Hohokam Ruin and Ancient Canal -Tempe Arizona
Loma del Rio is a Hohokam ruin located on a hillside in Papago park, in Tempe. It's right next to the Salt River just east of Mill Avenue. This ruin was a small residence which was occupied during the Classic Period, A.D. 1200 - A.D. 1450. It was home to approximately 15 to 20 people belonging to an extended family.
One of the oldest Hohokam Canals is located at this site. Between 500 A.D. to 1450 A.D. Prehistoric Hohokam Indians created an extensive desert valley canal system. Signs of their culture remained through the ruins of their dwellings, unearthed pottery shards and artifacts and carved petroglyphs in nearby rocks.
