-- About this video --
Today we are doing a free activity in Te Anau which is the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary. To get there is a 1km walk between the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, following the perimeter of the lake, until you reach the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary.
Along the walk, we stop by for views of Lake Te Anau before continuing to the bird sanctuary. Birds are kept here as part of breeding programs or rehabilitated util they are fit enough to be released back into the wild. We see all sorts of fascinating New Zealand bird species up close. This is one of the best places where to see New Zealand birds.
Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is a New Zealand Bird Sanctuary run by the Department of Conservation of New Zealand. If you were wondering what a wildlife activity in New Zealand could be, then this is one of them. We see birds like the takahe, kaka, morepork, kakariki, ducks and more!
So what do you think of this bird sanctuary in New Zealand? Would you add the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary to your must-do list? LUK in the comments.

-- About this video --
This is it, we are finally leaving Queenstown and heading for the Southland region. Our first stop and base for the next few days is Te Anau – the gateway to the Fiordland National Park.
When we arrive in Te Anau, we check in at the Real Journeys office and board our cruise to the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves. There, we board the boat and cruise out to the western shores of Lake Te Anau and the Te Anau Caves. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are one of the best things to do in Te Anau.
Inside the Real Journeys building at the caves, we get a quick presentation on the lifecycle of the glowworms before heading in small groups into the caves.
A walkway leads through the Te Anau Glowworm Caves to waterfalls, trout pools and close-up encounters with glow worms. Then we reach a small boat for an opportunity to float right underneath a whole ceiling of glowworms. Right here is one of the best places to see glow worms in New Zealand.
After seeing the New Zealand glowworms, we make our way back out of the caves and into the forest of the Fiordland National Park where we learn more about the bird native species.
So what do you think of the Glowworms in Te Anau? Would you see the Te Anau Glowworms in New Zealand? LUK in the comments!

Whito and Aka, endangered Takahe birds, Te Anau, New Zealand
Whito and Aka are Takahe birds, an endangered species. These two live in the Bird Sanctuary in Te Anau, New Zealand. In this video, Whito is snacking on his breakfast, which included peas, carrots, corn, and grains. Aka passes nearby. Whito cannot walk very well due to an issue in his spine.
Takahe birds were thought to be extinct in 1898. But a flock was discovered again in 1948! It is rare that we have a second chance with an animal species we thought was extinct. Volunteers and government staff members are working hard to help the Takahe continue to live. We were honored by the chance to spend time with these endangered birds.
For more information on Takahe, see their Wikipedia page at

-- About this video --
Today on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year web series we are visiting Zealandia in Wellington. Zealandia is a wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand with a protective predator proof fence. Native birds are abundant here where it is safe from invasive pests. We learn a lot about the native ecosystem and the threat of introduced pests at the Zealandia Museum.
After being given a map of multiple walks around Zealandia in Wellington, we start walking to see more and more New Zealand birds. We see kaka, tui, takahe, North Island robin, shags and so much more!
Feeding stations in Zealandia allow you to see New Zealand native birds up-close.
We also bump into one of the Zealandia Ecosanctuary volunteers who gives us a quick tour of Zealandia to explain more about the native plants and birds of New Zealand. We even see the weta, a giant New Zealand insect.
If you want to learn about New Zealand’s eco-system, it’s native wildlife and the New Zealand birds, then Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington is a great place to start to get informed.
So what do you think of Zealandia in Wellington? Is this wildlife sanctuary in Wellington a place you would put on your New Zealand bucket list?

New Zealand, Te Anau - Takahe, almost extinct flightless bird
Thought to be extinct, this bird was rediscovered in 1948. There are only about 263 left as of 2013. Look after the birds and the forest flourishes. If the forest flourishes, the birds flourish.
South Island Kaka at the Te Anau Wildlife Centre. Part 1.
South Island Kaka at the Te Anau Wildlife Centre. Part 1.
The New Zealand Kaka, also known as Kākā, (Nestor meridionalis) is a New Zealand parrot endemic to the native forests of New Zealand.
Te Anau Wildlife Centre cares for some of the rarest birds on the plant. They are beautiful, variegated, funny, smart, noisy, sweet, and totally enchanting to be around.
This centre is run by New Zealand's Department of Conservation, and houses native birds which are rare, endangered, injured or needing special care. It takes the form of aviaries and enclosures scattered among parklands on the edge of Lake Te Anau, about a kilometre from the town of Te Anau in the south island. Beneficiaries of this scenic sanctuary include the kereru (native pigeon), pukeko (blue flamingo), tui, kea, kakariki, kaka, takahe, and weka.
Although it can be reached by car, a more pleasant way to get there (weather permitting) is by following the path along the edge of the lake - about 15 minutes walk from the town's visitor centre is all it takes. You can get quite close to some of them, and information panels tell you something about what you're looking at.
