The first night we spend in an amazing bungalow in Kurunegala:
The second night we stayed in a guesthouse in Anuradhapura.

The Sri Lankan civil war between the Singhalese government and the Tamil Tigers is officially recognised as starting in 1983 ( but has its roots going back to british colonial times, with Tamils (natives of India brought to Sri Lanka to work on tea plantations) generally taking poorly paid, menial, servant or labouring jobs and being systemically treated as second class, with no access to the same health and education services the Singhalese population enjoyed. The war was over very badly (it was a real genocide) in 2009, with atrocities by both the Tigers and the Government. More detailed information can be found on the Internet, but the important thing to know is that while the Tigers were Tamil, all Tamil people are not Tigers. The Tigers were a guerilla army fighting for sovereignty and freedom but it is not necessarily true that what they fought for and how they did this was supported by all Tamil people. The same goes for the way the government ended the war - most Sri Lankans wanted the war over, but not through atrocity and genocide.
Arugam Bay territory, where I live now, was not totally controlled by the Tamil Tigers of Eelam, but it is a Tamil area, where the tourism continued right through the war - apparently the Tigers weren't based there as such, just moved through this region. The state did not help a lot to restore the area after the tsunami. Majority of redevelopment has been privately facilitated. People have built their homes on their own and developed the local tourism sector. That is why this area of Sri Lanka is yet untouched by huge hotels.
At the beginning of this summer the population of Arugam Bay who own houses and guest-houses on the ocean front recieved government papers notifying that they are obliged to release any part of their property infringing on a new 10m buffer zone, measured from what the government considered the first vegetation.
Today (9/28/2011) in the morning a bulldozer came and began to smash buildings without offering any compensation to local people (video attached). Demolition of 10 meters was a government-determined action as a measure against a tsunami. That 10 meters of now-demolished structures, which brings the local community 21 million rupees income in the high season and provides a great many jobs, is proposed to somehow protect the rest of the population.
Why am I talking about the continuation of the attacks against Tamil people? In the attachment you will find pictures of Hikkaduwa, a village situated in Singalese territory, which is standing practically on the water, but at high tide the water comes right into cafes and hotels. Instead of starting with these areas already affected by water, the government decided to demolish the buildings in the Tamil territory, where even in a high tide people still have at least 10-15 meters from any contraction to the water. It is the same in Unawatunna, another tourist town where beachfront tourism property owned largely by people from Colombo and overseas is daily inundated by water. But this is not just about racism, this is about prioritising people with money over those without. It is about Sri Lanka's focus on helping those with money make more, instead of supporting poor people to access income and the basics of a quality life that we in the West take for granted.
I beg you not to tell from whom you have received this information. Just send out it to friends, journalists and send it to UNESCO. It is very important.
Ceylon Holidays CMB - Adventure Tours
Ceylon Holidays CMB offers, wildlife, nature adventure tours all around Sri Lanka. We offer Nature and Adventure trekking, Caving Mountain Biking and Cycling, Hot air Ballooning, Nature Weddings & Honeymoon Tour Packages.
Sea Sports
With more than 13,000 km of coastline, warm 28-degree water and marine life is a great location for all aquatic activities. Many famous beaches benefit safe sea sports but not in monsoon winds.
Hikkaduwa, Tangalle on the west coast, Unawatuna on the south coast and Nilaveli on the east coast are all wonderful places for scuba diving and snorkeling. The south west coast of Sri Lanka is open to the same regular, long distance swells as Indonesia, making it an ideal choice for surfing. Sport fishing is relatively undeveloped, but 1,140 miles of shoreline and warm Indian Ocean currents ensure there is a plethora of fish in the sea, estuaries, mangrove lagoons and rivers.
White Water River Rafting and Canoeing
Some rivers originate from hills offer excellent fresh water sport facilities such as Kalani, Mahawalli, Kalu etc. For example Kelani River in Kitulgala is very popular among adventurers for white water rafting. Madu Ganga in the south for motorboat safari. Popular sites for canoeing are Sorabora lake Mahiyangana in the east, Kalu Ganga River (Black River) and the Kelani Ganga River in the southwest. Canoeing is also possible in ancient man made lakes, large reservoirs, lagoons and rivers that run swiftly down to sea.
Wild Life Jeep Safari
Before plantation era the island covered more than 70 per cent of forest cover but now only 20 per cent. That is national parks, forest reserves, and sanctuaries etc. The distribution of wildlife is mainly in national parks. There are seventeen national parks of Sri Lanka and more than 4000 elephants in the country. There are two national parks to see leopards, Willpattu in northwest and Yala in southeast arid zones. Minneriya, Udawalawa and Wasgamuwa are the best places to visit wild elephants. Maduru Oya national park will be open for visitors in near future with extra values like Vadda village and hot water springs.
Caving and Pot Holing
Sri Lanka is under developed as a caving region. This fascinating activity is becoming popular. About 45 main caves have being reported. Most of which seems to be formed in granite or gneiss. It is consist with just one or two chambers that were commonly used as dwellings in prehistoric times. Usually ash and shells are found there because snail cocking of prehistoric humans. There are number of limestone pot holes are around Kandy in the central and all around Sri Lanka for pot holing. Some of them are with stalagmite and stalactite, underground water ponds, waterfalls, and some distance long. The cave fauna is consisting with large spices of bats, geckos, frogs etc. Nightlife is not mysterious if you interested.
Night Jungle Walks
Camping is the best way of alternative accommodation with memorable experiences like knight walks in the forests, terrace rice fields, lake bunts gives you an amazing experience of night animals.
Travelling through Sri Lanka from Columbo to Hikkaduwa
Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life
We travelled across Sri Lanka by bus, tuk tuk, train and mini van to see all the sites and taste all the flavours of a beautiful Asian country. Stopping off at all the major travel destinations and getting into the local sights and sounds. This holiday was jam packed with tea tasting, turtle sanctuaries, elephant orphanages, beach sunsets, jungle rides, temples, a light festival, botanical gardens, dried fish markets, cathedrals, herbal medicine walks and we even got to wash an elephant!

Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and tea plantations. While visiting the island, you’ll see colonial architecture from the days when the Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled. You’ll also see lots of elephants, some of which participate in local festivals and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a leopard or two at a wildlife sanctuary. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka in drive to boost tourism in Passekudaah Bay
After a decades-long civil war the Sri Lankan government is aiming to develop its tourism industry as its economy expands.
Because of its pristine beaches and an extraordinarily calm sea, the government has designated Passekudah Bay as a special tourism development zone.
The government has allocated leases for luxury hotels to build 800 hotel rooms as part of a drive to bring 2.5 million tourists by 2016.
But as Charles Haviland reports, some critics say the development is happening too fast.
