Cairns Council has created a Zhanjiang Friendship Garden at Freshwater Lakes in the Cairns Botanic Garden precinct, to celebrate the Sister Cities relationship between Cairns and the Chinese city of Zhanjiang.
The Chinese-style garden, which celebrates the cultural heritage of the Cairns region, was officially opened on 21 November 2015.
Situated on the banks of Freshwater Lake, within the Centenary Lakes precinct at Edge Hill, the garden incorporates traditional features in a contemporary style. It pays homage to the unique friendship that is maintained between the cities of Zhanjiang and Cairns.
The entry pillars announce “arrival” and are adorned with graphic motifs of traditional cloud patters of Zhanjiang. Boulders of Chillagoe marble acknowledge the importance of rocks and mountains in Chinese garden culture.
A Moon Gate is inscribed with the words “Friendship Garden” and carved granite dogs at the entrance to the Pavilion are representative of the ancient dog sculptures unique to Zhanjiang.
Designers consulted the Sister Cities Advisory Committee, the Consul-General to Mayor Wang Zhongbing, the Zhanjiang Urban Management Bureau, the Cairns and District Chinese Association and the Friends of the Botanic Gardens in preparing the brief.
The style of the garden has been influenced by the designers' involvement with the Sino Australian Friendship Garden at Zhanjiang China, Cairns' Sister City – a 37ha contemporary style garden with modern Chinese elements that were in turn influenced by an existing 500 year old light house, a modern harbour bridge and an interest to fuse local Cairns cultural icons into the end result – a symbolic gesture that supported the 'friendship' between the two cities.
The Centenary Lakes are connected to the Flecker Botanic Gardens by a low lying boardwalk through a pristine swamp forest and melaleuca wetlands.
The Freshwater Lake here has birds, turtles and many waterlilies and the gardens here have a picnic pavilion and facilities making it the perfect spot for a family picnic.
There is also a Saltwater Lake on the other eastern side of the park where you can see mangrove habitats including mud skippers, crabs, saltwater fish and mangrove birds.
You can walk from this side of the Centenary Lakes along the timber boardwalk to the Flecker Botanical Gardens.

U.S. naval exercise to coincide with China-Russia joint drill in South China Sea
중-러 남중국해 합동훈련에 맞서 미국도 해상훈련 실시
The world's most powerful navies -- the United States, Russia and China are set to begin large-scale exercises in Asia starting Monday.
China and Russia will hold their joint maneuvers in the South China Sea, while the U.S. drill will take place near Guam in the western Pacific.
China has called the drill with Russia a routine exercise to deepen military cooperation.
All three powers have made a point to steer clear of each other, but analysts say there are clear undertones of countering the influence of the United States in the region where Beijing has territorial disputes with its neighbors.
According to China's defense ministry, the exercise will include among other activities.... island taking.
U.S. drill, named Valiant Shield will involve 180 aircraft and some 18-thousand personnel, led by the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, based out of Japan.

City tour of Zhanjiang city with Harry
Zhanjiang City, China
Anpo Village Hung Kuen, Hainan Island
Anpo village Hong Quan
The martial arts of Anpo village trace their origins back to the Reign of Ming Taizu emperor Hongwu.
In the year 1397 Chen Bei passed the provincial military exams and was made an officer. In 1407 in the reign of emperor Yongle he was promoted to the rank of General and sent to oversee the army in Huizhou prefecture. In the year 1417 he was officially sent into exile to Meiluo village , Gangbei Township, Wanning prefecture, Hainan Island.
There he passed down his martial arts to his descendants. A few generations the family moved to Anpo village , Zhenan township, in Wanning prefecture, founding the martial tradition still practiced there today.
The people of Anpo village call their martial arts Hong Quan in memory of their claimed descent from the martial arts practiced by the soldiers under Ming Taizu emperor Hongwu.

Hainan Island has a long history of martial arts and warfare.
The original inhabitants of Hainan are the Li ethnic group.
During the early Han dynasty an invasion force was sent to occupy the island. Since that time it has been used as a place of exile.
Many of the Hainan people trace the origins of their martial traditions to the many military generals who have been sent into exile there over the past 2000+ years.
Today several ethnic groups live on Hainan including Han, Li and Miao who descend from Miao mercenaries from Guizhou sent there during the Qing dynasty to put down the rebellions of the native Li people.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries many people from Hainan went to Southeast Asia to work in the overseas Chinese communities. Some of them brought their native Hainan martial arts and became quite famous for their skills.
There are still schools teaching boxing methods from Hainan found in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia.
In Southeast Asia they are generally referred to as Qiong Pai Nanquan (Qiong being an ancient name for Hainan Island).
Today there remains quite a few village and family styles of martial arts being practiced on Hainan Island.
The Hainan government has begun to register a number of villages where there are still a large number of people practicing unique local systems as official martial arts villages.
Besides the local systems a number of mainland styles were also brought there in the early and mid 20th century which have established large followings on the Island. Particularly Choy Lay Fut and Zhanjiang Hong Gar systems..
