GREECE, EXPLORING the ancient (6th century BC) TEMPLE of APOLLO ????️, Island of NAXOS
SUBSCRIBE: - The most famous landmark of Greece's Naxos Island is the Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway that leads nowhere. The Portara is the entrance to an unfinished temple that faces directly toward Delos, Apollo's birthplace. For this reason most scholars believe it was dedicated to Apollo, but some think it was built in honor of Dionysus, who was worshipped on Naxos Island.
Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Apollonas Naxos, From Sunrise to Sunset, 6/6/2018
Apollonas village is a settlement on Naxos’s northeastern coast about 36km from the island's capital (Chora - Hora). It is a beautiful fishing village which has been inhabited since antiquity, probably on account of the marble quarry.
Picturesque whitewashed houses are smeared behind an attractive small sandy beach which stretches on into a larger beach strewn with white egg-like pebbles offering a palette of gold, white and the blue expanse of the sea. All characteristically Greek colours. The beach is lined with taverns, tourist shops and a mini-market, there are also rooms to let, hotels, tavernas and cafes. It is an ideal for relaxing breaks and can be used as a base for exploring the surrounding area with its unique sights.
The unfinished 10.5 meter statue of Kouros can be seen just a few meters outside the entrance to the village. The statue dates back to the 6th century BC and archaeologists believe it represents the god Dionysus. (source: )
From the official web page of the Greek Ministry of Culture:
A sacred place of the Aegean with uninterrupted life and function from the 14th century B.C. up to our times. It is the cradle of the Ionic order of the monumental Greek architecture.
The sancturay of Iria has been located (1982), investigated (1986-1996) and presented to the public (1992-1996) by the University of Athens in collaboration with the Polytechnical School of Munich, with the financial support of both Univesities as well as the Ministry of Culture (research) and the Ministry of Aegean (presentation).
The religious function of the Iria sanctuary at Livadhi, Naxos, dates back , to prehistoric times (1300 B.C.) and the use of the site for religious purposes continues, uninterrupted, until today. Its importance is attested not only by splendid architectural finds, but also by the numerous votive offerings dedicated to the deity worshipped in the sanctuary during all its long history, but especially during the earlier periods.
The importance of the buildings discovered at Iria is so great that scientific discussion on the subject has taken a central place in international archaeological bibliography and in handbooks on ancient architecture.
The worship on the site has had a brilliantly testified and uninterrupted sequence (worship of Dionysos in antiquity and of the relative St. George later on). This sequence supports in a vivid way all other evidence that bears witness to a cultural continuity at Naxos, since 1500 B.C. onwards.

Naxos Town is Incredible! ❤️Travel Guide + Ancient Ruins. What to do in Naxos, Greece
We spend a day exploring the town of Naxos (Chora) to find out the best things to do!
We started right by our hotel Kalergis Studio ( which is situated directly on Agios Georgios Beach directly in town.
It was really windy there so we quickly headed into town to explore the cute streets. Naxos is full of smaller alleys with white washed buildings and colourful doors. We found ourselves in the main town square, home to a great Gyro restaurant called Gyro, Gyro so we stopped for some lunch. We got one chicken and one pork gyro, both were delicious.
After we ate we did a bit of shopping (Instagram hat!) and made our way down to the port to explore the boardwalk area which is lined with restaurants and cafes, you’ll also find loads of boats there as well as the ferry dock.
We then headed to what remains of the Apollo Temple (Portara)- it used to be a full temple but now all that remains is a very large doorway. The temple dates back to 500 BC. The temple is on a separate island but is connected by a walkway to the town.
After the temple we made our way through the small, narrow streets up to the castle, where we found a cafe with a great view of the town.
Lastly we finished up our day by grabbing some delicious ice cream at the Waffle House.
Athens Vlog:
Naxos Town:
The capital of Naxos (called Naxos Town or Chora) includes the island’s main port. Due to its position, it offers a variety of landscapes, which is quite unique for a Cycladic island town. Its proximity to the sea combined with the large number of tourist attractions and amenities make Naxos Town the most preferable place to be on the island.
As the ferry approaches the port, Portara immediately catches the traveler’s eye. Portara is actually the Greek word for “big door”. It is an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo. This is where, according to Greek mythology, Dionysus met Ariadne. Portara was built on a small rocky peninsula called Palatia. Portara and Palatia are a favourite afternoon walk for all those who love the view of an unforgettable sunset.
With a population of approximately 2000 people, Naxos Town is quite busy all year round. However, it becomes even more crowded towards the end of spring (starting as early as mid May) and throughout the summer (right to the end of September). Unlike other areas of the island, on Naxos Town, many bars, café, tavernas and restaurants are open all year round.
Closest and nicest beach on Naxos Town is the beach of Saint George (Agios Georgios in Greek). It is usually a crowded beach with lovely tavernas literally on the sand and many bar-café to enjoy breakfast or a late evening drink. You will find umbrellas and sunbeds in the largest part of the beach as well as a famous sports club towards its end, where you can enjoy your favorite sports or take surfing lessons. The beach iof Saint George is perhaps the most popular on the island of Naxos, ideal for people who are not strong swimmers and for families with young children.
Naxos:
Naxos is an island in Greece, with 429 square kilometres the biggest of the Cyclades group. It's located right in the centre of the Aegean Sea. Roughly 20,000 people live on the island and it's a popular tourist destination, including some fine beaches and ancient ruins as well.
Naxos has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny and dry summers and mild but wetter winters. Summers from June to September average around 25-27 degrees Celsius during the day and still above 20 degrees at night. The influence of the sea means that it never feels oppressively hot and nights are kept nice and warm as well.

Naxos 360 Temple of Demeter
Temple of Dionysus
A slow walk from the entrance to the Palm Court in the Park Lane Hotel to the ornate bar at the rear of the court. The hotel sits on the street that bears its name across from Hyde Park. Upon entering the court the ornate bar appears as an altar to the Greek god of libation, hence the title of the clip. Van Halen's Eruption adds the musical accompany one might expect to hear in the temple devoted to the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy.
''NAXOS PORTARA'' 2015 GREECE.
Lygdamis was overthrown in 506 BC and the temple, which was supposed to be at least a hundred feet tall, was never completed. Today all that remains of that temple is the Portara. The temple was supposed to be Ionic, 59 m long and 28 m wide with a peristyle of 6x12 columns with double porticos at its end. It is believed that this temple was to be built in the honor of Apollo, the Greek God who protected music and poets. Proof of this lies in the fact that the temple faces in the direction of Delos, which is believed to be Apollo's birthplace. However, some scholars believe that this temple was to be built in the honor of Dionysus, the God of wine and patron God of Naxos. The gate is around 6 m high and 3.5 m wide built with four separate columns. Each column weighs about 20 tons. During the Middle Ages, a church was built behind the Portara. Later under Venetian rule, it was dismantled so that the marble could be used to build the Kastro, which is a fortress built during the time of the Venetians and other monuments and buildings.WAS 500-600 BC.
The Sleeping Giant statue of Greece - Kouros of Apollonas Naxos
The Kouros of Apollonas, also called the Colossus of Dionysus, is a 10.7 metre tall unfinished statue of light grey Naxian marble with a weight of around 80 tonnes. It is located in an ancient quarry near Apollonas, a small town in the northern part of Naxos, one of the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean Sea.

Dionysus and the Pirates, the Dionysus Cup by Exekias (Ancient Art Podcast 90)
In yet another nod to alcoholic inebriation's polymorphic magical potency, we encounter one of my favorite tales of the god of wine, ecstasy, reverie, and madness ... Dionysus. Here we learn the tale of Dionysus versus the Pirates as originally recounted in Homeric Hymn number 7 and alluded to on the exquisite black-figure Dionysus Cup kylix by the master painter and potter Exekias.
