The Asiatic lion is a Panthera leo leo population in India. Its range is restricted to the Gir National Park and environs in the Indian state of Gujarat. On the IUCN Red List, it is listed under its former scientific name Panthera leo persica as Endangered because of its small population size and area of occupancy.
The Asiatic lion was first described in 1826 by the Austrian zoologist Johann N. Meyer who named it Felis leo persicus. Until the 19th century, it occurred in eastern Turkey, Iran, Mesopotamia, and from east of the Indus River to Bengal and Narmada River in Central India.
Since the turn of the 20th century, it is restricted to the Gir Forest National Park and surrounding areas. This lion population has steadily increased since 2010. In May 2015, the 14th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over an area of about 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi); the lion population was estimated at 523 individuals, comprising 109 adult males, 201 adult females and 213 cubs.
In August 2017, a similar census revealed 650 wild individuals.
The lion is one of five pantherine cats inhabiting India, along with the Bengal tiger (P. tigris tigris), Indian leopard (P. pardus fusca), snow leopard (P. uncia) and clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa). It was also known as Indian lion and Persian lion

A pair of Asiatic lions returned to Iran after eighty years on Thursday, in a ceremony held at Tehran Zoological Garden.
The institution, also known as Eram zoo, took seven years to bring back the lions after submitting a request to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
We also tried for 7 years and we have finally been able to achieve necessary standards and standards that are even higher than [the] Europeans. So two Persian lions were allocated to Tehran's Eram zoo.
The 6-year-old male lion from Bristol zoo [whose] name is Hirman and another 4-year-old female lion from Dublin zoo in Ireland, and her name is Ilda, explained Director Iman Memarian.
Visitors paid half-price tickets to see the lions on Thursday, and were pleased to witness the return of the species, which has been extinct in Iran for almost eighty years.
I think we did not just take back one species today, but we took back a symbol and a generation of our civilization, said Elmia Rabani Azad.
Asiatic lions once were present in the Middle East and India, but today only a small number of them survive in the wild.

Pahlavi Foundation, Meeting, Tehran 1977
To preserve the best of the past and to find a suitable symphysis with the present; that is the aim that the empress constantly follows. She is the patron or chairman of more than twenty-five cultural and social foundations.
Here, she is presiding over a meeting of the Pahlavi foundation. This organization for example, promotes art and artists and also maintains over fifty orphanages all over the country.
The members of the board include writers, artists, sculptors, painters, film makers and social workers.
In spite of her heavy schedule, the empress takes the time to be personally informed of the progress of the different activities. She's not content to be just the figure head and she is personally involved in all the decisions taken by the foundation.

Iran Persian Fallow Deer, Dasht Naz national park, Sari بوستان ملي دشت ناز ساري گوزن زرد ايران
May 7, 2019 (Persian calendar 1398/2/17)
Mazandaran province (استان مازندران)
Sari county (شهرستان ساري)
The Persian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica) (gavazn-i zard in Persian گوزن زرد) (Yah-mur in modern Hebrew) is a rare ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae.
Its taxonomic status is disputed, with some maintaining it as a subspecies of the fallow deer, while others treat it as a separate species, Dama mesopotamica.
Persian fallow deer are physically larger than fallow deer, and their antlers are bigger and less palmated. They are nearly extinct today, inhabiting only a small habitat in Khuzestan, southern Iran, two rather small protected areas in Mazandaran (northern Iran), an area of northern Israel, an island in Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran, and in some parts of Iraq.
They were formerly found from Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Cyrenaica and Cyprus. Their preferred habitat is open woodland. They are bred in zoos and parks in Iran, Israel, and Germany today. In 1978, as the Iranian Revolution was unfolding, with the help of Prince Gholam Reza Pahlavi (the Shah's brother) and the chief of the games and wild life of Iran, the Israeli conservationists carried some of the captive fallow deer out of Iran and into Israel for safekeeping.
Since 1996, they have been gradually and successfully reintroduced from a breeding center in the Carmel, into the wild in northern Israel, and more than 650 of them now live in the Galilee, Mount Carmel areas and the Brook of Sorek; however, this population is hybridized with D. Dama.
The population of Persian fallow deer has become well established in Iran and gradually growing in number in a number of protected parks and zoos. Due to the rarity of this species, little information exists on their behavior and social structure in the wild; therefore, most biological information comes from captive-bred or reintroduced deer, which may not present an accurate representation of the natural population.
