Largo of Sofia
Location - Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Largo ensemble is part of the expansion of Nedelya Square (formerly Lenin Square) to the east. The ensemble consists of three main six-storey blocks - two rectangular and one trapezoidal - that surround the rectangular space open to the west, where, according to the original plan, the House of Soviets was to be built. This representative space is where two main boulevards -- Tsar Liberator (former Russian Blvd) from the south and Dondukov - from the north, join to highlight the focus of the Party House. The Largo is a major urban ensemble and public and administrative centre of the capital. It has a monumental symmetrical design with the dominant axis to the East. Being the main element in the series of squares from St. Nedelya Square, Alexander Battenberg Square to the National Assembly Square, the ensemble acts as a single body in the general spatial background, and it has achieved a complete urban-planning, architectural and artistic unity.

Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski in Sofia, Bulgaria
Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski in Sofia, Bulgaria
The gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built in the early 20th century in memory of the 200,000 Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Bulgarian soldiers, who died in the Russo-Turkish War, 1877–1878. It is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. The cathedral’s gold-plated dome is 45 m high, with the bell tower reaching 50.52 m.
The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Bulgarian: Храм-паметник „Свети Александър Невски“, Hram-pametnik „Sveti Aleksandar Nevski“) is a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, it serves as the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, as well as one of Sofia’s symbols and primary tourist attractions. The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia occupies an area of 3,170 square metres (34,100 sq ft) and can hold 10,000 people inside. It is the second biggest cathedral located on the Balkan Peninsula after the Cathedral of Saint Sava in Belgrade.
Architecture
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a cross-domed basilica featuring an emphasized central dome. The cathedral’s gold-plated dome is 45 m high (148 ft),
with the bell tower reaching 53 metres (174 ft).The temple has 12 bells with total weight of 23 tons, the heaviest weighing 12 tons and the lightest 10 kilograms (22 lb). The interior is decorated with Italian marble in various colours, Brazilian onyx, alabaster, and other luxurious materials. The central dome has the Lord’s Prayer inscribed around it, with thin gold letters.
The construction of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral started in 1882 (having been planned since 19 February, 1879), when the foundation stone was laid, but most of it was built between 1904 and 1912. Saint Alexander Nevsky was a Russian prince. The cathedral was created in honour to the Russian soldiers who died during theRusso-Turkish War of 1877-1878, as a result of which Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman rule.
The cathedral was designed by Alexander Pomerantsev, aided by Alexander Smirnov and Alexander Yakovlev, as the initial 1884-1885 project of Ivan Bogomolov was radically changed by Pomerantsev. The final design was finished in 1898, and the construction and decoration were done by a team of Bulgarian, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and other European artists, architects and workers, including the aforementioned architects, as well as Petko Momchilov, Yordan Milanov, Haralampi Tachev, Ivan Mrkvička, Vasily D. Bolotnov, Nikolay A. Bruni, A.A. Kiselyov, Anton Mitov and many others.
The marble parts and the lighting fixtures were created in Munich, the metal elements for the gates in Berlin, while the gates themselves were manufactured in Karl Bamberg’s factory in Vienna, and the mosaics were shipped from Venice.
The name of the cathedral was briefly changed to the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral between 1916 and 1920 (since Bulgaria and Russia belonged to opposing alliances in WWI), but then the initial name was restored. The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was proclaimed a monument of culture on 12 September 1924.

NEVSKY CATHEDRAL SOFIA BULGARIA
Description
The Zemen Monastery (Bulgarian: Земенски манастир, Zemenski manastir) is a Bulgarian Orthodox monastery located one kilometre away from the town of Zemen, Pernik Province in western Bulgaria.
The monastery was established in the 11th century. It is rather small with a church, belfry and two other buildings. It is currently uninhabited. The church is a monument of culture.
The church dates from the foundation of the monastery in the late 11th century and has a cube shape, 9 metres long, 8 metres wide, 11.20 metres high. The material used was travertine. The altar is a stone monolith and the floor is made of colourful tiles. The church is richly painted inside, with two layers of frescoes, the scarcely preserved early one dating to the 11th century. The better preserved Biblical scenes date from the mid-14th century and include several portraits of donors: the first one depicting an unnamed man, his wife Doya and their two children, the second featuring a young man, Vitomir, and a boy, Stoyu. These portraits rank among the oldest and artistically most valuable in the Balkans after the frescoes of the Boyana Church.

LEADIN
82-year-old Maria Zabova is known at the Iron Lady of Sofia.
Each day she scales the Bulgarian capital's towering cathedral belfry to ring the church bells across the city - sometimes for hours on end.
STORYLINE
The Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Bulgaria is one of the largest eastern Orthodox churches in the world.
Its belfry towers 53 metres (174 feet) above the capital city of Sofia. The cathedral was built in the late 19th Century to commemorate Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule.
A member of the congregation for Sunday mass inside this magnificent building is the equally magnificent Maria Zabova.
After some spiritual exercise - singing hymns - she prepares for some hard physical exercise.
Zabova has to climb the stairs up the cathedral's bell tower: all 220 of them.
Once she reaches the top her work is not finished, in fact, it's only just begun.
Zabova is a bell ringer at the cathedral, and despite her age she's just as energetic as somebody half her age.
She says: I never feel tired. Quite the contrary, when I am ringing the bells I start feeling such strength and I could ring them for a long time.
She's been ringing the bells here for 29 years.
The cathedral has 12 bells, weighing 23 tons in total and the heaviest tips the scales at 12 tons.
But the weight doesn't stop Zabova from performing sometimes for hours on end.

DesignMorphine_DynamicMutationsV3.0_Process
DYNAMIC MUTATIONS V3.0 is an international workshop of Advanced Design. The workshop will run using AutoDesk MAYA, Pixologic ZBRUSH, McNeel GRASSHOPPER 3D, and Epic Games UNREAL ENGINE 4. As we approach the era of virtual reality with tools such as the oculus rift and unreal engine 4, we decided to explore an aspect of beautiful virtual worlds that is often seen as a flaw. The glitch, which can be considered as the mutation and anomaly of the virtual world, will be the primary driving design language of this workshop. A glitch duplicates, distorts, replicates, and stretches virtual space into unexpected results. Dynamic Mutations V3.0 will explore the complex, unique and often unpredictable results a glitch can create. Participants will find interesting existing details of the built environment of Sofia, Bulgaria around the site and building of the Temple Sveti Nikolay. These details will then be mutated and replicated among the Temple Sveti Nikolay’s neighboring greenspace to create a new architecture which represents a glitched mutation of Sofia. In this way, we will materialize one of the major aspects that separates the virtual world from the physical realm, bringing virtual to reality.
