Middleton-in-Teesdale is a small market town in County Durham, in England. It is situated on the north side of Teesdale between Eggleston and Newbiggin, a few miles to the north-west of Barnard Castle. The settlement is surrounded by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Middleton is administered by Durham County Council. It is part of the Bishop Auckland parliamentary constituency, which has been represented in parliament by Helen Goodman (Labour Party) since 2005. It is in the North East England region, which serves as a constituency for the European Parliament. The local police force is Durham Constabulary.
The small market town in Upper Teesdale expanded in the early 19th century when the London Lead Company moved its northern headquarters there from Blanchland in Northumberland. Much of the architecture from its days as a company town is still clearly visible. This includes Middleton House, formerly the headquarters of the company, the school (which is now an outdoor centre) and some company houses.
A fountain was erected in the town in 1877 to honour Robert Walton Bainbridge, superintendent of the London Lead Mining Company. Middleton served as the terminus of a railway line from Barnard Castle until this was closed as part of the Beeching Axe. Middleton also has links to the early Co-operative Society and may pre-date the Rochdale Pioneers. There are also many early Methodist chapels.
On 20 June 1939, a British American Air Services De Havilland Dragon Rapide (Registration:G-AERE) flying from Heston Aerodrome to Newcastle Airport crashed at Forest-in-Teesdale near Middleton-in-Teesdale. The weather was bad and the aircraft was flying low. The accident killed all three passengers and crew on board.
Middleton is on the Pennine Way about 9 miles from High Force. Dominating the moors to the south side of the village is the Scots-Pine-covered tumulus of Kirkcarrion, one of Teesdale's major Bronze Age burial sites.

Upper Teesdale - Valley of the Ice Flowers
This is a short taster video using some of the footage I made during the spring and early summer. This area of upper Teesdale has been scientifically classified as a sub arctic region and is recognised worldwide as a European and Global Geopark. All of the footage has been taken from the upper Tees valley, from Bowlees upstream along the Pennine Way and Green Trod to The Widdybank Fell Nature Reserve. The valley of the Ice Flowers refers to the rare plants that have grown in this valley since the end of the last ice age. . As it is only a taster I have only included a few plants such as the Spring Gentian, Mountain Pansy and Globe Flower. I have also added a few of our more common plants such as Betony, Bluebell and Celandine.

High Cup Nick (Via Great Rundale Tarn), North Pennines - 16 October 2011
A 10½ mile circular walk from Dufton to High Cup Nick via Great Rundale Tarn in the North Pennines.
The start is the village of Dufton (Grid ref. NY689249) a few miles north along a minor road from the A66 at Appleby-in-Westmoreland. Exit the car park and walk back towards Appleby (south) following the road around to the left. Where the lane turns right walk straight ahead along a lane. Keep to the right where the track divides (Grid ref. NY 691 252) and with improving views ahead climb steadily with conically shaped Dufton Pike to your left. Having reached a col due east of Dufton Pike the track descends slightly before entering a deep steep sided valley where evidence of former mine working can be seen. The track continues to climb towards a shooting cabin. From here the northern shore of Great Runsdale Tarn is just over a hundred metres south.
Turn left along the shore and locate the outflow. This is Tarn Sike and needs to be followed downstream for approximately 2.5 km where it becomes Maize Beck. The section from Great Runsdale Tarn to the bridge on the Pennine Way over Maize Beck could be very wet underfoot after rain with an added risk of flash floods. Care is therefore needed. Despite this warning, crossing this desolate moorland is easy from a navigational point of view provided you do not stray from the beck. There is a faint path and it will probably be fairly damp underfoot so be prepared for some bog trotting as my friend Cally found out!
Reaching a footbridge over Maize Beck means that you have reached the Pennine Way. Turn right (southwest) to follow this National Trail, which is marked by posts, across a limestone pavement to reach spectacular High Cup Nick. This is where the Whin Sill, which is formed of blue-grey dolerite, has provided extra resistance to glaciers and formed one of the most spectacular natural features in the UK. After spending some time taking in the view, follow the wide path along the northern rim. This is again the Pennine Way and is followed all the way back to Dufton. On reaching the road through the village, turn right and follow it back to the start. Music by Depeche Mode -- Walking In My Shoes, Kings of Leon -- Sex On Fire & The Stone Roses -- Made of Stone
