilities, clean water and is lifeguard patrolled in the summer months. At the far western end of the beach is an officially designated nudist zone, one of the few in Portugal.

TAVIRA is a Portuguese city in Faro District, and is located in the Eastern Algarve. It is crossed by the River Gilão and is full of beautiful buildings which exhibit their characteristic four sloping sides roofs (pyramidal). In Tavira there are many historical churches (37 in total). In recent years, Tavira has had a great development in golf. Ferry to Tavira Island and Tavira Beach
Tavira, in the Algarve region of Portugal, is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. Its beach is on Tavira Island, a short ferry ride across an inland waterway. When the main tourist boat ferry from Tavira's city centre closes for the cooler months, this ferry takes up the slack. It costs 1.50 Euros per person and is worth the ride if only for the scenery.
Tavira Beach is beautiful and not very busy in October.

Yummy Food and Restaurants in Tavira, Portugal
There is an abundance of restaurants in Tavira. Most are small and you need reservations unless you come early or very late. We ate at four different restaurants which ranged from good to excellent regardless of cost since all were reasonable.

Tavira, Set on either side of the meandering Rio Gilão, Tavira is a charming town. The ruins of a hilltop castle, an old Roman bridge and a smattering of Gothic and Renaissance churches are among Tavira’s historic attractions. Its enticing assortment of restaurants and guesthouses makes it an excellent base for exploring the Algarve’s eastern section.
Tavira is ideal for wandering; the warren of cobblestone streets hides pretty, historic gardens and shady plazas. There’s a small, active fishing port and a modern market. Only 3km from the coast, Tavira is the launching point for the stunning, unspoilt beaches of Ilha de Tavira.

Tavira Island (Portuguese: Ilha de Tavira) is found South of the city and can only be reached by boat, which departs from the city center and from Quatro-Aguas. The Island is 11Km long and varies between 1Km and 150m width. It’s considered to be one of the best beaches in the Algarve Region, and it includes areas where naturism can be practised without problems. The Island belongs to the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, which is popular it’s birds and flamingos, a delight for bird lovers.
