On the day I visited, it was early in the tourist season and the mosaic was covered with plastic and earth. I was the only visitor there, even though it is an official pilgrimage destination for Catholics. Being alone at the antiquity was peaceful and tranquil, making it a fantastic location for reflection and introspection. The high elevation offers an expansive vista of the fertile Jordan River Valley. It was an invigorating experience for my soul to be in such a reverend location. The site of Tel Mar Elias is only a few kilometres from the famous Ajloun castle. My driver had only been there once, he vaguely knew the way and he was excited to visit again. There was very little signage, so we stopped once at a junction to ask the driver of a passing car for direction, it turned out we had headed the correct way.
The site at Tel Mar Elias includes the remains of two Byzantine churches, scattered across the top of a hill. The site is associated with the Prophet Elijah as it is very close to the ruins of a village known as Listib, formerly Tishbi, known as the home of Elijah. This site has been identified as the same place Elijah ascended to Heaven. The story goes that as a prophet Elijah who was known for raising the dead and calling down fire from heaven was oppressed by the ruling of King Ahab in Israel. So as an old man, God told Elijah to leave Israel and settle in the land that is now Jordan. When Elijah and his successor Elisha arrived at the River Jordan, Elijah struck the water with his cloak, the water parted and they crossed the dry land. As they reached the other side of the river, a fiery chariot came and carried Elijah into the heavens (2 Kings 2). Elijah is referred to in both the Bible and the Qur'an.
The two Byzantine churches have, what I believe are wonderful mosaics dating from 622 AD mentioning Prophet Elijah. As I mentioned previously, I visited early in the tourist season and the mosaics were covered with plastic and earth. What I could see were intricate and ornate geometric patterns. In the centre of the site, there is an oak tree with hundreds of pieces of cloth and ribbons tied to its branches. There is a tradition among both Muslims and Christians to pray at the tree for health and healing.

Ajloun is a town in the fertile highlands of north Jordan. It’s overlooked by the ruined Ajloun Castle, originally built in 1184 to defend against the Crusaders. Inside, the Ajloun Archaeological Museum’s displays include ancient Neolithic artifacts. The Ajloun Castle Trail winds north to the ruined hilltop church of Mar Elias. The Prophet’s Trail continues through orchards and oak trees to the Ajloun Forest Reserve.

Wonderful Sunset in Ajloun - Timelapse
Visit Ajloun , A beautiful city full of forests and rocky mountains .The city contains lots of historical places such as the castle , Mar Elias ancient church , Lestib mosque , the lady of the mount, Tantor (a church in Halawa village) and the museum .
Ajloun has a wonderful climate , sunny and breezy during the summer , around 27C , cold weather sometimes snowy in winter , colorful autumn and stunning sceneries in spring season.
The people in Ajloun are welcoming everyone specially tourists , friendly and helpful .
Traveling inside Ajloun is not difficult as there is many taxis in the down town and the bus complex , the town radius is actually small , around 1km only . Apps such as Uber and Careem are not available in the city.
There is a decent restaurants in the town owned by locals and Syrian refugees , they serve traditional Jordanian dishes , and also there s a couple of Shawerma restaurants.
Threre is couple of places you can spend your nights in Ajloun , The hotel of Ajloun , its near the castle . Ajloun forest reserve motels (kind of wooden cottages) , and cottages near Eshtafina (4km from the town) . There is a nice little hotel colored orange near Eshtafina which you can stay in and it has a restaurant, You can also rend furnished houses from locals buy directly asking locals and most of them in Ebbin and Ra'as Munif (around 50 US $ per night) .
Entertainment in Ajloun is not noted since the government is not paying attention to the city even though its the only green place in Jordan , but you can find some outdoor games in Rasoun Tourist Camp like tightrope walking, and the offer a stay in decent tents .
There is a park in Eshtafina which has playground games and a restaurant , places to grill , WC's and other facilities .

أخذ الموقع أهمية خاصة له و ذلك لأنه اعتبر من مواقع الحج المسيحي في الأردن، و الذي أقره الفاتيكان كموقع المغطس الذي يبعد عن البحر الميت حوالي 11كم إلى شمال، و غيرها من مواقع الحج المسيحي في الأردن. و قد كشفت التنقيبات الأثرية في الأعوام 1999م و 2001م عن أهم أثار الموقع و هي: • دير مار إلياس و هو المكان الذي صعد منه النبي إيليا إلى السماء، و كرس الدير للرهبان. • و الكنائس التي تم العثور عليها في الموقع، و سنأتي على ذكرها بالتفصيل.

Anjara Jordan
Anjara is a biblical city and features on most biblical tours of Jordan, were the shrine of the Lady of the Mountain at the Roman Catholic Church.The church consists of a large hall to receive pilgrims who come to honor the list size wooden statue of Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus placed within a newly built grotto. It is believed that Jesus Christ and his disciples including Virgin Mary passed through Anjara once and rested in a cave there during a journey between Jerusalem and Galilee.
The cave in Anjara has long been a holy place for pilgrims and has now been commemorated with a modern shrine, the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain. The cave was also
designated by the Catholic Churches of the Middle East as one of the five pilgrimage sites, the others were Mount Nebo, Machaerus, Tell Mar Elias near Ajloun, and the Jordan River region at Bethany beyond the Jordan.
