My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Eric Goldman's Jewish Cinematheque: Tel Aviv on Fire director Sameh Zoabi
Sameh Zoabi, the Arab Israeli co-writer and director of the 2019 hit comedy Tel Aviv on Fire, sits down with Eric and explains his upbringing in a small village outside of Nazareth, his journey into filmmaking in Tel Aviv and New York City, and the underlying messages of his aforementioned new film, which chronicles the comedic trials and tribulations of Salam, a Palestinian living in Jerusalem whose work on a popular soap opera causes him to form an unlikely relationship with an Israeli commander at a nearby checkpoint. Tel Aviv on Fire is in theaters now.

Aziz Abu Sarah and young religous Israelis near the cinematheque of Tel Aviv. November 9, 2014
They walked away after taking part in a meaningful dialog for about 20 minutes or so.
So sad how people, on both sides, find it so hard to believe that dialog could lead to understandings and peace.
This street dialog was organized by the Palestinian-Israeli Bereaved Families Forum. It takes place every Saturday for many weeks already.
The religious young Israelis stopped there by chance. They will soon be serving in the army, they told me. I talked with them in person after they walked out. They did listen, but it was too much for them to digest. They told me about their anxiety of having to soon face stones by Palestinians, on the one hand, and orders of not to shoot stone throwers, on the other hand.
They were not there at the beginning of Aziz' talk, to hear his personal story and how his beloved brother was killed by Israelis. When I told them about it, they wanted to know why he was killed. Was he throwing stones, they asked. I tried to tell them to hear the story from Aziz, but they insisted to here a yes or no. I told them that he did stone, and they said that he deserved it then...
They walked out after Aziz suggested to invite Hamas people from Gaza to Israel to a dialog. They said that in any other country, such talks would be forbidden. They couldn't take it any more and as they walked out, they said that Aziz lives in a movie, which means, in a dream. They referred to Aziz' comment that it's possible to talk with everybody, including with people from Hamas.
Almost all others at the event, of course, were totally with Aziz. Almost, but not all. Some said that it's all only up to the main political leaders. Some where there for the first time and were very impressed and said that they agree, that it won't end until we talk (the slogan of the Bereaved Families Forum).
All in all, it's just sad and tragic.
There were a few other passers by that were not happy with the whole event. One of them had lost two brothers in the conflict. He was not really listening. And it was hard also to others to listen to him.
Too much pain and anger and fear and rate to handle. Too much for everybody.
I wish that many many more Israelis came to listen to this street dialog. And that such events would take place also in Ramallah, Haifa, Jenin, Jerusalem, Hebron, Ashdod, Nablus, Modyin, Tulkarem, and Netanya.

Tel Aviv's New Kosher Bacon Cheeseburger
Sitting right across from the Cinematheque, Bodega is Tel Aviv’s newest, American-style burger joint. That’s where Todd Aarons and James Oppenheim serve kosher Philly Cheese Steaks and B.L.T.s, and everything is certifiably, mouth-wateringly delicious.
Todd Aarons grew up in LA and has been a professional chef for over 20 years. He has worked in kitchens in Italy, NYC, San Francisco, LA, and Israel, and was founding executive chef of Tierra Sur in Oxnard, CA. James Oppenheim has been working in high tech for over 20 years before entering the food business.
We are super excited to host Todd Aarons and James Oppenheim on the podcast today.
A History of Israeli Cinema
Israel as a nation is far younger than motion pictures; in fact, its modern identity has been formed in parallel with the medium of film. Israeli films, when seen unfolding over time as they do in this engrossing retrospective documentary, reveal a cinematic national identity that encapsulates the emotional reality of a country often torn by ethnic, religious and political conflicts.
Award-winning filmmaker Raphaël Nadjari (Tehilim, SFJFF 2008) weaves together in-depth research and extraordinary film clips spanning more than 60 years to give us a kaleidoscopic visual retelling of the history of a national cinema. Dividing his film chronologically, Nadjari has crafted an assemblage of fascinating interviews with leading Israeli actors, producers, film critics, scholars and filmmakers, laced with film sequences spanning early silent films to the present-day renaissance of the Israeli film industry. Part One begins in 1933 with visions of the Zionist dream and takes us to 1978, when themes of memory and loss share the spotlight. The second part, from 1978 to 2005, vibrantly depicts the wave of political films from the 1980s contrasted to the more personal cinema of today. Interviewees include Amos Gitai, Joseph Cedar, Avi Mograbi, Yehuda Neeman, Menachem Golan, Moshe Ivgy, Ronit Elkabetz and Zeev Revach. A must see for any fan of Israeli cinema and a fabulous introduction for the uninitiated.
