Burgas / Bourgas - Bulgaria
The town of Bourgas (population: 210 260) is the second district centre on the Black Sea coast. It is situated in the farthest western part of Bourgas bay and is 390 km east of Sofia.
Due to the low level of the coast there are three lagoon-lakes: Atanasovo lake, Bourgas Lake and Mandra lake. The town is situated between the sea and the first two lakes.
The climate of Bourgas is suitable for recreation -- mild winter and long sunny summer. The beaches are covered with dark black curable sand.
Bourgas ranks fourth in size in the country after Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.
Museums and theatres
The District Museum of History, founded in 1925, houses an archaeological hall with a rich collection of old colonies on the Black Sea coast. There are exhibits of modern history, and photos of eminent Renaissance leaders.
The Art Gallery and the Fine Art Gallery exhibit foreign and Bulgarian art.
The Ethnographic Museum has an interesting collection of traditional masks of Koukeri, costumes typical of the region and ritual accessories.
The Museum of Nature and Science contains many exhibits describing the geological characteristics of the earth, the region, the flora and fauna.
The Philharmonic, the Opera House, and the Theater of Drama are housed in three different buildings and function all through the season. Together with the Puppet Theater they outline the cultural atmosphere in the town.
Landmarks
Away from the busy centre of the city, the shady Sea Garden is a lovely place to stroll in hot summer days. A beautiful forked staircase in verdure leads from the park down to the central beach of the city. The sand is a mixture of various alloys of magnetite, which is the reason for its dark colour. The city also has a northern beach, located close to the Izgrev Quarter, and adjacent to the city's salt-mines.
The St. St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is interesting with its marvelous frescos and wooden alter.
Also interesting sights of Bourgas are the Armenian Church, the Catholic cathedral, the church St. Holly Mother, and the church St. Ivan Rilski.

Rila Monastery, Bulgaria, 2017
The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km (73 mi) south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m (3,763 ft) above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD), and houses around 60 monks.
Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe.
The monastery complex, regarded as one of the foremost masterpieces of Bulgarian National Revival architecture, was declared a national historical monument in 1976 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
The main church of the monastery was erected in the middle of the 19th century. Its architect is Pavel Ioanov, who worked on it from 1834 to 1837. The church has five domes, three altars and two side chapels, while one of the most precious items inside is the gold-plated iconostasis, famous for its wood-carving, the creation of which took five years to four handicraftsmen. The frescoes, finished in 1846, are the work of many masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the famous brothers Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf. The church is also home to many valuable icons, dating from the 14th to the 19th century. Porticos in the courtyard have Mamluk influence with the striped painting and the domes, which became more popular in the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Egypt.

Matochina Fortress | Bulgaria
After Mezek Fortress, I finished my tour at Matochina village, near the Turkish border (so close in fact that my phone was roaming between Bulgarian and Turkish networks) ...
Historical side of this fortress (from Wikipedia)
The Matochina Fortress (Маточинска крепост, Matochinska krepost), also known as Bukelon (Букелон), lies on a plateau to the northeast of the village itself. Bukelon was reportedly mentioned in reports about the Battle of Adrianople of 378. The only well-preserved part of the castle today is the inner fortress with the keep, which is 18 metres (59 ft) in height and dates to the 12th–14th century. The keep is a three-storey tower with arrow loops on all sides. The third storey was reportedly used as a chapel for the defenders. The keep was constructed out of stone and bricks. A cross-shaped brick monogram to the side of the entrance indicates that the fortress may have been reconstructed by Tsar Michael Shishman of Bulgaria (1323–1330). The keep is rectangular in shape with two protruding parts, one of which is semicylindrical. The Matochina Fortress was part of Adrianople's defensive system and protected the city from the north. Form here bulgarian army go to the Battle of Adrianople (1205).

In the courtyard of the monastery in 1335 today was built defense tower and a small one-nave church of the local feudal lord Protosebast Hrelyo. The tower is the oldest building in the monastery complex and belongs to the architectural style of the Tarnovo Artistic School. On top of the tower chapel St. Transfiguration with valuable frescoes of the 30 years of the 14th century.
