The temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, who was also responsible for the construction of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of Heaven during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor in the 16th century. Jiajing also built three other prominent temples in Beijing, the Temple of Sun (日壇) in the east, the Temple of Earth (地壇) in the north, and the Temple of Moon (月壇) in the west. The Temple of Heaven was renovated in the 18th century under the Qianlong Emperor. By then, the state budget was insufficient, so this was the last large-scale renovation of the temple complex in imperial times.
The temple was occupied by the Anglo-French Alliance during the Second Opium War. In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, the Eight Nation Alliance occupied the temple complex and turned it into the force's temporary command in Beijing, which lasted for one year. The occupation desecrated the temple and resulted in serious damage to the building complex and the garden. Robberies of temple artifacts by the Alliance were also reported.[citation needed] With the downfall of the Qing, the temple complex was left un-managed. The neglect of the temple complex led to the collapse of several halls in the following years.
In 1914, Yuan Shikai, then President of the Republic of China, performed a Ming prayer ceremony at the temple, as part of an effort to have himself declared Emperor of China. In 1918 the temple was turned into a park and for the first time open to the public.
The Temple of Heaven was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and was described as a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design which simply and graphically illustrates a cosmogony of great importance for the evolution of one of the world’s great civilizations... as the symbolic layout and design of the Temple of Heaven had a profound influence on architecture and planning in the Far East over many centuries.

Temple of Heaven In China (Documentary)
One China, One Emperor, One God. Rising above the mist outside the modern city of Beijing, China, stands an ancient temple; a temple dedicated to the worship of an invisible and all-powerful God, Shang Di, the God of Heaven. A masterpiece of architectural and landscape design, this manificent structure serves as a mysterious reminder of a time when the spiritual heart of the Chinese nation was much different than it is today. A time when China was ruled not by just one Emperor, but by one God.
Temple of Heaven - Beijing, China
The Temple of Heaven is considered the most holy of Beijing's imperial temples. It has been described as a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design.
The Temple of Heaven has also been listed as World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Temple of Heaven was built in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1420) by the emperor Zhu Di in the royal garden. Once a year, at winter solstice, the emperors came here to worship Heaven and to solemnly pray for a good harvest.
The design of the Temple of Heaven complex, true to its sacred purpose, reflects the mystical cosmological laws believed to be central to the workings of the universe. Both the overall arrangement and the buildings themselves reflect the relationship between sky and earth, the core of understanding of the Universe at that time.
Hence, complex numerological permutations operate within its design. For example, because the number nine was considered to be the most powerful, the slabs forming the Circular Altar have been laid in multiples of nine.
Similarly, within the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the interior twenty-eight columns are divided into four central pillars to represent the seasons, twelve inner columns to represent the months, and twelve outer columns to represent the two hour sections that make up a day. There are many such examples of this intense numerology at play. Another interesting fact is that the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is built completely without nails.
Early morning is the best time to visit The Temple of Heaven. It is well worth waking up for; you will have an interesting experience watching local people doing morning exercises.
Next to an older person practicing the slow and flowing movements of tai chi there might be a youngster performing vigorous karate-like punches and kicks; one group might be learning the ancient martial art of sword fighting, while another would be practicing a traditional dance.

The Temple of Heaven and Tiantan Park in Beijing (China)
Beijing, China.
Visit to the Temple of Heaven and the Tiantan Park.
The Temple of Heaven and Tiantan Park are located in southern Dongcheng District and it's possible to enter from 4 gates (East, West, North and South Gates).
The through ticket cost 34 CNY and it included the 3 scenic spots: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Echo Wall and the Circular Mound Altar.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a circular building and it was built on three levels of marble stone. It's where the Emperor prayed for the good harvests.
The Echo Wall has a perimeter of 193 meters. The wall is flat and it allows the sound waves to pass smoothly. If there are two people standing at the opposite side of the wall and one person whispers some words, the other one will be able to hear it.
The Circular Mound Altar is a circular stone altar. Every year on the day of the winter solstice during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) the emperors would offer sacrifice to Heaven.

Beijing Travel Guide - Temple of Heaven HD (English Subtitle)
The video shows how the emperor worshipped the God of Heaven in the past by imitation, which is a routine ceremony in Beijing right after the Chinese New Year.
The Temple of Heaven, founded in the first half of the 15th century, is a dignified complex of fine cult buildings set in gardens and surrounded by historic pine woods. In its overall layout and that of its individual buildings, it symbolizes the relationship between earth and heaven – the human world and God's world – which stands at the heart of Chinese cosmogony, and also the special role played by the emperors within that relationship.

The Sacred Meaning of China's Altar of Heaven
This feature-length documentary explores the first religion of China that existed before Daoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. The Altar of Heaven complex in Beijing, also known as Tian Tan, is the third most visited tourist site in China. Yet, very few in China understand that it was the place where the Emperor sacrificed and interceded for his people with the Supreme God who created all things. This most-high God is known as Shang Di, and Chinese history tells us that the imperial sacrifices to Shang Di go all the way back to the third millennium BCE. Can it be that the supreme God of China, who was worshiped by the Chinese people throughout most of their history, is the same Creator God of Judaism and of Christianity?
