The Largest Monastery in India | Tawang | Vlog 12 | #Tourof2017 - North-East India
About:
I spent a day in Tawang exploring its famous monastery. It's massive, to say the least. The Tawang Monastery is said to be the largest in India and the 2nd largest in the world.
The weather then turned foul, so I was not able to see anything more in Tawang. I began my return journey the next day. More riding, more adventure and another crossing of the intimidating Sela Pass.

Arunachal's Monpa tribe celebrates Torgya Festival in Tawang
Torgya Festival - An epitome of the strength of faith
In a remote, barely accessible corner of India’s North Eastern extreme lies the historically important town of Tawang.
The headquarter of the Tawang district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh; it is located in close proximity to the Indo – Tibetan and Indo – Bhutanese borders.
Synonymous for most Indians with the Indo – China war of 1962, Tawang is a Buddhist majority town with a small population of Bengali shop owners as well.
In the month of January every year, when temperatures fall to as low as 15 degrees celcius below freezing, when heavy snowfall and the biting cold bring life to a standstill, a grand structure of Buddhist architecture dating to the seventeenth century gets abuzz with spiritual and religious fervour. Much like other Buddhist monasteries, it is located on a promontory on the outskirts of the city.
The second largest Buddhist monastery in the world, outside Lhasa in Tibet, the Gaden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery plays host to a very important Buddhist festival.
A festival that is the epitome of the strength of faith.
It is the time of the Torgya Festival!!
Celebrated to ward off evil spirits and usher in happiness and prosperity, Torgya is a festival of the Monpa tribe of Tibetan Buddhists.

Best of Monastic Dances of Torgya Dungyur Festival in Tawang
The Torgya Festival is an annual three day festival of the Monpa tribe of Buddhists, held popularly in Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh. Though not on the itinerary of many mainstream tourists, the Torgya festival is a three day extravaganza of beautifully coloured costumes, dances and festivities. The monastic dances are symbolic in nature and are done to drive out evil spirits. Each dance in itself lasts for hours and the dancers wear colourful costumes and masks of deities and animals. When seen in slow motion, the dances get a richer hue and showcase a very different emotion.

Fly over Tawang - world's second largest monastery in Arunachal, India
The crown of Buddhism in Arunachal Pradesh, the Tawang monastery forms the core of the Lamaistic faith of the Mahayana school of Buddhism in the region, making it the largest monastery of India and the second largest of Asia. Also known as the 'Galden Namgyal Lhatse', the Tawang monastery was established by Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso in the year 1860-61. The Tawang monastery, standing as high as 10,000 feet above the sea level amidst the picturesque Himalayan ranges sloping towards the east, offers a panoramic view of the Tawang-Chu valley. The monastery, which houses more than 300 monks(actual capacity 700 monks), is the main centre of spirituality and religion for the people residing in and around Tawang.
The majestic monastery can be entered from its northern side along the ridge by the gate 'Kakaling', which is a hut-like structure with its walls made of stone. The ceiling or the interior roof of the Kakaling are painted with Mandalas or the Kying-Khores, while the inside walls have been painted with pictures of the saints and divinities. After Kakaling, comes the main gate of the monastery in its northern side. Its eastern wall is about 925 feet long while the height differs in between 10 to 20 feet.
The Tawang monastery houses several structures within its premises, the most prominent being the 'Dukhang'. The Dukhang or the assembly hall, which is the main building of the monastery, stands on the northern side of the main court. This three storied complex houses a temple and a 'Labrang', which is the establishment of an Abbot. The interiors of the Dukhang are equally well marked with a magnificent work of art. Its inner walls have been painted with the sketches of several saints and Bodhisattvas, whereas the northern wall of the hall is covered with an altar, used for religious ceremonies; and again, towards its(altar) left lies a silver silk casket holding the Thangkas. The Thangkas have been dedicated to the chief deity of monastery, Goddess Shri Devi, also known as Palden Lhamo. This Thangka, which was painted(Painting known as Ja-Droi Ma) with blood drawn from the fifth Dalai Lama's nose, was given to Merak Lama by His Holy Highness the fifth Dalai Lama himself. Besides, the northern side of the building nests the largest image of the monastery, a huge statue(26 feet high) of the Lord Buddha, standing in the middle of the hall.
