The Teatro Regio is a prominent opera house and opera company in Turin, Piedmont, Italy. Its season runs from October to June with the presentation of eight or nine operas given from five to twelve performances of each.
Several buildings provided venues for operatic productions in Turin from the mid-16th century, but it was not until 1713 that a proper opera house was considered, and under the architect Filippo Juvarra planning began. However, the cornerstone was not laid until the reign of Charles Emmanuel III in 1738 after Juvarra's death. The work was supervised by Benedetto Alfieri until the theatre was completed.
The Teatro Regio (Royal Theatre) was inaugurated on 26 December 1740 with Francesco Feo's Arsace. It was a sumptuously built facility, seating 1,500 and with 139 boxes located on five tiers plus a gallery.
Following the fire, a national competition was launched to find an architect. However, due to the war and the overall financial situation, the foundation stone was laid on 25 September 1963. Even then, work did not start until September 1967 under architect Carlo Mollino.
The rebuilt theatre, with its striking contemporary interior design but hidden behind the original facade, was inaugurated on 10 April 1973 with a production of Verdi's I vespri siciliani directed by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano.
The building's outer facade is made from brick with a unique brickwork pattern using custom cut bricks to create a relief of stars which seems to overlap its self continuously like the scales of a fish. This is an illusion created by the uniquely designed masonry pattern as the wall is actually straight. The shadows created by the protruding parts enforce this illusion and the complex pattern reinforces this illusion.

Mercoledì 12 ottobre, alle ore 20, il Regio inaugura la Stagione 2016-2017 con La bohème di Giacomo Puccini. Gianandrea Noseda, sul podio dell’Orchestra e del Coro del Teatro Regio, affronta la ricca partitura di Puccini, in un nuovo allestimento firmato da Àlex Ollé, regista de La Fura dels Baus.
L’Orchestra e il Coro del Teatro sono diretti da Gianandrea Noseda, attento interprete dei capolavori creati da Puccini, per il quale «La bohème è un’opera difficilissima, pochi altri titoli del melodramma italiano hanno questa complessità. È una partitura lavorata in filigrana che mette in moto un perfetto meccanismo teatrale, perseguito con acume, ma delicatissimo. È un’opera che definirei “modernista”, piuttosto che tradizionalista; utilizza di fatto un linguaggio profondamente novecentesco, con una velocità teatrale ed emotiva serrata».
Àlex Ollé, uno dei direttori artistici e regista de La Fura dels Baus – il dirompente collettivo teatrale che ha segnato una svolta nella storia della regia del teatro d’opera – mette in scena per la prima volta La bohème. Secondo il regista catalano: «La bohème è un’opera nella quale i più giovani si sbarazzano di tutto ciò che impedisce loro di volare e si alimentano solo della propria vitalità; la vera fame dei protagonisti è una fame di vita. La mia Bohème è ambientata in una periferia contemporanea, è lì che secondo me si trova la matrice intellettuale del futuro; quei luoghi malfamati e poveri non sono gradevoli, però sono autentici. In questa ambientazione, la vita e l’arte, così come succedeva nel Romanticismo, appartengono ai superstiti».

On Wednesday 12th October at 20:00, the Regio inaugurates the new Opera Season 2016-2017 with La bohème by Giacomo Puccini. Gianandrea Noseda, conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Regio, tackles Puccini’s rich score, in a new staging by Àlex Ollé, the director of La Fura dels Baus.
The attentive interpreter of the masterpieces created by Puccini, Gianandrea Noseda, conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro. Noseda affirms: “La bohème is a difficult opera; few other titles of Italian opera have its complexity. The opera has a score worked in minute detail that sets in motion a perfect theatrical mechanism, insightful, yet very delicate. It is an opera that I would call “modern”, rather than traditional; it in fact uses a twentieth century language, with theatrical and emotional speed”. Àlex Ollé, one of the artistic directors of La Fura dels Baus - the most innovative theatre company that created a turning point in the history of the opera - sets the scene for La bohème for the first time. According to the Catalan director, “La bohème is an opera that allows the young generation to get rid of everything that prevents them from flying, feeding only on their own vitality; the real hunger of the protagonists is the hunger for life. My Bohème is set in a modern city outskirt, it is there where, in my opinion, the intellectual matrix of the future happens; in ugly, disreputable and poor places, but authentic. In this kind of environment, life and art, as well as they did in the Romanticism, belong to the survivors”.

On the 5th August at Expo Shanghai there will be a Gala dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi, an emblem of Italian culture.
The Teatro Regio will be touring Japan and China in the summer - a theatre loved by the public and artists all over the world. It will be the only Italian opera theatre being represented in Shanghai.

Il Teatro Regio di Torino è il teatro lirico della città di Torino, nonché uno dei più grandi ed importanti d'Italia, ed uno dei teatri italiani più rilevanti nel panorama europeo ed internazionale. Costruito nel 1740, è stato distrutto da un incendio nel 1936 e ricostruito nel 1973; della costruzione originale rimane la facciata, attualmente parte del sito seriale UNESCO Residenze Sabaude iscritto alla Lista del Patrimonio dell'Umanità dal 1997. Proprio nella facciata patrimonio dell'Umanità esponiamo i titoli delle varie Stagioni, anno dopo anno.

Right on the façade, named Heritage of Humanity, we exhibit the titles of the various opera Seasons, year after year.
Esclarmonde - Jules Massenet - Italian premiere (Teatro Regio di Torino 1992)
Esclarmonde è un'opera in quattro atti, con prologo e epilogo di Jules Massenet, con un libretto francese di Alfred Blau e Louis de Gramont. La prima ha avuto luogo a l'Opéra Comique a Parigi il 14 maggio, 1889.
L'imperatore Phorcas abdica il trono a sua figlia Esclarmonde. Lei ha acquisito poteri magiche e per mantenerle deve velarsi fino al compimento dei vent'anni. Piange il suo amore per Roland, un cavaliere ed il conte di Blois. A seguito di un suggerimento dalla sua sorella, Parséis, Esclarmonde usa la magia per portare Roland su un isola per sedurlo. Quando Roland confessa suo amore al Vescovo di Blois, lui effettua un exorcismo su Esclarmonde. Phorcas insiste che la figlia rinuncia a Roland sulla minaccia della sua esecuzione. C'è allora un torneo per assegnare la mano di Esclarmonde al vincitore. Quando viene chiesto al vincitore il suo nome, risponde, la disperazione e rifiuta la mano di Esclarmonde. Esclarmonde riconosce immediatamente la voce, e quando il suo velo è alzato lui la riconosce pure e tutti festeggiano.

We will be the guests of honour of the 44th Hong Kong Arts Festival, the most important festival of the Far East. We have a week within the festival in which we will present the opera Simon Boccanegra and three concerts. This comprehensive program from a varied musical style, from Verdi to Shostakovich, through Wagner and Prokofiev, is to present the ductility and the undisputed level of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Regio.

E' nostra intenzione valorizzare e far conoscere questa collezione proponendo mostre temporanee tematiche con l'intenzione di creare un museo dedicato al teatro di figura.
Dopo l'importante esposizione nel Foyer del Teatro Regio sulle opere liriche per marionette e la presenza al Salone del Libro nello Stand del Consiglio Regionale del Piemonte le preziose marionette della collezione Augusto Grilli sono nuovamente disponibili per mostre ed esposizioni.
La collezione Marionette Grilli è composta di circa 10.000 pezzi databili dal '700 ai giorni nostri e provenienti da diversi paesi nel mondo. Riunisce i materiali raccolti dagli anni 40 ad oggi da Augusto Grilli, egli stesso marionettista e profondo conoscitore del teatro di figura.

La collezione di marionette di Augusto Grilli è una raccolta all'insegna della passione: una raccolta eterogenea, stratificata, ritrovamento dopo ritrovamento per dar vita a un mosaico composito.
Ogni marionetta, ogni fondale, ogni costume racchiude una scheggia di storia che attende di essere ricostruita.
E non si tratta solo di storia dello spettacolo, di una pagina di eccellenza del nostro teatro, perché le marionette sono specchio di un'epoca e di una società, raccontando la storia -- quella con la esse maiuscola -- in presa diretta, quando non è ancora entrata nei libri, ma è solo cronaca.
Ma quest'esposizione, data la prestigiosa sede che la ospita, preferisce giocare con il teatro, con quella nobile competizione che, soprattutto nell'Ottocento, vede melodramma e marionette rincorrere e spartirsi il grande repertorio. Come dimenticare che furono proprio le marionette -- le gloriose marionette Lupi -- a rappresentare per la prima volta l'Aida a Torino, bruciano sul tempo lo stesso Teatro Regio che dovrà poi attendere ben due anni prima di riportare in città il capolavoro verdiano?
Ecco allora uscire dalla collezione Grilli i personaggi per La Bohème, per L'elisir d'amore, per Il barbiere di Siviglia, per Aida e per tante altre opere, in un gioco di rimandi dove il piccolo si confonde con il grande... (e non è dato sapere chi sia veramente il piccolo e chi veramente il grande).
