The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California.
One of the engineering feats of its day, the Loop was built by Southern Pacific Railroad to ease the grade over Tehachapi Pass. Construction began in 1874, and the line opened in 1876. Contributors to the project's construction include Arthur De Wint Foote and the project's chief engineer, William Hood.
Rising at a steady 2% grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation in the Loop. A train more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long passes over itself going around the loop.”

Tehachapi Loop - Tehachapi California - One Of The Seven Wonders Of The Railroad World
The Tehachapi Loop is a 28 mile long railroad main line through the Tehachapi Pass, in south central California. The loop derives its name from the circuitous route it takes, in which the track passes over itself, a design which lessens the angle of the grade. A train more than 4,000 feet long (about 85 boxcars) will pass over itself going around the loop. In 1998 it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The railroad line connects Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Antelope Valley. Hailed as one of the greatest engineering feats of its day (ca. 1876) as well as being the world's busiest single-track main, the line was built by Southern Pacific Railroad. It is now owned by Union Pacific. BNSF also uses the loop under a trackage rights agreement.
The area is considered to be one of the prime railfan areas in the country with its combination of frequent train traffic and spectacular scenery. A railroad museum with many historical rail artifacts is located in the small nearby city of Tehachapi.

Tehachapi CA, Life style Test
Welcome to Tehachapi CA
I recently got the DJI Phantom 2 and I've decided to put it to work by trying to catch the amazing landscape that Tehachapi has to offer. I also used my canon 6D for some of the shots that consisted of not being in the air. This was filmed in Stallion Springs, Tehachapi Mt Park, Willow Springs back road, and Downtown Tehachapi. I hope you guys enjoy what this has to show. I enjoyed putting this together and be on the look out for more upcoming events i will be capturing.

Railroading on the Tehachapi: Exploring the Tunnels and Their History: Part 1
There were originally 17 tunnels on Southern Pacific's Tehachapi Pass. A line change in the 1930s necessitated the creation of one more before tunnel #1 so it became tunnel #1/2. Only 12 remain today and I thought I'd do a piece on them and some of the interesting history behind some of them.
Railroads have never been averse to punching tunnels through mountains and the Tehachapi was no exception. Most of the tunnels on the Mountain were under 500 feet in length but still make for some cool photo and video opportunities, two of them being at the top and bottom of the most famous piece of railroad in America and quite possibly, in the world; the Tehachapi Loop.
Some are right next to state Highway 58, some are remote and difficult to get to.
Because of my intimate knowledge of and problem free access to all these locations, I am able to take you to places you may never have been and some you likely never get to see and, I'll talk about the history surrounding many of them.
So, join me on a tour of the Tehachapi Tunnels!

Visit Tehachapi from the mid-60s to the mid-90s -- plus related regional locations such as Taylor Yard, Barstow Yard, Richmond Yard, Colton Crossing, Cajon Pass and the building of the SP Palmdale cutoff.
Learn the intertwined history of all the featured locations that are all part of the greater Tehachapi story. See all the great power and vanished scenes of pre-merger railroading at its best.
We trace the history of how, and why, two railroads used the same mountain pass and how the line was built. Don't miss the wonderful vintage views of how SP opened the Palmdale Cutoff to better access Tehachapi.
Our visit to neighboring Cajon Pass also brings lots of Santa Fe vintage freight action -- including a number of Passenger-Mail trains behind beautiful Warbonnet F7 and PA power.
Many diesels were tested by the SP over the years to work on the demanding Tehachapi line in both point, and especially helper service. Many failed to meet SP's expectations and we review those years in the 60s and 70s. See the demise of ALCO and the problems with early GE U-series diesels and how GE improved their products to eventually eclipse EMD in locomotive sales.
This is a giant slice of railroading, with history, maps, narration -- and most of all, wonderful trains.
These are scenes and visions that have all been swept away by the super-mergers (and laws effecting railfans) in 1995 and 1996. See how railroading was conducted before the work rules and equipment were all re-defined.
This video consists of 1-hour and 32-minutes of vintage Kodak movie film shot from 1957 to 1988 -- plus an additional 1-hour and 06-minutes shot on video in the early 1990s.
This is really two complete productions in one presentation.
All this is with great sound in stereo. Don't miss all the flying sand, vertical smoke, noise and powerful action that made these two railroads once standout as the most popular two out west.
Long trains traveling through the Tehachapi Loop
Located 35 miles southeast of Bakersfield, Calif. along state highway 58, the Tehachapi Loop is to rail movement what a canal lock is to river navigation: they both create elevation change quickly for exceptionally large conveyances. PS: efforts to stabilize this shaky footage shot on July 25, 2015 unfortunately skewed the framing--the footage is wavy and movement appears well out of the camera's action safe area. Sorry.

Tehachapi Loop Information:
The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Seeing a daily average of almost 40 trains, the line is one of the busiest single-track mainlines in the world.
With its frequent trains and spectacular scenery, the Loop is one of the prime railfan areas in the country. There's plenty of private property in the area, and trespassers are not welcome. A good (and safe) vantage point is the site of the Tehachapi Loop historical marker. In 1998, the Loop was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and is now California Historical Landmark #508.
One of the engineering feats of its day, the Loop was built by Southern Pacific Railroad beginning in 1874 and opened in 1876. Contributors to the project's construction include Arthur De Wint Foote and the project's chief engineer, William Hood.
On the loop, the track passes over itself, lessening the grade. The loop gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation as the track climbs at a steady 2% grade. A train more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long thus passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad worked from Bakersfield.
The siding on the loop was known as Walong after Southern Pacific District Roadmaster W. A. Long. Union Pacific RR constructed a second track between the east (south) end of Walong siding and the west (north) end of the Marcel siding, creating a 3.1 mile long section of two main tracks between MP 351.1 and MP 354.2.
A large white cross, The Cross at the Loop, stands atop the hill in the center of the loop in memory of two Southern Pacific Railroad employees killed on May 12, 1989, in a train derailment in San Bernardino, Calif.
The Loop became the property of the Union Pacific in 1996, when it absorbed the Southern Pacific. Trains of the BNSF Railway also use the loop under trackage rights. Union Pacific bars passenger trains from the line, which prevents Amtrak's San Joaquin train from serving Los Angeles. This has been the case since the creation of Amtrak in 1971. An exception is made for the Coast Starlight, which uses the line as a detour if its normal route is closed.

Following train through Tehachapi Loop
A very cool aerial view of a 4 engine 1.3 mile long BNSF train passing through the world famous Tehachapi Loop 25 miles outside of Bakersfield California.
I didn't add any music to this one, so you could hear the train rumbling and blowing its horn.
The idea came about when a Dynamic Soaring flying buddy from Brazil wanted to capture an interesting train video for his son back home who is a real train fan. Luckily we were in Bakersfield so the nearby Tehachapi loop was the obvious choice. Being an FPV pilot who's flown near trains before, I decided to fly my quad while he filmed from the ground. This was the 2nd train, after I'd figured out some of the best angles.
The loop is about 3/4 mile around, and from information in the video, and using Google Earth I can set the train's length at 1.3 miles. It took about 10 minutes from the moment I took off, for the train to clear the loop and disappear into the exit tunnel.
Might enjoy some of my other train and railroad related vids.
