Chuckanut Oysters - Washington Oyster Farm Taylor Shellfish On Chuckanut Drive
Chuckanut Drive is a popular day trip destination for Oyster lover in Western Washington. Chuckanut Drive Taylor Shellfish Farm sells fresh oysters and other seafood that you can take home with you or enjoy at the water's edge in their picnic area. You can buy charcoal there or bring your own as well.
There are also restaurants along Chuckanut drive that serve fresh local oysters for you to enjoy. It is worth noting that some of the Chuckanut area restaurants have opened and closed in recent years so you may want to do some research online if you are planing to have a sitdown lunch overlooking Chuckanut Bay.
One of the main attractions to Chuckanut Drive is the fact it is a winding, narrow, and rocky coastal road. RV's and other large vehicles are not allowed on the southern portion of the road. If you are in an RV bound for Larrabee State park you need to travel to Bellingham and drive south on Chuckanut Dr. to the Park.

a day in Edison on the Samish June 24th 2009 040
Samish Island is located off the northwest coast of Washington State. In the past it really was an island, but has been connected to the mainland by a dike since 1930.
It is informally considered to be one of the inner San Juan islands, along with Guemes, Eliza, Vendovi, Lummi, Cypress, Sinclair, and other small islands to the east of the larger San Juan Islands.
Samish island was part of the ancestral homelands of the Samish Tribe a Coast Salish group of the Pacific Northwest.
The island is located on the estuary of the Samish River which comes into Samish Bay and Alice Bay on the southeast side of the island. Padilla Bay in located on the southwest side of the island.
As recently as 1887, according to maps made by the U.S. Navy, Samish Island was separated from the flats by a slough or salt marsh. Dikes and drainage ditches were built to create more farmland. By the 1930's the connection was dry between the island the mainland.
Samish island is generally considered part of the Nanaimo Formation. This formation is much younger than the other terranes in the San Juan Islands and consequently is much less deformed.
Samish Bay is the site of several oyster growing operations: Blau Oyster, Taylor Shellfish farms along Chuckanut Drive, and several small oyster growers along the shorelines of Samish Island.
Harvesting Oysters (for Dummies!)
Many public clam and oyster beaches around Washington State's Puget Sound and Hood Canal are only accessible by boat, and make great sea kayaking destinations. Refer to the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Shellfish Harvesting Rules as well as the Department of Health Shellfish Safety Site.

Road to Edison (story narrated by Patricia Herlevi)
I wrote this short story after visiting Edison, Washington one Christmas holiday with my family. The characters are purely fiction and I don't even think there is a sign that says, Welcome to Edison.
The story takes place in November but I lost the photographs I took during Christmas prior to writing the story. So I'm substituting the winter photos with spring photos I took in 2015.
Please do not copy photographs or use the story as your own. I'm not charging anyone to hear my stories or view my photographs by posting them on YouTube so please respect my copyrights. Thank you.

facebook com/stopcoal - Kate Bowers from Bow WA unloads about Coal Train impacts!
Kate Bowers at Skagit's McIntyre Hall speaks at the public's Mt. Vernon chance to provide input in person on the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal.
Scoping for the environmental impact statement (EIS) is under way, and although the public will not vote on the project (YET!), upcoming meetings allow residents to have their concerns and recommendations recorded.
Skagit County's chance comes at 4 p.m. Monday at McIntyre Hall, 2405 E. College Way. Concerned citizens also can file comments for the scoping process until Jan. 21 online, by email or mail.
The meeting aims to gather public opinion about what effects and how far afield the environmental impact review should consider. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state Department of Ecology and Whatcom County Planning have teamed up to perform the environmental review.
The review could be narrow, focusing only on the site itself, or wider, looking at all affected areas along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line — including Mount Vernon and Burlington.
The first of seven scoping meetings for the project took place Oct. 27 in Bellingham and was attended by nearly 2,000 people, according to the Bellingham Herald. A meeting in Friday Harbor took place Saturday.
Among the issues
Seattle-based company SSA Marine has proposed building a bulk export terminal at Cherry Point, north of Bellingham, that would ship dry cargo — mostly coal, but also grain and potash — to Asian markets. It would be the largest facility of its kind on the West Coast.

We Went to Rescue Newborn Puppies But Never Expected This | Howl Of A Dog Rescue
Howl Of A Dog Rescue was contacted to save newborn orphan puppies found abandoned on side of a country road. Baby animals crying, apparently in distress, coming from the tall grass on side of a country road were heard by a local who alerted Howl Of A Dog. At first, we thought that maybe some wild animal or stray dog or cat had given birth there. We didn't expect to find newly born puppies abandoned in such a cruel way. It turned out to be one of the most heartbreaking cases of animal cruelty we have dealt with: there were several puppies dumped in a bag and simply left there to die. It was a rainy and very chilly autumn morning and their bodies were so cold that it was a miracle their little hearts were still beating
Two of the puppies were out, near the bag, we placed them safe aside and hurried to check the content of the bag and take out the ones that were still inside.
The puppies were newly born and still had their umbilical cords attached.
We inspected the area carefully to make sure there were no other puppies, and found another one trapped in the grass.
Sadly, things have taken an even more tragic turn. Four of the rescued puppies passed away shortly after we arrived at the center.
But the three surviving puppies - Lizzie, Taz and Bernie - have made an amazing recovery, growing into healthy playful pups. They are 5 months old, fully vaccinated and microchipped.
They need now their own loving homes, if you’d like to make any of them a part of your family, please visit or send us an email on contact@howlofadog.org . The puppies are in our care in Romania, but for anyone abroad who would like to adopt them please note that we also facilitate international adoptions (howlofadog.org/adoption-procedure/).
Thank you!
Update: one of the puppies, Bernie, was adopted, here is him at his forever home:
Abandon is animal cruelty! Don’t throw life away. Spay & Neuter your pets.

SUMMARY
=======
American cuisine reflects the history of the United States, blending the culinary contributions of various groups of people from around the world, including indigenous American Indians, African Americans, Asians, Europeans, Pacific Islanders, and South Americans. Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the basis of American cuisine. The European settlement of the Americas yielded the introduction of a number of various ingredients, spices, herbs, and cooking styles to the latter. The various styles continued expanding well into the 19th and 20th centuries, proportional to the influx of immigrants from many different nations; this influx nurtured a rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.
When the colonists came to the colonies, they farmed animals for clothing and meat in a similar fashion to what they had done in Europe. They had cuisine similar to their previous Dutch and British cuisines. The American colonial diet varied depending on the settled region in which someone lived. Commonly hunted game included deer, bear, buffalo, and wild turkey. A number of fats and oils made from animals served to cook much of the colonial foods. Prior to the Revolution, New Englanders consumed large quantities of rum and beer, as maritime trade provided them relatively easy access to the goods needed to produce these items: rum was the distilled spirit of choice, as the main ingredient, molasses, was readily available from trade with the West Indies. In comparison to the northern colonies, the southern colonies were quite diverse in their agricultural diet.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Americans developed many new foods. During the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, c. 1890s–1920s, food production and presentation became more industrialized. One characteristic of American cooking is the fusion of multiple ethnic or regional approaches into completely new cooking styles. A wave of celebrity chefs began with Julia Child and Graham Kerr in the 1970s, with many more following after the rise of cable channels, such as the Food Network and Cooking Channel, in the late 20th century.

SUMMARY
=======
Operation Crossroads was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946. They were the first nuclear weapon tests since Trinity in July 1945, and the first detonations of nuclear devices since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The purpose of the tests was to investigate the effect of nuclear weapons on warships.
The Crossroads tests were the first of many nuclear tests held in the Marshall Islands, and the first to be publicly announced beforehand and observed by an invited audience, including a large press corps. They were conducted by Joint Army/Navy Task Force One, headed by Vice Admiral William H. P. Blandy rather than by the Manhattan Project, which had developed nuclear weapons during World War II. A fleet of 95 target ships was assembled in Bikini Lagoon and hit with two detonations of Fat Man plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapons of the kind dropped on Nagasaki, each with a yield of 23 kilotons of TNT (96 TJ).
The first test was Able. The bomb was named Gilda after Rita Hayworth's character in the 1946 film Gilda, and was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress Dave's Dream of the 509th Bombardment Group on July 1, 1946. It detonated 520 feet (158 m) above the target fleet and caused less than the expected amount of ship damage because it missed its aim point by 2,130 feet (649 m).
The second test was Baker. The bomb was known as Helen of Bikini and was detonated 90 feet (27 m) underwater on July 25, 1946. Radioactive sea spray caused extensive contamination. A third deep-water test named Charlie was planned for 1947 but was canceled primarily because of the United States Navy's inability to decontaminate the target ships after the Baker test. Ultimately, only nine target ships were able to be scrapped rather than scuttled. Charlie was rescheduled as Operation Wigwam, a deep-water shot conducted in 1955 off the California coast.
Bikini's native residents agreed to evacuate the island, and were evacuated on board the LST-861, with most moving to the Rongerik Atoll. In the 1950s, a series of large thermonuclear tests rendered Bikini unfit for subsistence farming and fishing because of radioactive contamination. Bikini remains uninhabited as of 2015, though it is occasionally visited by sport divers. Planners attempted to protect participants in the Operation Crossroads tests against radiation sickness, but one study showed that the life expectancy of participants was reduced by an average of three months. The Baker test's radioactive contamination of all the target ships was the first case of immediate, concentrated radioactive fallout from a nuclear explosion. Chemist Glenn T. Seaborg, the longest-serving chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, called Baker the world's first nuclear disaster.

SUMMARY
=======
New Haven is a coastal city in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is located on New Haven Harbor on the northern shore of Long Island Sound in New Haven County, Connecticut, and is part of the New York metropolitan area. With a population of 129,779 as determined by the 2010 United States Census, it is the second-largest city in Connecticut after Bridgeport. New Haven is the principal municipality of Greater New Haven, which had a total population of 862,477 in 2010.New Haven was the first planned city in America. Founded in 1638 by English Puritans, a year later eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, creating what is commonly known as the Nine Square Plan. The central common block is the New Haven Green, a 16-acre (6 ha) square, and the center of Downtown New Haven. The Green is now a National Historic Landmark and the Nine Square Plan is recognized by the American Planning Association as a National Planning Landmark.New Haven is the home of Yale University. As New Haven's biggest taxpayer and employer, Yale serves as an integral part of the city's economy. Health care (hospitals and biotechnology), professional services (legal, architectural, marketing, and engineering), financial services, and retail trade also contribute to the city's economic activity.
The city served as co-capital of Connecticut from 1701 until 1873, when sole governance was transferred to the more centrally located city of Hartford. New Haven has since billed itself as the Cultural Capital of Connecticut for its supply of established theaters, museums, and music venues. New Haven had the first public tree planting program in America, producing a canopy of mature trees (including some large elms) that gave New Haven the nickname The Elm City.
