What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The Wall of Jericho is a Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) defensive or flood protection wall suggested to date to approximately 8000 BC. In the Book of Joshua, the Israelites destroy the wall of Jericho by walking around it with the Ark of the Covenant for seven days, on the last of which they blew trumpets of rams' horns and shouted to make the walls fall down (Joshua 6:20). The events of the account are suggested to be dated at around 1400 BC. Speculations about the existence of fortifications dating to this period persisted in biblical archaeology until Kathleen Kenyon's comprehensive excavations in the 1950s. One wall was excavated by Sir Charles Warren in 1868 at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund. He dug through the mud bricks of the wall without realizing what it was, suggesting there was little of interest at the site. Ernest Sellin and Carl Watzinger excavated Jericho between 1907 and 1909 and found the remains of two walls which they initially suggested supported the biblical account. They later revised this conclusion and dated their finds to the middle Bronze Age (1950-1550 BC). The site was again excavated by John Garstang between 1930 and 1936, who again raised the suggestion that remains of the upper wall was that described in the Bible. Kathleen Kenyon resumed extensive excavations between 1952 and 1958 and found no late Bronze Age defensive wall or pottery. Her excavations found a series of seventeen early Bronze Age walls, some of which she thought may have been destroyed by earthquakes. The last of the walls was put together in a hurry, indicating that the settlement had been destroyed by nomadic invaders. Another wall was built by a more sophisticated culture in the middle Bronze Age with a steep plastered escarpment leading up to mud bricks on top. After this there was a hiatus until later iron age material dating to around the seventh century BC. They did not find substantial evidence for renewed occupation in the late Bronze Age at the time of Joshua, which in general agreed with the earlier statement by Watzinger that in the time of Joshua, Jericho was a heap of ruins, on which stood perhaps a few isolated huts. Perhaps the most important discovery was evidence that the earliest wall suggested by Kenyon to date to around 8000 BC based on Radiocarbon dating of material at 7825 BC from level IV, phase III of the site. This time period was thereafter called the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A stone age and the wall considered part of an early proto-city. It surrounded and protected a Neolithic settlement which contained an organized community of between 2000 to 3000 people. The wall was complemented by a stone tower built into it. The wall is thought to have been built in order to prevent floods and the tower used for ceremonial purposes[6] but the height of the wall (approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) thick and 12 to 17 feet (4--5 m) high) as well as that of the tower suggests a defensive purpose as well. Furthermore, the construction of such a project implies some sort of social organization, division of labour, and classes. Surrounding the wall was a ditch 27 feet (8 m) wide by 9 feet (3 m) deep, cut through solid bedrock with a circumference of around the town of as much as 600 metres (2,000 ft). Kathleen Kenyon commented on the work involved in the construction of the ditch: The labor involved in excavating this ditch out of solid rock must have been tremendous. As we have discovered nothing in the way of heavy flint picks, one can only suppose that it was carried out with stone mauls, perhaps helped by splitting with fire and water.The wall itself was 6.5 feet (2 m) wide by 12 feet (4 m) high. The town of Jericho, which was about six acres (2.5 ha) in size, preceded the wall by about 500 years. In fact, evidence suggests that construction started prior to the agricultural revolution. The town contained round mud-brick houses, yet no street planning. Despite the existence of the wall and tower, Jericho is still a proto-city, much like Çatalhöyük. Speculation persists about the purpose of the tower and it may have had several purposes. Archaeologists Ran Barkai and Roy Liran used computers to reconstruct sunsets and recently found that when the Tower of Jericho was built, nearby mountains cast a shadow on it as the sun set on the longest day of the year. The shadow fell exactly on the structure and then spread out to cover the entire village of Jericho. In an article in the Jerusalem Post, archaeologist Ran Barkai argued that the structure was used to create awe and inspiration to convince people into a harder way of life with the development of agriculture and social hierarchies. He concluded with, We believe this tower was one of the mechanisms to motivate people to take part in a communal lifestyle.

Jericho - 'Ariha' in arabic, known as the city of palms or the city of the moon, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world dating back 10,000 years. It is also the lowest city in the world lying at 260 meters below Sea level. Jericho contains some of the world's most important historic sites and is frequently mentioned in the Bible. Its moderate climate makes it a favorable winter resort.

JERICHO - NO JEWS ALLOWED WHILE UNDER PALESTINIAN CONTROL

Jericho is under Palestinian Rule and they make it very clear that Jews and Israelis are not welcome. The hypocrisy here is the residents of Jericho own all the food and tourist shops right outside of Jericho on Israeli land. This is modern day Israel.
Area A (full civil and security control by the Palestinian Authority): circa 3% of the West Bank, exclusive East Jerusalem (first phase, 1995).
This area includes eight Palestinian cities and their surrounding areas (Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarem, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jericho and 80 percent of Hebron), with no Israeli settlements. Entry into this area is forbidden to all Israeli citizens.
The Israel Defense Forces occasionally enters the area to conduct raids to arrest suspected militants.
Commonly known as “the oldest city in the world,” Jericho is an important historical, cultural, and political center located northwest of the Dead Sea.
The city is perhaps best known from the Biblical story of a great victory over its Canaanite citizens by the Israelite leader Joshua. In the story, the walls of the heavily fortified city were destroyed with divine assistance during the year 1400 b.c. The site of ancient Jericho, known today as Tell es-Sultan, has been the focus of several archaeological excavations to investigate the Biblical story. The original settlement was built on a hill, or “tell”. The results of these excavations suggest that the walls of Tell es-Sultan have been built and rebuilt many times, due mainly to collapse caused by earthquakes, which are common in the region.
One of these events may be the basis for the story of Joshua.
Mount of Temptation Monastery in Jericho, Palestinian Territories
The Monastery of the Temptation is a Greek Orthodox monastery located in Jericho, Palestine. It was built on the slopes of the Mount of Temptation 350 meters above sea level, situated along a cliff overlooking the city of Jericho and the Jordan Valley.
It currently serves as a tourist attraction and its land is under the full jurisdiction of the Palestinian National Authority, although the monastery is owned and managed by the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem.
Perched upon a sheer cliff face, Mount of Temptation Monastery looks out over panoramic views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and dramatic surrounding mountains. Regarded by the Orthodox church as the spot where the devil once tempted Jesus during the latter's 40-day fast, the site has existed in some form since 6 CE, developed and reconstructed over thousands of years. Ride the cable car or hike the steep 400 m incline to the summit. Once there, wonder at the impressive carving of the monastery, cut directly into the cliff face some 350 m above sea level.
Northwest of central Jericho, the hillside of Qarantal plays an important role in Christian tradition. This is a major point of interest for Christian visitors who know the hill as the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus Christ fasted after being baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. In AD 340, St. Chariton built a chapel on the hill summit, and another was built by the cave in which Jesus is said to have sheltered. The Greek Orthodox Church acquired the site in 1875 and in 1895 built the Sarandarion Monastery (the name refers to the 40 days of Jesus' fast) halfway up the hill. From the monastery, a steep path runs up to the summit on which you can visit the remains of St. Chariton's original chapel. The views from the top across the arid hills are fantastic. For those that don't fancy the hike, the Jericho Cable Car runs from Jericho up to the summit, with excellent views across the countryside along the way.
It has interesting history by self.
A fortress built by the Seleucids called Doq stood at the summit of the mountain. It was captured by the Hasmoneans and it was here that Simon Maccabaeus was murdered by his son-in-law Ptolemy.
The earliest monastery was constructed by the Byzantines in the 6th century CE above the cave traditionally said to be that where Jesus spent forty days and forty nights fasting and meditating during the temptation of Satan, about three kilometers northwest of Jericho. The monastery receives its name from the mountain which the early Christians referred to as the Mount of the Temptation. The Mount of Temptation was identified by Augusta Helena of Constantinople as one of the holy sites in her pilgrimage in 326 CE.
Palestine, including Jericho, was conquered by the Arabs under the Islamic Caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab in the 630s.
When the Crusaders conquered the area in 1099, they built two churches on the site: one in a cave halfway up the cliff and a second on the summit. They referred to the site as Mons Quarantana (from Quaranta meaning forty in Italian, the number of days in the Gospel account of Jesus's fast).
The land upon which the modern monastery was built was purchased by the Orthodox Church in 1874. In 1895, the monastery was constructed around a crude cave chapel that marks the stone where Jesus sat during his fast.
The Orthodox Church, along with its Palestinian Orthodox followers purchaser,[dubious – discuss] originally attempted to build a church at the summit, but were unsuccessful; the unfinished walls of that church are located on a slope above the monastery.
As of 2002, three Orthodox monks were dwelling in the monastery and were guiding visitors to the site.
In 1998, a cable car was built from Jericho's Tell es-Sultan to the level of the monastery by an Austrian-Swiss company as a tourist attraction for the year 2000. At present there is a restaurant, a cafe and a souvenir shop at the monastery entrance for the tourists.
