Tawharanui Regional Park | Anchor Bay | Day Trip | Auckland | Travel Vlog | New Zealand
How to get to Tāwharanui Regional Park:
Tāwharanui is a 90km or 80 minute drive from central Auckland.
Take SH1 north to Warkworth. Follow the signs to Matakana. When you are 1km past Matakana, turn right at the Ōmaha turnoff and drive 11km along Takatū Road to the park.
What to do in Tāwharanui Regional Park:
Stop at the interpretation area just inside the sanctuary gate for park and open sanctuary information, and visit the carved pou (post) by the western edge of the lagoon.
Take one of the seven signposted walks on the park. They begin at Anchor Bay and the Lagoon, and range from easy strolls to the two hour North/South Coast Track. A favourite for many people is the
Ecology Trail (2 hours) signposted from Anchor Bay.
Swim, surf or snorkel at Anchor Bay, or dive in the Marine Protected area on the north coast. Fishing is not allowed here but is allowed on the south coast and at Jones Bay near the park entrance.
Stay a while and experience the park's historical and natural values. Book a camp site in the camp ground, or book a stay in the cottage that is available for rental (phone 09 366 2000).
Please do not remove or disturb any archaeological remains or shipwrecks. They provide an important record of our history and are protected by law.

Tawharanui Regional park, Auckland, New Zealand
Tawharanui Regional park, Auckland, New Zealand
During the two weeks school holiday in April, we explored the Matakana region in upper north area of Auckland. We went to the popular Matakana farmer Saturday market, where you can taste delicious food, and buy fresh veges and fruits. After visiting the market, we drove 25 minutes to Tawharanui Regional park, which is New Zealand's first open sanctuary which integrates conservation, sustainable farming and recreation. The park has beautiful white sand beaches, and interesting rocks to climb.
The information below is from the website
This regional park is one of north Auckland's best-kept secrets. If a swell is running from the north or east, come ready to play in the surf.
The road to Tawharanui heads east from the riverside town of Warkworth off State Highway 1. You'll soon pass through the rural area of Matakana, with its well-known craft studios, cafes and vineyards. The road continues through farmland and ends with a winding gravel section.
Once a large private farm, the Tawharanui Regional Park covers the end of a peninsula that extends into the Pacific Ocean just north of Kawau Island. The long, sandy beach on the northern side is considered to be one of the best swimming and surfing venues in the Auckland region. There are grassed areas above the beach furnished with shady pohutukawa trees - a picnic paradise.
An ecology trail starts at the far end of the beach, beyond a protected breeding area of very rare New Zealand dotterel birds. The trail passes along a rounded-stone beach before climbing up across farmland to a valley of beautiful native forest. Points of interest are marked along the way and copies of the trail guide are available from the hut at Anchor Bay. There are several longer walking trails in the area, including one to panoramic views from high on the end of the peninsula.
Tawharanui Regional Park is about 80 minutes drive north of Auckland. There is a tent camping site and bookings must be made by contacting the Auckland Regional Council. This popular site is booked well in advance for the summer holiday months.

On the way back to Auckland we visited Parry Kauri park in Warkworth and saw the nearly 1000 years old Kauri tree.
The information below is from the website
Set on a remote peninsula, Tawharanui Regional Park boasts some of Auckland most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands. Tawharanui Regional Park is New Zealand's first open sanctuary which integrates conservation (dogs are strictly forbidden), sustainable farming and recreation.
Tawharanui Regional Park offers a large Department of Conservation campground for tents and motorhomes (Bookings are advisable). Walking tracks take in spectacular views of the bays and marine park, established over thirty years ago, which provides a good time for divers, snorkelers and bird watchers.
Tāwharanui is a 90km or 80 minute drive from central Auckland.

NZ06: Visiting my dad and eating delicious NZ treats
Drove to Warkworth (about 25 minutes north of Orewa) to visit my dad. I was joined by my sister (Sarah) and niece (Jasmine). Enjoyed fish 'n chips and fed the seagulls (which is generally frowned upon). On the way back to Orewa, I stopped along the way a couple of times for the scenic view: Puhoi River and Wenderholm Regional Park and Orewa Beach. Also enjoyed a Cookie Time McFlurry, apple pie and orange chocolate chip ice cream.
Scandrett Regional Park, Auckland
Situated 82 kilometres north of downtown Auckland on the north east tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula, Scandrett Regional Park features an attractive beach, historic farm buildings and rocky headlands.
