New Zealand village 'erupts' as 30m geyser blasts from lake.
A New Zealand woman watched a lake near her North Island road spectacularly erupt overnight, blasting a geyser of water some 30m in the air.
Lani Kereopa says she heard a big thump and spraying sound afterwards emitting from Lake Rotorua about 4am, and after rushing outside decided to wake the rest of the residents of Ohinemutu.
Twenty five metres from my house a geyser was erupting out of the lake, Ms Kereopa told the New Zealand Herald.
I panicked and ran downstairs to wake everyone up to say get out of the house, the village is erupting.
She and her family made their way to higher ground, but according to Rotorua's Lakes Council geothermal expert Peter Brownbridge, the phenomenon presents no danger to the community.
It must have been quite powerful to throw up a big column of water as it did but it's nothing for people to be concerned about, he said.
We don't see many bigger ones these days although eruptions like this were quite common about eight years ago, he said, explaining that the eruption was simply a release of pressure akin to the cap being blown off a soft drink.
They blow when the upwards pressure exceeds the capping weight so it can be quite spectacular, as we've seen this morning.
