GREECE: EXPLORING the historic TEMPLE OF POSEIDON (at CAPE SOUNION, 5th century BC) ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's review the history of this magnificent Greek temple built the 5th century before Christ and located 60 kilometers outside Athens.
The temple of Poseidon at Sounion was constructed in 444–440 BC. This was during the ascendancy of the Athenian statesman Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens. It was built on the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, i.e., it had a front portico with six columns. Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Day Trip From Athens to Cape Sounion to See The Temple of Poseidon + Amazing Greek Food in Lavrion
We decided to take a family day trip from Athens to Cape Sounion, which is about a 1 hour drive from the Greek capital. Located at the southernmost tip of Attica, Cape Sounion (sometimes also called Cape Sounio) houses the Ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon. This is a great activity for those who want to escape and the hustle and bustle of Athens on a hot day, and just a fun and accessible activity for families in general.
Perched on the promontory of Cape Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon towers over the endless Aegean Sea with its seemingly infinite islands. It offers some of the most amazing views in the world, I don't believe my video does it justice in that department: we were truly left in awe by the amazing view here!
After visiting Cape Sounion on a blazing hot summer day, we were left starving. We asked our driver to find us a great spot for some delicious traditional Greek Food, and he brought us to the port city of Lavrion (Also known as Lavriou or Laurium), which used to be the ancient silver mine of the Athenians. There we ate at this small, understated yet beckoning restaurant called Psarou.
Wow! The meal was incredible!
They served up some amazing Greek Food, including one of the best grilled fish meals we ate in Greece. It was also great since it was really, really hot that day and a lot of the restaurants by the beach were over-crowded and didn't offer AC. With kids, especially one that was turning a little red, this was just perfect! Other travelling families will know just what I'm talking about... ;)
Hope you enjoyed watching and don't forget to hit the subscribe button for more family-oriented travel videos!
Side note: Robyn forgot her purse with many important documents and our credit cards at the restaurant. I want to give a huge shout out to PK Travel who went made the 1 hour drive later that evening from Athens and back to get it for her. Their customer service was so exceptional it left us emotional, they really went the extra mile for us (some pun intended) and this is by no means an ad for them. Give them a shout if you're ever in Athens and need to get around, here's their link:

Greece: Cape Sounion - Temple of Poseidon
At the southern tip of the coast of Attica, is what Homer called; Holy Sounion, Cape of Athens. The original, Archaic-period Temple of Poseidon was destroyed by The Persians and rebuilt in the fifth century during the time of Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens.
The Sounion Kouros, discovered in 1906 in a pit east of the temple, probably stood in front of the sanctuary. It is now in The National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Temple of Poseidon
The Ancient Greeks knew how to choose a site for a temple. At Cape Sounion, 70km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands on a craggy spur that plunges 65m to the sea.
Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens.
The frieze's fragments that have survived, is believed they illustrated popular mythological themes of amazonomachy (or a battle between Centaurs and Lapiths), gigantomachy, and the deeds of Theseus. They were carved in white marble from Paros.
Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honour Poseidon, God of the Sea. Built same year as the Parthenon – it is a vision of gleaming white columns. It is thought that the temple was built by Iktinos, the architect of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens' Ancient Agora.
On a clear day you can see Kea, Kythnos and Serifos to the southeast, and Aegina and the Peloponnese to the west.
Sailors in ancient times knew they were nearly home when they saw the first glimpse of white, and views from the temple are equally impressive.
British poet Lord Byron was one of many who fell under its spell, composing poetry in its honour.
Byron's lines from Don Juan: 'Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep/Where nothing save the waves and I/May hear our mutual murmurs sweep.'
Byron was so impressed by Sounion that he carved his name on one of its iconic marble pillars.
When you visit Cape of Sounion you will be mesmerised by the blankets of blues, reds and oranges that engulf the temple as the sun descends into the sea.
I used timelapse & hyperlapse techniques for the film.

DISASTROUS MOMENT @ TEMPLE OF POSEIDON, GREECE by CHEF LERY
Temple of Poseidon is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Greece because of such Poseidon's great story. Our trip to see the temple is supposed to be one of the highlights of our Greece Vacation but unfortunately an unforeseen event ruined our moment..
Temple of Poseidon - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Cape Sounion, Greece)
On our first day of landing into Athens, we drove directly down to Cape Souion to see the Temple of Poseidon! The area and views are beyond amazing! It was an interesting 40-50 mile drive from Athens (You'll see! lol) and very worth it!! The houses are very expensive in this part of Greece and it's a hidden paradise on the Aegean sea.
There is free parking at the temple, so no problems there! The temple is surrounded like a chain-link fence where by the main gate is closed during the night. However, you'll find many people hopping the fence at night and walking up to the temple (I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist!)
When we arrived, it was night time. There is a gift shop and cafe here and the cafe has an outdoor seating area which can be accessed 24/7. So we decided to crack open some ouzo and enjoy the lit-up temple at night! Bright and early the next day, we paid entry and visited the temple!
The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444–440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, i.e., it had a front portico with six columns.[9] Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 34: 15 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m (20 ft) high, with a diameter of 1 m (3.1 ft) at the base and 79 cm (31 inches) at the top.[10]
At the centre of the temple colonnade would have been the hall of worship (naos), a windowless rectangular room, similar to the partly intact hall at the Temple of Hephaestus. It would have contained, at one end facing the entrance, the cult image, a colossal, ceiling-height (6 metres (20 ft)) bronze statue of Poseidon.[11] Probably covered in gold leaf, it may have resembled a contemporary representation of the god, appropriately found in a shipwreck, shown in the figure above. Poseidon was usually portrayed carrying a trident, the weapon he supposedly used to stir up storms. On the longest day of the year, the sun sets exactly in the middle of the caldera of the island of Patroklos, the extinct volcano that lies offshore, suggesting astrological significance for the siting of the temple. The temple of Poseidon was destroyed in 399 by Emperor Arcadius.
Archaeological excavation of the site in 1906 uncovered numerous artifacts and inscriptions, most notably a marble kouros statue known as the Sounion Kouros[12] and an impressive votive relief,[13] both now in the Athens National Archaeological Museum.[14] A column from the temple can be seen in the British Museum.
Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο, transliterated Akrotírio Soúnio, pronounced [akroˈtirʝo ˈsuɲo]; Ancient Greek: Ἄκρον Σούνιον, Άkron Soúnion; Venetian: Capo Colonne, Cape of Columns) is a promontory located 69 kilometres (43 mi) south-southeast of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece.
Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823).

Wiki: The Ancient Greek temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, built during 444–440 BC, is one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft).
The original, Archaic-period temple of Poseidon on the site, which was built of tufa, was probably destroyed in 480 BC by Persian troops during Xerxes I's invasion of Greece. Although there is no direct evidence for Sounion, Xerxes certainly had the temple of Athena and everything else on the Acropolis of Athens, razed as punishment for the Athenians' defiance. After they defeated Xerxes in the naval Battle of Salamis, the Athenians placed an entire captured enemy trireme (warship with three banks of oars) at Sounion as a trophy dedicated to Poseidon.
The temple of Poseidon at Sounion was constructed in 444–440 BC. This was during the ascendancy of the Athenian statesman Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens. It was built on the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period.
