Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens - Tour of the largest Ancient Greek temple
Part 2 of my “Athens Sightseeing” series. The music has been composed by myself for this video.
The temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, Greece is the largest ancient Greek temple. It is located in the heart of Athens, Greece. Only 500 meters from the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Greek: Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός, Naos tou Olympiou Dios), also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a monument of Greece and a former colossal temple at the centre of the Greek capital Athens. It was dedicated to Olympian Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, some 638 years after the project had begun. During the Roman period the temple -that included 104 colossal columns- was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world.

FIRST EVER Virtual Reconstruction for 'TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS', Athens
Original archaeological virtual reconstruction for ‘The Temple of Olympian Zeus’, Central Athens (The Olympieion) dedicated to Olympian Zeus. The Olympieion was to become the largest of all temples in Ancient Greece, rightfully so deserved for the function of paying homage to the ruler of all Gods. This temple dwarfed and thus humbled the neighbouring Parthenon in comparison. Of all the works of Antiochus, the Temple of Jupiter Olympius or Olympian (as the Romans called it) was the only one in the world, the plan of which was suitable to the greatness of the deity (Livy, History of Rome, XLI.20). The superstructure was situated on the bank of the river Ilissus southeast of the Acropolis. It was built on the site of an ancient Doric temple, the foundation of which had been laid out by the tyrant Pisistratus 6th century bc, but construction was abandoned several decades later in 510 BC when his son Hippias was expelled from Athens and a democracy established. Over three centuries later, in 174 BC, Antiochus IV Epiphanes (king of Syria and the vile person of Daniel 11:21) commissioned the Roman architect Cossutius to begin work again on the same ground plan. He did so with great skill and taste, says Vitruvius, constructing a temple of large dimensions, and of the Corinthian order and proportions (On Architecture, VII, Pref.15, 17). But when the king died a decade later, the temple still was left half finished (Strabo, Geography, IX.1.17), although it extended at least to the architrave of the columns still standing at the southeastern corner. The Olympieion finally would be finished by Hadrian, who had ordered work to begin during his first visit to Athens in AD 124-125 and dedicated the temple in AD 131-132 during his last visit, more than six centuries after construction first had begun. Importantly there was an internal chryselephantine statue of Zeus, modelled on the original by Pheidias at Olympia which was, according to Pausanias, one worth seeing, which in size exceeds all other statues save the colossi at Rhodes and Rome, and is made of ivory and gold with an artistic skill which is remarkable when the size is taken into account. Vitruvius characterized the Olympian Jupiter as octastyle (III.2.8) and dipteral (VII.Pref.15), that is, as having eight columns across the principal façade and two rows of columns on each side of the inner cella (or naos in Greek) that held the cult statue. Originally there were 104 Corinthian columns, arranged in two rows of twenty each on the long sides and triple rows of eight on the shorter ends. Everything including the vast Corinthian columns, internal cult of Zeus, and all statues are created by me from scratch, sculpting and moulding thousands of polygons to scale and likeness for the end result. Entire Archaeological reconstruction created by Christopher Antoniou ©.

Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens
The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Greek: Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός, Naos tou Olympiou Dios), also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a colossal ruined temple in the centre of the Greek capital Athens that was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, who envisaged building the greatest temple in the ancient world, but it was not completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD some 638 years after the project had begun. During the Roman periods it was renowned as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world.
The temple's glory was short-lived, as it fell into disuse after being pillaged in a barbarian invasion in the 3rd century AD. It was probably never repaired and was reduced to ruins thereafter. In the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, the temple was extensively quarried for building materials to supply building projects elsewhere in the city. Despite this, substantial remains remain visible today and it continues to be a major tourist attraction.

The colossal columns stand there to remind us of this great architectural work of its time.

Ancient Greece - Statue of Olympian Zeus
The statue of Olympus Zeus was a colossal, seated figure of the god Zeus, about 42 feet (13 meters) high, sculpted by the Athenian sculptor Pheidias about 435 BC. and placed in the temple of Zeus, in the Temple of Olympia. It was one of the most magnificent monuments built in ancient times, while the colossal statue, included in the Seven Wonders of the world until the final loss and destruction in the 5th century AD
The Statue of Olympian Zeus, which is one of the seven wonders of the world, was created by the famous sculptor of the time, Pheidias around 430 BC. and was placed as a devotional statue in the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, in ancient Ilia, west of the Peloponnese, near the banks of the Alfeios River. The hill above Altin was a place of worship of Saturn, the father of Zeus, hence the name of Cronios. The location is historic, since many battles have taken place since antiquity, and since 1000 BC. there dominated the church, one of the oldest temples of Greece and dedicated to Hera. Close to this ancient temple was also the stadium of the Olympic Games.
To build the statue of Olympian Zeus, it took two Olympic seasons, eight years. Philadelphia's technique was essentially based on wood, as the body of its statues was wooden and it was impregnated with a special liquid to prevent it from drying out. The wood was clothed with layers of gold and ivory plates, the eyes were of precious stones, and the golden mantle. The laurel crown on the head was of green enamel. Seated Zeus stood in the temple on three steps and estimated at 12 meters in height.

Temple of Olympian Zeus Olympeion |Myth | Athens
Temple of Zeus Panhellenis, Panhellenic, and the temple of Kronos and Rhea were added few years later. Hadrian’s Arch was built in order to signify the entrance to the sanctuary. Valerian Wall, which took its name by the Roman Emperor Valerian, enclosed all the edifices, in 260 A.D.
A simple mention of the temple’s dimensions can give us a clear idea of its titanic nature. The dimensions were: 110.35 x 43.68 meters. The Corinthian order columns were 17.25 meters high and had a diameter of 1.7 meter. The long sides of the temple had two rows of 20 columns each. The short side had a triple row of 8 columns. 104 columns at the total! In its cella were gigantic gold and ivory statues of Zeus and of Hadrian. In this way Hadrian was given equal status to Zeus!
Today, only 15 columns are still standing. There is another column which lies across the site. Some might argue that this is the proper penalty for Hadrian’s vanity. Some might only believe that nothing can fight back time’s passage. We must however take under serious consideration Vitruvius’ words that this temple materializes magnificence and majesty: This work is not only universally esteemed but is accounted one of the rarest specimens of magnificence.
Although nowadays remain only relics of the old glory, we can still be shattered by temple’s titanic proportions. A simple walk from Syntagma Square towards Plaka can give us then similar feelings to the feelings we could have walking around the Great Pyramid of Cheops!
