Tehachapi Loop - Tehachapi California - One Of The Seven Wonders Of The Railroad World
The Tehachapi Loop is a 28 mile long railroad main line through the Tehachapi Pass, in south central California. The loop derives its name from the circuitous route it takes, in which the track passes over itself, a design which lessens the angle of the grade. A train more than 4,000 feet long (about 85 boxcars) will pass over itself going around the loop. In 1998 it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The railroad line connects Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Antelope Valley. Hailed as one of the greatest engineering feats of its day (ca. 1876) as well as being the world's busiest single-track main, the line was built by Southern Pacific Railroad. It is now owned by Union Pacific. BNSF also uses the loop under a trackage rights agreement.
The area is considered to be one of the prime railfan areas in the country with its combination of frequent train traffic and spectacular scenery. A railroad museum with many historical rail artifacts is located in the small nearby city of Tehachapi.

Trailer : Tehachapi Project - California - October 2019
In October 2019, JR created a one-of-a-kind art activation within the walls of California Correctional Institution: Tehachapi in Southern California - a maximum security 4 facility.
JR and his team captured the portraits and stories of former and currently incarcerated citizens that are keenly focused on rehabilitation, as well as some of the prison staff, and pasted them with their help, as a large team, on the recreation space within CCI.
The wheatpasting of 338 strips of paper was completed in a few hours thanks to the help of all the participants in the project, and more incarcerated men and staff, working together with JR’s team.
The final installation shot was done from a birds-eye view with a drone.
JR Mural app, available on the App Store, offer to meet et to hear these former and currently incarcerated men, as well as the prison staff who have participated in the project.

Visit Tehachapi from the mid-60s to the mid-90s -- plus related regional locations such as Taylor Yard, Barstow Yard, Richmond Yard, Colton Crossing, Cajon Pass and the building of the SP Palmdale cutoff.
Learn the intertwined history of all the featured locations that are all part of the greater Tehachapi story. See all the great power and vanished scenes of pre-merger railroading at its best.
We trace the history of how, and why, two railroads used the same mountain pass and how the line was built. Don't miss the wonderful vintage views of how SP opened the Palmdale Cutoff to better access Tehachapi.
Our visit to neighboring Cajon Pass also brings lots of Santa Fe vintage freight action -- including a number of Passenger-Mail trains behind beautiful Warbonnet F7 and PA power.
Many diesels were tested by the SP over the years to work on the demanding Tehachapi line in both point, and especially helper service. Many failed to meet SP's expectations and we review those years in the 60s and 70s. See the demise of ALCO and the problems with early GE U-series diesels and how GE improved their products to eventually eclipse EMD in locomotive sales.
This is a giant slice of railroading, with history, maps, narration -- and most of all, wonderful trains.
These are scenes and visions that have all been swept away by the super-mergers (and laws effecting railfans) in 1995 and 1996. See how railroading was conducted before the work rules and equipment were all re-defined.
This video consists of 1-hour and 32-minutes of vintage Kodak movie film shot from 1957 to 1988 -- plus an additional 1-hour and 06-minutes shot on video in the early 1990s.
This is really two complete productions in one presentation.
All this is with great sound in stereo. Don't miss all the flying sand, vertical smoke, noise and powerful action that made these two railroads once standout as the most popular two out west.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
Barstow is located on BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Barstow is fairly busy, both with BNSF traffic on their Southern Transcon, plus traffic of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). This is where BNSF's Needles Sub from the east becomes the Cajon Sub to the west.
The UP's Los Angeles Sub (the former Los Angeles & Salt Lake [LA&SL]) ties into the BNSF ex-Santa Fe east of Barstow at Daggett.
West of Barstow at Valley Junction, BNSF's Mojave Sub diverges towards Tehachapi Pass, and is another former Santa Fe route, that also sees a good deal of UP traffic.
The (default) east camera looks towards the crossovers (switches) at control point (CP) Barstow, which is a light-on-approach CP, i.e., the signals are dark until a train is within the adjacent/approach signal block(s).
There is an ATCS layout available, but with little to no server (data) coverage.
There is a radio stream available, focused on the line to the west (Hesperia/Upper Cajon):
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief stops in Barstow (BAR) twice daily: the eastbound #4 at 9:41 PM, and the westbound #3 at 3:45 AM (Pacific time zone).
The concrete pads you see are from when there were more platform tracks here at the station (Harvey House).

Tehachapi Railfanning With Amtrak Detours!!
On 9/14/19 I made my way up to what is probably my favorite rail line of all time. The Tehachapi pass is part of Union Pacific’s Mojave Subdivision. Not only is the line used by Union Pacific, the line is also used by several BNSF trains as well. This rail line is the busiest single track rail line in America. Serving approximately 45 freight trains every day.
Normally the traffic over Tehachapi is 100 percent freight. But about once a year Amtrak’s Coast Starlight uses this line when the normal Coast line is being worked on. That’s what happened here. I met up with Justin Trackside again, and had loads of fun. We visited several different well known locations on the line. Featured is Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Number 14 and several other freight trains climbing all over the pass. Several meets happened in this video as well because this line was PACKED full of trains. Here they all are.

This day was soo much fun reliving my childhood days when my uncle would bring me up here to watch trains. The Tehachapi loop is the exact place where my love for trains was sparked when I was 5. I’m not able to make it out here often but I hope I can again soon, because I’ll be honest. I got goosebumps at how awesome this line is, I have all kinds of stories I could tell about this line, and a huge part of my childhood memories have been spent here. I’d also like to thank the awesome people behind the live train cams on this line. This line will never grow old to me.

Unpatched Cotton Belt (SSW) GP60, with CN SD75I in Tehachapi!
Never expected to see an Unpatched Cotton Belt (SSW) Locomotive every, let alone in Tehachapi, by surprise! There are only a few of these locomotives remaining, and most of them are fading away slowly, so this is a very rare catch! Most of these locomotives (the few remaining ones) tend to stay in the Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, Arkansas and Kansas area, so this is a once in a lifetime catch for it to be in the West Coast. Great crew on this train, as it passed us in Monolith, heading to Roseville, CA. Unit of Interest: SSW #9647 (EMD GP60) Built in 1989. Train ID: M-WCRVC-13 (UP 5429 north)
Also included, is a Canadian National SD75I Locomotive in Cameron Canyon, just east of Tehachapi on a BNSF Manifest, heading to Northern California, Oregon, and Washington States. Train ID: M-BARRIC1-12A

Cantilever Railroad Signal Bridge at Tehachapi, CA
On May 1st, 2013, the Union Pacific Railroad removed the 1940's era (approx)
Southern Pacific Cantilever Signal Bridge from the town of Tehachapi as it
upgraded it's communications and signaling system. Join a group of rail fans,
watching from the restored historic Southern Pacific Depot and museum, as
the UP Signal Crew puts cutting torch and heavy-lift crane to the beautiful old
signal tower. Unfortunately, another piece of classic railroad architecture
passes into history, however, rumor has it that a local Tehachapi resident
has salvaged the signal bridge, and may place it on display on his property
near the famous Tehachapi Loop, just a few miles outside of town!
