Megg’s Cafe and Temple TX Railroad & Heritage Museum
After spending a couple of days inside because of the weather, Ace and I were ready to get out and explore some of the towns outside of Ft. Hood. The first town being Temple, TX.
Temple is a small town in central Texas that has a deep and rich history with the railroad. You can learn all about that history at the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum. The entrance fee isn’t very much, but if you have a military id, you can get in for free. This museum is pretty nice. You can even go outside and play on some older trains.
We had to grab some food when we out (of course), so we opted for Megg’s Cafe. With some of the best ratings on Yelp in all of Temple, we were excited to try it out. Megg’s cafe has an attached bakers, but is known for it’s Sunday brunch. We weren’t there on a Sunday, but we were able to try some of their brunch items & OMG. The Pastrami hash was amazeballs! With poached eggs, roasted/fried brussel sprouts, this dish is big enough for 2 people. Ace & I decided to split a short stack to see what all the talk was about the pancakes too.

Railfanning Temple, TX - BNSF, Amtrak, and more // Trinity Rail Productions
Here's a little bit of railroad action from the busy town of Temple, TX, located about 60 miles north of the Texas state capital. BNSF's Galveston, Lampasas, and Fort Worth subdivisions all terminate here and UP's Waco subdivision crosses BNSF's Galveston Sub just to the southeast of the Amtrak depot in downtown Temple. In addition to serving as the town's Amtrak station (with service to Chicago and San Antonio courtesy of the Texas Eagle), the restored Santa Fe depot is home to the Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum, which has a nice collection of railroad artifacts inside plus some unique locomotives and rolling stock outside in various stages of restoration.

Austin Western Railroad locomotives and BNSF action in Temple, TX!
On January 18, 2016, I found several Austin Western Railroad locomotives sitting in the Watco-owned short line's McNeil Yard. Also I caught a southbound UP ethanol train (pictures but no video) as well as a southbound BNSF mixed freight and some interesting EMD power in the Temple yard.

Reading and Northern's 4-6-0 225, formerly owned by the late George Hart as Canadian Pacific 1098, beautifully restored with a great blue paint job.
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives by wheel arrangement, 4-6-0 represents the configuration of four leading wheels on two axles in a leading bogie, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. In the mid 19th century, this wheel arrangement became the second most popular configuration for new steam locomotives in the United States of America, where this type is commonly referred to as a Ten-wheeler. As a locomotive pulling trains of light weight all wood passenger cars in the 1890-1920s, it was exceptionally stable at near 100 mph speeds on the New York Central's New York to Chicago Water Level Route and on the Reading Railroad's Camden to Atlantic City, NJ, line. As passenger equipment grew heavier with all steel construction, heavier locomotives replaced the Ten Wheeler.

Steam Locomotive No. 844
The Last of the Steam is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.
Many people know the engine as the No. 8444, since an extra '4' was added to its number in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel numbered in the 800 series. The steam engine regained its rightful number in June 1989, after the diesel was retired.
When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.
The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's ambassador of goodwill. It has made appearances at Expo '74 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989.
Hailed as Union Pacific's Living Legend, the engine is widely known among railroad enthusiasts for its excursion runs, especially over Union Pacific's fabled crossing of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming.

Temple is a city in Bell County, Texas, United States. As of 2016 the city has a population of 72,277 according to a US census estimate. Located near the county seat of Belton, Temple lies in the region referred to as Central Texas and is a principal city in the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The metro region has a population of 450,051. Located off Interstate 35, Temple is 65 miles (105 km) north of Austin and 34 miles (55 km) south of Waco.
Temple has developed as a small city with a number of arts and retail amenities not typically associated with a smaller community. The primary economic drivers are the extensive medical community (mostly due to Scott & White Memorial Hospital) and goods distribution based on its central location and proximity to larger cities, such as Austin and Waco. Paul Oster, the founder and the president of Better Qualified talks with News 12 about Anthem Security Breach and what everyone should know about it. It's been more than a year since health insurer Anthem disclosed what was by far the largest data breach in healthcare history, yet almost nothing further is known about the causes, costs and ramifications of the breach. The source of Anthem's breach has not been identified, although some reports have linked it to Chinese hackers. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment. However, it seems Anthem would want to disclose more information publicly, given its merger target, Cigna, previously held reservations about the effects of the data breach.
