Winter Drive From Newport On Tay Over Tay Road Bridge To Dundee Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of a Winter, sunny, but cold road trip drive, with music, from from Newport-on-Tay in Fife across the Tay Road Bridge which spans the Firth of Tay on visit to Dundee in Tayside. The Tay Road Bridge carries the A92 road across the Firth of Tay from Newport-on-Tay in Fife to Dundee in Scotland, just downstream of the Tay Rail Bridge. At around 1.4 miles long it is one of the longest road bridges in Europe, and was opened in 1966, replacing the old Tay ferry. The bridge was designed by consulting engineers WA Fairhurst & Partners of Glasgow and Dundee, under the direct supervision of the firm's founding partner, civil engineer William Fairhurst.

Winter Drive To Newport On Tay North East Fife Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of a Winter, sunny, but cold road trip drive, with music, from Gauldry, through Wormit, to the old ferry terminal in Newport-on-Tay, North East Fife. Major expansion of the village took place in the nineteenth century, and this increase was triggered initially by the development of the ferry service between Newport and Dundee. The ferry buildings were erected in 1878 and these Victorian pier buildings in Newport were once a hub of activity, as passengers prepared to take the ferry across the River Tay. The area around the ferry terminal was the unofficial high street at the time, the buildings were home to fishmongers, bakers and butchers. But in 1966 the Tay Road Bridge opened, providing a quicker route across the river, and bringing that era to an end. The buildings are now used by the University of Dundee for its marine studies as the Tay Estuary Research Centre.

Fife Cycle loop - Start and End Tay Road Bridge
This is one of my regular cycle routes around Fife, taking in Newport on Tay, Wormit, Bottomcraig and Balmerino, Gauldry, Kilmany, Logie, Balmullo, Leuchars, Guardbridge, St. Andrews, back to Leuchars, Tentsmuir Forest and Tayport.
There are a few steep climbs (slow ones if you're on knobbly 2.3 tyres!), including one up a rutted, grassy track. You can shorten the loop by about 14 miles by heading straight into Gauldry from Wormit and cutting out St. Andrews, and you can easily add another 10 - 15 miles by exploring some of the trails in Tentsmuir.
I got caught out with a bit of chain suck just outside Balmerino, which you'll hear on the soundtrack, and I had a bit of a cold, so apologies for the occasional cough and the continual sniffing.
Sir William Arrols Tay Bridge
Alexander Wilson`s photographic record depicting the construction of Sir William Arrol's Tay Bridge. Look out for further slide videos in this series.
William Arrol, the son of a cotton-spinner, was born in Houston, Renfrewshire in 1839. He began work in a cotton mill at the age of 10 and four years started training as a blacksmith. Arrol taught himself mechanics and hydraulics at night school and by the age of 29 decided to start his own engineering business in Glasgow.
In 1865 Arrol's company built a railway viaduct at Greenock and in 1878 secured the contract for the Caledonian Railway Bridge over the Clyde. In 1882 was asked to construct the replacement Tay Bridge that had collapsed in 1879. His company, Tancred Arrol, also built the Forth Railway Bridge (1883-90); then the largest steel bridge in the world. This was followed by Tower Bridge in London (1886-94). Arrol's company also built bridges in Australia (Hawkesbury Bride) and Egypt (Nile Bridge).

Old Dundee reel pt 2 - Demolition of Overgate (street) and Tay rd bridge opening
Found this old 8mm reel in Tayside Reusers - this includes shots of the old Overgate shopping centre, the demolition of Dundee West (note the guys taking it apart by hand at the top of the tower!), demolition of the old Overgate street, Tay bridge opening, a parade in the yet-to-be pedestrianised High St. (same day as the bridge opening?) and a ferry to Newport and back again with some great views.
If anyone knows who the dapper chap in pt 1 is, let me know! I have loads of their old family footage - weddings, holidays etc.. Would be great to get it back to them.
December Late Afternoon Drive Over Tay Road Bridge To Dundee Scotland
Tour Scotland December video of a late afternoon drive North on the A92 road across the Tay Road Bridge which spans the Firth of Tay from Newport-on-Tay in Fife to Dundee in Tayside. The bridge was designed by William Fairhurst and construction began in March 1963 with the infilling of West Graving Dock, King William Dock and Earl Grey docks in Dundee. The construction was undertaken by Duncan Logan Construction Ltd. Controversially, construction required the demolition of Dundee's Royal Arch where Queen Victoria had entered the city on a royal visit. Rubble from the Victoria arch was used as foundations for the on-ramp. The completed bridge was officially opened by the Queen Mother on 18 August 1966.

Logie Kirk Ancient Cemetery, PART I, May 2014 by Sheila
A great discovery--the Ancient Cemetery at Logie Kirk---Two other cemeteries can also be found further down the Roman Road ---larger and newer. Witches Craig campsite is about 1 mile away thru a wood and I stayed here during the family tree trip and it was via spontaneous walks that I made the cemetery discoveries and this was absolutely fantastic for my family tree research---it was so good and all my research was reinforced by the memorials and inscriptions found----verification 'in the field'.....the best kind as one walks in the footsteps of the ancestors and stumbles across Tree Treasure---it invigorates the research and makes all the hard work come to life and have meaning---gives meaning---such Passion for FT !!!
Logie Kirk Ancient Cemetery, Part IV, May 2014
