Tenerife 2017 - Including a trip to Teide - Teide by night
A short video showing a glimpse of a last minute holiday to Tenerife. Jay and I stayed in Puerto de la cruz and explored around Santa Cruz, Loro Parque and went on an excursion to Teide. I would definitely recommend doing the 'Teide by night' excursion if you get the chance as you see the most breathtaking views that you have to see with your own eyes as nothing can capture the sights you see.
Hope you enjoy - Pete.
Recorded with a Canon 750d and an iPhone 6 for the time-lapse at the end.

We love to get out of the house and just move around to find new places. We knew there was some kind of celebration going on in La Matanza and La Victoria and we wanted to check it out. Going to the market in Tenerife turns out to be always a joyous encounter with local life, some music and dancing. Also, the fruit are delicious! I think the vegetables, cheese and meat are of better quality than in stores. So, we did some grocery and walked around the chestnut festival market. Those chestnuts on open fire are really tasty.
Min: La Matanza (The Slaughter). You know how they say ‘history is written by the victors’? This is the case of ‘The Slaughter”, the place where the Spaniards were defeated by the guanches in the 15th century. Since they got beaten really bad, they called the place La Matanza, and, when they won, they got to brag about it naming the village, La Victoria. Both are very nice, quiet villages in Northern Tenerife. A 15 minutes’ drive on the highway, in opposite directions, would take you to both Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz. Like in all villages here, you can find everything you need: banks, public schools, sports and seniors’ centers, parks, shopping areas… So, living in a small community may not be a bad idea, considering the lower prices of houses, both for rent and for sale.
La Victoria is closer to La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz. La Orotava is one of the most beautiful pueblos on the island. It used to be, together with Puerto de la Cruz, the hub of Tenerife, with all ships harboring here, very vivid, very prosperous. The old city takes you on an amazing journey in time, architecture and vegetation.
We love the micro climates in Tenerife. If it is too hot in Santa Cruz, we go further North. 10 to 20 minutes later, we would find shade and even drops of rain in La Laguna, or on the way up to Teide Volcano.
Teide National Park feels like time travelling. From lavish vegetation to moon like scenery, incredible trails through shady forests, and literally head in the clouds, this is a drive we never get bored of. We’ve climbed the cable car to the highest station and are looking forward to booking a trip (only by foot) to the top. We’d also very curious about the stargazing experience which we hope to live soon.
VOLCANO STARGAZING TOUR | TIEDE TENERIFE
I went on a volcano stargazing tour on Tiede in Tenerife last week and it was truly amazing. We went on a coach trip and saw the sunset on our way up the volcano. We stopped and ate food at Bodegas Reveron which was amazing, before an hour long talk about the stars near the summit of Tiede.

Mount Teide in Tenerife, the Third Highest Volcano in the World
Mount Teide is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Its 3,718-metre summit is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic. At 7,500 m from its base on the ocean floor, it is the third highest volcano in the world, after Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Its elevation makes Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world.
El Teide remains active: its most recent eruption occurred in 1909. The United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation designated Teide a Decade Volcano because of its history of destructive eruptions and its proximity to several large towns. The volcano and its surroundings comprise Teide National Parkwhich was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. It is one of the most visited National Parks in the world.
From the car park, tourists can take the 10 minute cable lift to 3550 m. To climb to the summit special permission is essential by request to the National Park Office in Santa Cruz. From the top there is an amazing view all over the island.
The ascent by foot starts at the base of the Montaña Blanca, at an altitude of 2200 m. Don't underestimate the short walk as the gradient and low oxygen levels make it challenging even for experienced walkers. After a relatively gentle start up a 4x4 track for around 4 km, you begin the steep and spectacular climb, ascending 530 m in just over 1.5 km, when you will reach the recently rebuilt Altavista Refuge. This offers climbers a bed for a maximum of a night and kitchen facilities. After a further kilometre and 250 m ascent, the path joins another leading to La Fortaleza viewpoint, which follows the contour around El Teide to the cable lift.

Places to see in ( Tenerife - Spain )
Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, off West Africa. It's dominated by Mt. Teide, a dormant volcano that is Spain's tallest peak. Tenerife may be best known for its Carnaval de Santa Cruz, a huge pre-Lent festival with parades, music, dancing and colorful costumes. The island has many beaches (with sands from yellow to black) and resort areas, including Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.
Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most of any of the Canary Islands. Tenerife is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain and the world. Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is working to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Served by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, Tenerife is the economic centre of the archipelago. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands. In 1927 the Crown ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present. Santa Cruz contains the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands.
Tenerife is home to the University of La Laguna; founded in 1792 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the oldest university in the Canaries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is the second to have been founded on the island, and is the third of the archipelago. The city of La Laguna was capital of the Canary Islands before Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833. Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site in the center of the island, has Teide, the highest elevation of Spain, the highest of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the third-largest volcano in the world from its base. Also located on the island, Macizo de Anaga since 2015 has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Tenerife has the largest number of endemic species in Europe.
Below is an alphabetical list of all the municipalities on the island:
Adeje, Arafo, Arico, Arona, Buenavista del Norte, Candelaria, Fasnia, Garachico, Granadilla de Abona, La Guancha, Guía de Isora, Güímar, Icod de los Vinos, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos, El Rosario, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, San Juan de la Rambla, San Miguel de Abona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santa Úrsula, Santiago del Teide, El Sauzal, Los Silos, Tacoronte, El Tanque, Tegueste, La Victoria de Acentejo, Vilaflor
Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. More recently coastal development has spread northwards from Playa de las Americas and now encompasses the former small enclave of La Caleta (a favoured place for naturist tourists). The capital, Santa Cruz, is a port city with wide, tree-lined boulevards. The islands interior falls mostly within Teide National Park, encompassing the islands 3 volcanoes, as well as lava fields, striking rock formations and ancient forests. [wikipedia // Google]
