Sandboarding a Giant Sand Dune in New Zealand
It was a windy day when I went sand boarding on the Te Paki Sand Dunes in New Zealand. This is a #NZmustDO experience just to say you did it, and it's sort-of free, so why not.
Our tour guides said we'd do a practice run on the short dune, but at the last minute they said, Nah, let's just all go for the big hill. I thought surely they meant we'd go only part way up the big hill. Halfway up, the last of us paused and agreed, This looks plenty high enough right here. But noooooo, they hiked us allllllll the way to the peak, where the constant strong winds were trying to rip the board out of our fingers and blast our legs with sand if not for the body shield of a board we held. The top of the dune was a sharp ridge with a steep backside and a constant flow of sand and wind, just like a dramatic Sahara desert movie scene. Looking downhill looked like my first black diamond ski run. But it turned out it was easy to go slow by dragging your toes. Later, guides said they'd never had an entire bus of people do the big dune for their first run. LOL
They said some guy holding a GoPro once messed up his face on the way down, so we weren't allowed to take our cameras down the hill. Hence why I'm filming other people from the bottom, after I went down once.

Arguably the best way to see Cape Reinga and the Ninety Mile Beach is to take a day-trip with one of the companies which run four-wheel drive bus tours, e.g. from Kaitaia (best not to drive the beach without local knowledge). This video was taken on one such tour (apart from the last few frames of Ahipara).

Rawene to Whatuwhiwhi via Kohukohu, Herekino, Ahipara, Kaitaia, Pukenui, Cape Reinga, Karikari Peninsula.
Note: I now run the bike with a Givi Screen mounted on Madstad Brackets and I use Bar End Mirrors. This has fixed pretty much all wind and buffeting issues and stops the bike getting thrown around too much in the wind, also it keeps you out of direct rain :-)
