Tlacochahuaya 2006, Visperas y Maitines 1 - Invitatorio. Vespers and Matins Concert I
The Central Valley of Oaxaca (Southern Mexico) has a huge collection of Sacred Arrangements for Brass or Small Bands. Withs this series of 8 videos, we want to share with you what we deemed to be one of the most beautiful pieces we found. It's Called Vespers and Maitines and it comes form the town of Tlacochahuaya (I know It's kind of hard to pronounce and remember), but this a very good example of Sacred Music transcribed for Brass in the New World. After some interviews, and research of manuscripts, we came across this one from the Church and Ex-Convent of St. Jeronimo in Tlacochahuaya, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Tlacochahuaya was a Dominican Convent with a rich tradition in Sacred Music, this piece was arranged for Philharmonic Band by Maestro Donaciano Morales in the late 1800's. We found out that the author of the Te Deum included in this trasncription is the well known Mexican Composer of the Classical Period, Maestro Manuel Arenzana, we are not sure that he is the author of this whole Mass specifically, since the te Deum included in this transcription is the only movement that is exactly the same compared with his Maitines for the Virgin of Guadalupe, and this Mass has the Title Vespers and Maitines for the Good Shepherd, we can probaly assume he is the author of the whole Mass, however the merit on this videos is to show the trasncription and instrumentation that was made of this woek for Philharmonic Ensemble. Maestro Jose Angeles Martinez has kept this beautiful score and leads his band on this performance at the chorus of this magnificent XVI century church on Sept. 29th 2006.

Gracias.

Hip Hop Culture and its Visual Impact in Mexico. October 2018 talk with Maurice Rafael Magaña
Centering on the visual aspects of music culture, Maurice Rafael Magaña discusses the role of urban youth culture in shaping collective identity, particularly where migration, cross-culture pollination and public artwork are involved. In highlighting the perhaps surprising exchange between the Los Angeles hip hop scene and youth activists in Oaxaca, Mexico, he illustrates not only the communicative power of art in public spaces, but also the ways in which youth culture, art, and migration can intersect to shape collective identities and community histories of struggle.
