Ride the Te Ara o Whareroa trail
Two years in the planning and one year in the making, the Te Ara o Whareroa trail officially opened to the public in January 2016, creating a scenic cycleway the length of Queen Elizabeth Park.
Following the gentle rise and fall of its dunes, Te Ara o Whareroa connects kids to schools, commuters safely to stations and suburbs and recreational riders to the peace of the park.
It’s popularity is already growing, and for good reason. Why not take the opportunity to check Te Ara o Whareroa out yourself?

Fat Bike fun riding the Northern Loop - Queen Elizabeth Park, Kapiti Coast NZ
Fat Bike fun riding the Northern Loop - Queen Elizabeth Park, Kapiti Coast NZ
With the New Zealand Winter well and truly settling, finding time to hit the trails are few and far between. Thankfully there was a gap in the weather for one afternoon ride last weekend and I seized the opportunity to finish off the Northern Coastal track at Queen Elizabeth Park.
The Northern Loop follows the coastal track to Raumati then comes back via Te Ara o Whareroa (the inland link track) back to Queen Elizabeth Park. However, on this occasion, I took advantage of the fat bike and looped back via the beach.
Like the Southern Loop, its Northern companion is a multi-purpose track which is well used by dog walkers, runners and other cyclists. Although today kept all but the very keen indoors.
A fun trail best done as one super loop (North and South) and a good one to do with company. If you visit on a fine day, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of both Kapiti and the South Island and you always have the beach option back if the weather and tides permit. Had a blast and will be back in the future once the weather clears up! ❤????

Another perfect day for a Phantom 2 Vision+ flight.
Red Tape, Whareroa Farm - Kapiti MTB Park
The other week we decided to sneak away from the children and go for a bike ride. Knowing a new track has opened up on Whareroa Farm; Red Tape, we thought we'd give it a shot.
It was a day to go 'meh...', nothing unusual for Wellington at the moment; overcast, a bit windy, nothing special. Which made heading off for a ride through some bushland quite a compelling prospect.
What made it all the more compelling and interesting was our intention to film as we go, on the Go Pro. Despite venturing out on lots of different trails and tracks around greater Wellington, we usually forget to capture the ride to share with our followers and also to look back on from time to time. Not this time. We were organised.
And although the getting there through farmland and part way by a 4WD track, once we reached Red Tape, the real adventure began. Tight little twists and turns, some short and sweet downhills, native bush, short bridges, cliff side expanses, jumps and bumps - lots of fun.
We were pretty excited to check out the footage. We got back to the van, unloaded and decided to check it out pretty much straight away. We fast forwarded all of the farmland and 4WD track to get to the Red Tape part - awesome work Ange and Simon - right on cue as we turned in to the track - the battery went flat. Fantastic effort.
Anyway, the video isn't very exciting but the ride definitely is. Worth a look next time you're up Kapiti way.

Running the Southern Coastal Loop on the Electric Fat Bike - Queen Elizabeth Park, Paekakariki NZ
Last time I was here, the bike was not electric and I was still pedaling frantically to get trails done as quickly as possible (in many cases, to beat the rain). However, we got some good weather today and there were a few new things I wanted to try out, which included recording the trails in 4K.
Although the Go Pro had no problems recording in 4K, my 5 year old PC had problems processing the file sizes and this resulted in me downgrading them to 1080p (what you see here). I definitely think there is value moving to 4K especially in a country like New Zealand, where trails and natural wonders are everywhere.
I also decided to take a new direction and show the whole trail not just a jump-cut video timed to music, which I have done previously. Removing the background music and the associated cuts means I can produce videos quicker and show the trail in its entirety. I've also added some comments about the trail, my bike and the ride as I go along so you get to know me a little better.
This is the first run on the Southern Loop since I went electric and suffice to say, I smashed all my personal bests on Strava by almost half (yes I know bike and e-bike times are recorded separately on Strava) but when you cut times by almost a half, you have to be impressed.
I am always looking to up my game and have got more gear coming to make my videos even more compelling and engaging but I would love your feedback on this. Please comment below - I look forward to reading your thoughts!
