Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia
Kota Kinabalu formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of the state of Sabah, Malaysia. It is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located to its east. Kota Kinabalu has a population of 452,058 and, including the adjacent Penampang and Putatan districts, the metro area has an estimated population of 628,725.In the 15th century, the area of Kota Kinabalu was under the influence of Bruneian Empire. In the 19th century, the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) first set up a settlement near the Gaya Island. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1897 by a freedom fighter named Mat Salleh. In July 1899, the place which is located opposite to the Gaya Island, was identified as a suitable place for settlements. Development in the area was started soon after that; and the place was named Api-api before it was renamed after the vice-chairman of BNBC as Jesselton. Jesselton became a major trading port in the area, and was connected to the North Borneo Railway. Jesselton suffered destructions during World War II. Japanese occupation of Jesselton had caused several local uprisings but they were eventually defeated by the Japanese. After the war, BNBC was unable to finance the high cost of reconstructions and the place was ceded to the British Crown Colony. The British Crown declared Jesselton as the new capital of North Borneo in 1946 and started to rebuild the town. After the formation of Malaysia, North Borneo was reamed as Sabah. In 1967, Jesselton was renamed as Kota Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu was granted city status in 2000.

Borneo Tree Climbing
In the summer of 2012 Cornell Tree Climbing joined the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for the first season of its multi-year expedition to Borneo. Cornell Outdoor Education's tree climbing division provides climbing lessons to and support for canopy researchers worldwide.
Minecraft tree “probably” the tallest tree in the Tropics
A tree the height of 20 London double-decker buses has been discovered in Malaysia by conservation scientists from the University of Cambridge monitoring the impact of human activity on the biodiversity of a pristine rainforest.
The Yellow Meranti stands 89.5m tall in an area of forest known as ‘Sabah’s Lost World’ – the Maliau Basin Conservation Area, one of Malaysia’s last few untouched wildernesses. Its height places it ahead of the previous record-holder, an 88.3m Yellow Meranti in the Tawau Hills National Park.
The giant tree was discovered during reconnaissance flights by scientists led by Dr David Coomes from Cambridge's Department of Plant Sciences working with the Sabah Forestry Department to help protect the area’s biodiversity. It comes at a crucial time, as the Sabah government takes measures to protect and restore heavily logged areas in the region.
The Yellow Meranti is also one of the species that can be grown in the computer game Minecraft.

MIRI COASTAL CITY , BORNEO SARAWAK Malaysia
Sources from :
Miri /ˈmɪriː/ (Jawi: ميري; Chinese: 美里; pinyin: Méi Lǐ) is a coastal city in northeastern Sarawak, Malaysia, located near the border of Brunei, on the island of Borneo. The city covers an area of 997.43 square kilometres (385.11 sq mi),[2] located 798 kilometres (496 mi) northeast of Kuching[6] and 329 kilometres (204 mi) southwest of Kota Kinabalu.[7] Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak,[8] with a population of 358,020 as of 2016.[5] The city is also the capital of Miri District of the Miri Division.
Before Miri was founded, Marudi was the administrative centre of the northern region of Sarawak. Miri was founded in 1910 when the first oil well was drilled by Royal Dutch Shell. The discovery of an oil field in Miri has led to rapid development of Miri town. Miri became the administrative centre of the northern region of Sarawak by 1929. During World War II, the Miri oil fields were destroyed by the Brooke government to sabotage Japanese operations in Southeast Asia but to no avail; Miri town was the first landing point of Japanese troops in Borneo. The subsequent Japanese occupation led Miri to become a target of Allied air raids which caused the destruction of oil refinery facilities in Miri. The petroleum industry continued to be a major player in the city's economy after the war. Oil exploration has moved offshore since the 1950s, but subsequently new inland oil fields were found in 1989 and 2011. In 1974, the formation of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas led to co-operation between Petronas and Shell on oil exploration in the Miri region. In 2005, Miri became the 10th city in Malaysia to be granted official city status, the first non-state capital city to be bestowed such status.
Miri is the main tourist gateway to the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park; Loagan Bunut National Park; Lambir Hills National Park; Niah National Park and Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park.[9][10] The Gunung Mulu National Park with its Sarawak Chamber, which is the largest known cave chamber in the world by area, remains one of the favourite ecotourism destinations in Miri.[8] Miri is also the birthplace of the Malaysian petroleum industry. Other major industries in the city include timber, oil palm and tourism.

The Rainforest.. Sabah
Borneo island
Borneo is the third largest non-continental island in the world (after Greenland and New Guinea).
The Borneo rainforest is estimated to be around 140 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world. It is the centre of the evolution and distribution of many endemic species of plants and animals, and the rainforest is one of the few remaining natural habitats for the endangered Bornean orangutan.
Ecology
During the Pleistocene glacial epoch, all of Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and mainland Indochina were part of the same landmass. This allowed plants and animals to migrate from one region to the next. Now Borneo is separated from the Malay Peninsula and the other islands, but still shares much of the same plant and animal diversity.
Flora
The lowlands of Borneo are home to the richest [rainforest] in the world. The climate provides an ideal growing environment for approximately 10,000 species of plant (more than in the whole continent of Africa). Among these are some 2,000 orchids and 3,000 trees, including 267 [Dipterocarpaceae] tropical rainforest trees, of which 155 are endemic to Borneo. This makes the island the center of the world's diversity for dipterocarps.
Fauna
Borneo's forests are some of the most biodiverse on the planet. According to WWF, the island is estimated have at least 222 species of mammals (44 of which are endemic), The terrestrial mammals are dominated by the Chiroptera (102 species of bats) and rodents (61 species of rats and mice), 420 resident birds (58 endemic), 100 amphibians, 91 species of marine mammals, 394 fish (19 endemic), and 15,000 plants (6,000 endemic) — more than 400 of which have been discovered since 1994. Surveys have found more than 700 species of trees in a 10 hectare plot — a number equal to the total number of trees in Canada and the United States combined.
It is an important refuge for many endemic forest species, including the Bornean Orangutan, Bornean clouded leopard, Bornean elephant, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Bornean Sun Bear, Proboscis monkey, more than 400 wild birds, 8 hornbill species and 58 endemic species.
Invertebrates
Dwarfing any other animal group in sheer number of species and population sizes, Borneo’s invertebrate species have successfully adapted to the island’s tropical rainforest habitats.
The arthropod fauna of Borneo's lowland forests has been estimated at 3,000 species, with Hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants), Coleoptera (beetles), flies (Diptera) and true bugs (Hemiptera) showing the most species and largest population sizes.
Reptiles
Borneo is home to countless reptiles. Numerous species of lizards, crocodiles, fresh and salt water turtles, tortoises, snakes and frogs to name but a few. Some of the more famous of the 160 species of snake include the reticulated python, arguably the largest snake in the world with individuals found up to 30ft long. Of the venomous snakes the King Cobra, the longest venomous snake in the world.
105 species of lizards, in 35 genera from nine families, are now known from Borneo.
There are 100 species of amphibians.
One notable species is the Bornean Flat-headed Frog
Highly commendable action by the Sabah Forestry Department for setting aside more forests for protection and restoration in Sabah.
