Pa's Nature Walk and The Cross Island Trek -
Fit or not all of us made it to the top of The Needle (Te Rua Manga) with Pa - our guide, it was very challenging on the legs indeed. We hiked up from the northern end of Avatiu, ending at Wigmore's Waterfall on the southern side of the island.
Trail Hike in Rarotonga, Cook Islands |
Hiking Te Rua Manga also known as the needle in Cook Islands. It's a beautiful hike up a steep and long trail.
The Needle is moderately challenging, it can take someone 3-4 hours to complete. The needle is a Cross-Island Track, you can hike from one side to the other or you can go up and come down the same way. You also have two different entrance points, however we recommend entering from the north as it’s easier and more commonly used. Make sure you wear shoes for this hike and bring plenty of drinking water at least 1 litre per person. You may want to consider wearing a long sleep shirt and pants and bringing mosquito repellant.
The hike is fairly steep and requires you to use your hands and feet at times. The most difficult section is the final climb at the peak, there is a series of ropes and chains that you need to use to reach the final view point.
The view from the top of Te Rua Manga also known as The Needle is amazing. You have a 270 degree view of Rarotonga.
We do not recommend doing this hike if it’s rained the day before, we also don’t recommend doing it if it’s going to rain or if it is raining. Even with perfect conditions, the hike is slippery and challenging.
With that being said, we had a ton of fun and we would do this hike again. It was a little bit windy at the top and a little scary. There weren’t a ton of people doing the hike, it as actually quite peaceful.

Hiking the Needle - Rarotonga April 2018
Back in April this year Gabby (my wife) and I went to Rarotonga, Cook Islands for ours friends Georgia and Jame's wedding. While there we decided to take on the Cross Island Walk up to The Needle. It was hot, sticky, hard sweaty work but the view and the adventure was worth it. Here is our adventure, enjoy it and maybe one day you can go do the walk yourselves.
Passing through impressive natural scenery, the three- to four-hour hike from the north to south coasts via the 413m Te Rua Manga (Needle) is Rarotonga's most popular walk.

Across the island trek to the Needle - Rarotonga, Cook Islands
The Needle (Te Rua Manga 413 m) is the male energy point on the island. The Dalai Lama blessed the Needle when he named it one of the eight energy points in the world.
Pa Teuruaa nephew Bruce does the cross-island trek since Pa stopped hiking in 2016.
Remember to take a good hiking shoes, especially during the wet season. Must have also a mosquito repellent.

Cook Islands Holiday Guide - Cross Island Trek July 2015
The Cross Island Walk takes roughly about 3 and a half hours to complete, but can take longer when taking photo's or video. You need comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and mosquito reppelant or even better for the mozzies we use coconut oil.
Take your time, especially with young ones, SAFETY is number ONE priority.
It is recommended to walk the cross island trek from the north side, in Avatiu. But some have decided to stop at the Sheraton site in Vaimaanga and walk up the road that leads to Wigmore's Waterfall. That's fine except there aren't many proper markings in place, just remember that.
I wanted to find out though how easy it was to get side tracked walking from the south, even walking from the north-side can present it's own problems. And the triangle markings, my assistant reckons when walking from the north is too far apart. We use these markings walking from the south.
Made it all the way up to Te Rua Manga, awesome view.
Lot's of creeks to cross, the water is fresh higher up the mountain. Lot's of vegetation, old trees, and wild chooks well maybe not but they were really tame.
(This is only a short video - the full length video is waiting for an aerial view to be installed before it is uploaded)
My assistant by the way is Lasse from Germany

Cross Island Track - Rarotonga 2016
This film shows a trek north to south across the middle of the beautiful Rarotonga, The Cook Islands. The trek starts near the main town of Avarua and heads south to the high point of Te Rua Manga - The Needle (413m) before descending to the southern beaches. A leisurely 3hrs gets you across and it is well worth doing, a very cool little trip. We rode scooters to the end, caught the clockwise bus to the start to set up the trip.
350 Cook Islands part 2
350
On 24th October 2009 over 120 countries around the world came together with a message for world leaders.
350 Cook Islands organised a walk to Te Rua Manga (The Needle), one of the highest points on Rarotonga 416m above sea level. The walk itself is not for the faint hearted, 85% is uphill and very steep in some places. The courage and effort shown by the people taking part shows how passionate they are to this very important world issue. Pa Teuruaa from Pa's Mountain Treks guided the group of all ages, including people from NGO's, CBO's, government departments, Miss Cook Islands and crew members from the visiting Greenpeace boat MV Esperanza, as they carried up a protest banner with 350 Cook Islands printed on it with 350 meaning the safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere. The aim was to create an awareness about agreeing to an internationally binding climate treaty. This is needed to slow down climate change.

Raemaru Track Hike | Arorangi, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
This is the end of the hike where you have to scale a cliff side to reach the top. The views are still impressive before scaling the hillside, but even better from the top. You experience a panorama view of the forest and coast line.
The Needle via the Cross Island Trek, Cook Islands
Te Rua Manga (The Needle), can been seen from several spots on the island of Rarotonga. Hikers will navigate tree roots, steep terrain and humidity, of which all are well earned once you reach the top and take in the incredible 360 views.
