Portara Gate - Temple of Apollo, Naxos
The Portara, the great marble gate that stands high on the islet of Palatia, now united with Naxos town, is what remains of the Temple of Apollo, which to be built around the 6th-7th century BC but was never completed.
The gate is around 6 m high and 3.5 m wide built with four separate columns. Each column weighs about 20 tons. During the Middle Ages, a church was built behind the Portara. Later under Venetian rule, it was dismantled so that the marble could be used to build the Kastro, which is a fortress built during the time of the Venetians and other monuments and buildings.

GREECE, EXPLORING the ancient (6th century BC) TEMPLE of APOLLO ????️, Island of NAXOS
SUBSCRIBE: - The most famous landmark of Greece's Naxos Island is the Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway that leads nowhere. The Portara is the entrance to an unfinished temple that faces directly toward Delos, Apollo's birthplace. For this reason most scholars believe it was dedicated to Apollo, but some think it was built in honor of Dionysus, who was worshipped on Naxos Island.
Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Naxos Portara, Cyclades: The Portara, or the Great Door, is essentially a massive marble doorway, that stands proudly as teh jewel of Naxos. It lies close to the port, on the islet of Palatia which was once a hill. Back in the ancient times a strip of land connected the north side of Naxos port to the islet of Palatia. Today, the strip of land has been replaced by a causeway.

The Temple of Apollo, Bassae - Greece HD Travel Channel
The Temple of Apollo at Bassae lies 1,130 meters above sea level and can be reached by mountainous roads. The Temple of Apollo was built around 430 BC as gratitude to Apollo Epicurean, who allegedly saved the inhabitants during the Peloponnesian War with a medicinal plant from the plague.
However our husky is more interested in a cat.
The temple was completely destroyed but re-erected by archaeologists again. Since 1989 it is under a tent construction which, however, will be removed upon completion of the renovation works.
The temple combines the three Greek style elements - Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. It is the second best-preserved temple of the Greek mother country and because of its stones also one of the most beautiful. Unusual is its location in north - south direction.
From the adjacent settlement only fragments have been preserved.
Since 1986 the Temple of Apollo at Bassae is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Sunset over the temple of Apollo in Naxos
A short timelapse video (1 frame/0.5 sec) of the sunset as seen from Portara in Naxos, near the site of the Apollo temple ruins.
It was pretty windy, so the image is as steady as my tiny smartphone tripod would allow.
Temple Of Demeter Naxos - Ancient Greece
Temple Of Demeter Naxos - Ancient Greece
The Temple of Demeter was built in the 6th century BC. The temple was partially dismantled in the 6th century AD when a church was built over it. In later centuries the site was abandoned and plundered for its marble.
Just outside the village of Sangri on Naxos Island in the Cyclades is the attractive ruin of the Temple of Demeter. Demeter is a grain goddess, so it seems only natural to find her temple among the rich fields of Naxos.
Intimate little archaeological site where one can see the first known temple to use some of the optical refinements later used in the Parthenon. Free. Very windy and dry, bring sun protection if you plan to spend much time. Consult a guide or history book as well as there is limited interpretive signage on site.

Apollo's Gate and Old Market in Naxos, Greece
In Naxos, Greece, you'll find Apollo's Gate and the Old Market.
Apollo's Gate is the main landmark of Naxos. It's an impressive relic from long ago, like so many features in Greece. It sits just outside the main town of Naxos, and you cross a long strip of land shouldered by the Mediterranean Sea and the Naxos bay to get to it.
Also in Naxos is the Old Market. It's a wonderfully preserved market that really showcases Greek architecture, as well as delicious Greek food!
Temple of Apollo, Naxos
