Zichron Yaakov, an arty town with a colorful history
Nature, history, quaint shops and wine – it’s all here in Zichron Yaakov, a northern Israeli town with lots of tourist appeal.
The northern town of Zichron Yaakov ( is not only the home of Israel’s first winery, Carmel, but also an increasingly popular tourist spot for its beautiful vistas, historic sites and charming main street full of unique shops and eateries.
In this video, you’ll get a taste of the famous winery founded by Baron Edmond de Rothschild; a walk around Ramat Hanadiv Memorial Gardens; a glimpse into the historic home of World War I spies for the British; and a talk with the owner of the Tut-Neyar (Berry Paper) paper mill.
Says Tut-Neyar owner Timna Neumann: “We get tourists from all over the world. Just today we had [people] from Australia, from South Africa, from England -- all over. I don't miss the big city at all; I like it here.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Arie Hochberg, Importer, Israeli Wine Direct:
Basically we are trying to educate the American public about the high quality of Israeli wines. We are trying to put Israel on the map, to be known as a wine producer. We are trying to make Israel known as Bordeaux or Burgundy of the world.
12. Ella Valley stand
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Arie Hochberg, Importer, Israeli Wine Direct:
The American public thinks about Israeli wines as Kosher, sweet, and mainly for Kiddush (Friday night blessing). There are some breakthroughs. We currently have wines with the best restaurants in New York City, Le Bernardin, Daniels and many Middle Eastern restaurants.

17. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Yoram Shalom, Winemaker from Alexander winery
I think I am the only Kosher and Israeli winery in the world that also managed to enter a restaurant with three Michelin stars from Joel Robuchon in Tokyo. For me this is the Oscar, and to get from (Robert) Parker 94 is another level above the Oscar.
18. Pan on bottles from Alexander wineries
19. SOUNDBITE (English) W. Blake Gray, wine critic writing for the Gray Report:
It's very interesting what's going on here. The industry was all based about volume and production until maybe 20 years ago and in the last ten years, 15 years, there's been a flowering of boutique wineries that are trying to make great wine. I think before people were just trying to make wine, and it's very exciting what they are doing here, it's one of the more exciting regions in the world for that because it's interesting that it is a place that was making wine 6000 years ago, and yet there was no wine history at all when people restarted the industry, so people don't know what the best wines are going to be from here yet and that makes it a very interesting place to be.

21. Pan on Golan Heights Winery stand

23. Pan up on Jerusalem wineries
24. SOUNDBITE (English) Ofer Sachs, Director General of the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute:
We are very optimistic, there is a very positive trend. The Israeli exporters, the wine exporters are going way beyond the Jewish populations and go for the general markets as well. This is the trend that of course evaluates and appreciates a good quality wine.
25. Pan on exposition
26. Exterior cultural centre with banner saying Sommelier 2016
LEADIN:
Israel's wine producers are trying to persuade the world that there's more to their product than the traditional sweet variety usually used for blessings.
They say they are ready to take on the likes of France to become the biggest wine producers in the world.
STORYLINE:
Professionals from the Israeli wine industry are here to show off their wines at Sommelier 2016 in Tel Aviv.
According to the Israeli export industry, Israel has around 300 wineries and turns around a billion shekel a year.
Sommelier 2016 runs 26 - 27th January 2016.

Holy land Trips | What to Wear in Israel? Fall/ Winter |
Hi, I’m Naomi from Immanuel Tours and today I'm going to be talking about what to pack to Israel by season.
and todays season is going to be fall and winter. For fall and winter just like the rest of the world I recommend bringing warmer clothing depending on where you go places of higher altitudes tend to be a little bit colder so I would recommend bringing like a big hoodie or jacket or something to make sure that you don't freeze while you are out there along with that I would recommend bringing some rain gear like a rain jacket in case there's some rain while you are there however during the day It can get a little hot and so make sure that you have some lighter options available for you during your tour. So for your fall and winter options kind of keep it similar to the spring and summer but add a few more options and a rain option for you so that you can be ready for any weather that hits you while you are in Israel. that's it for this video and I'll see you next time.

Ron Jacobsohn Goes on a Culinary Tour of the Galilee
Ron Jacobsohn, JN1 Correspondent:
Vineyards, gourmet restaurants, dairy farms and lots and lots of nature... JN1 takes you on a gourmet trip to the north of Israel on of the most beautiful areas of the country in the summer.
The Galilee is one of the most fascinating areas in Israel. Going there feels sometimes like time has not ruined its natural beauty and that its inhabitants want to keep it that way. Even Israelis who are always eager to go abroad come to the Galilee for a quick getaway from life’s daily stress.
Our first destination on our trip was in Kfar Tiqva, a village for people with special needs.
This is exactly where Roy Itzhaki’s dream came true to create him own winery but not without doing a lot of good in the process.
Roy Itzhaki, Owner, Tulip Winery:
In this village of hope, it looks like a Kibbutz but all the members are 200 members here are with special needs. So I grew up here in a town nearby and I knew the village very well, going to the nurse in the village. I came to the general manager of the village, I told him; look, I want to produce a winery, to produce wines, I want to share it with the community and help the community, so I have an idea to establish the winery here in the village and to employ those people from the village. All the wine critics abroad and specially the most important like Robert Parker and magazines like Wine Spectator gave us the best scores in Israel, always in the top-3, which is we are very happy with this, it's a huge success.
The next stop on our tour was at Bethlehem of Galilee where we found a farm called Spicy Way, which grows every herb and spices imaginable on their organic farm.
Shoshan Tzahor, Spicy Way:
We grow here outside the windows, we have some of our growing fields. We grow here, we dehydrate everything naturally. Some of it is in the store, some we buy from all over Israel, out of Israel and we make sure everything is whole. You have here, what you see behind me is the tea section, tea infusions; you have mixtures for meat, for rice and you have the medicinal herbs department. Everything here is natural and has nothing added to it, no preservatives or salts or anything and that is special. I mean you can get good and pure spices that much. We have a presentation, we have a lecture and we also do a tour in the fields. We have cooking classes which the main goal of them is to learn how to use spices and medicinal herbs on a daily basis.
We then stopped at Dalton, home of the Adir Winery, which to date is one of the biggest independent wine exporters in Israel.
Yossi Rosenberg, Owner, Adir Winery:
We produce every year about 100,000 bottles and most used for the domestic market and about 40% we export to different markets abroad. Basically, we do here all kinds of activities, which combine cheese and wine together, one part represents dairy and the other part represents the winery and we do all kinds of activities which deal with cheese and wine. In the cheese workshop we teach people how to make their own cheese. Each participant gets his own kit and he's doing his own cheese and in the wine workshop it's just an explanation about the wine words and the tasting, wine tastings.
Our final destination of the day was Gili’s Chef Restaurant in picturesque Amirim owned by renowned chef, Gili Altman.
Chef Gili Altman, Owner, Gili’s Chef Restaurant:
I have a diploma, but you don't need diploma to make special food from your heart. I try to make things that you will not find in another place, OK. I cook from inside, not what everybody wants to find in the restaurant; I'm trying to cook what I wish to get in a place like this. I served the dinner like for 2 hours, that people can see it and enjoy the view, the food, to drink. People who come and get our hotel and my restaurant they are not coming because they are hungry now, they are coming for a vacation, for a relax and even the food is not a big food. It's a lot of small plates that people can relax and take a seat and that's what I believe.
Reporter: First I take the cream and put it inside of the pan. Narration Altman challenged me to help him out to create his world famous truffles and who am I to say no to an offer like that.
Ron Jacobsohn, JN1 Correspondent:
This was an amazing experience and all I can say is that on your next trip to Israel, a visit to the pastoral galilee should be a must. For JN1 I am Ron Jacobsohn at Moshav Amirim just above the see of Galilee.
