From Wikipedia - Baalbek (/ˈbɑːlbɛk/),[1] properly Baʿalbek[2] (Arabic: بعلبك‎, romanized: Ba’labakk, Syriac-Aramaic: ܒܥܠܒܟ) and also known as Balbec,[3] Baalbec[4] or Baalbeck,[5] is a city located east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about 85 km (53 mi) northeast of Beirut. It is the capital of Baalbek-Hermel Governorate.[6] In Greek and Roman times Baalbek was also known as Heliopolis. In 1998 Baalbek had a population of 82,608, mostly Shia Muslims, followed by Sunni Muslims and Christians.[7]

It is home to the Baalbek temple complex which includes two of the largest and grandest Roman temple ruins: the Temple of Bacchus and the Temple of Jupiter. It was inscribed in 1984 as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ancient ruins around the world have withstood the test of time and remain standing for academics and laymen alike to ponder and study. Many of the methods used to create these ancient cities, temples, and monuments remain rather mysterious and unexplained. The Archive’s Unexplained Structures Series endeavors to acquaint the viewer with these locations and present some of the potential alternative explanations for their existence.

Approximately 86 kilometers northeast of the city of Beirut in eastern Lebanon stands the temple complex of Baalbek. Situated atop a high point in the fertile Beqaa valley, the ruins are one of the most extraordinary and enigmatic holy places of ancient times. Long before the Romans conquered the site and built their enormous temple of Jupiter, long even before the Phoenicians constructed a temple to the god Baal, there stood at Baalbek the largest stone block construction found in the entire world.

Baalbeck, Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure, can be counted among the wonders of the ancient world. The largest and m inost noble Roman temples ever built, they are also among the best preserved.
Towering high above the Beqaa plain, their monumental proportions proclaimed the power and wealth of Imperial Rome.
The gods worshipped here, the Triad of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, were grafted onto the indigenous deities of Hadad, Atargatis and a young male god of fertility. Local influences are also seen in the planning and layout of the temples, which vary from the classic Roman design.

Over the centuries Baalbeck's monuments suffered from theft, war and earthquakes, as well as from numerous medieval additions.
Fortunately, the modern visitor can see the site in something close to its original form thanks to work in the past hundred years by German, French & Lebanese archaeologists.



Baalbeck is located on two main historic trade routes, one between the Mediterranean coast and the Syrian interior and the other between northern Syria and northern by Palestine.
Today the city, 85 kilometers from Beirut, is an important administrative and economic center in the northern Beqaa valley.

The Temple of Jupiter is one of the most impressive Temples in Baalbek. It measures 88x48 meters and stands on a podium 13 meters above the surrounding terrain and 7 meters above the courtyard. It is reached by a monumental stairway. Originally surrounded by 54 external columns, most of these now lie in fragments on the ground. The Podium is built with some of the largest stone blocks ever hewn. On the west side of the podium is the “Trilithon”, a celebrated group of three enormous stones weighing about 800 tons each.

The massive foundation stones beneath the Roman Temple of Jupiter are the great mystery of the ruins of Baalbek. The origins and importance of the sight are unknown, the initial site wasn’t constructed by Romans, and before the Romans there was no known civilization that would have the technology to build such a massive monument. Nothing puzzles archaeologists so much as impracticality, and although the karst topography of Baalbek demands strong foundation stones, and although one big stone is easier to move than many smaller stones, the pillars holding up the temple’s podium are bigger than they need to be.

Baalbek is an ancient Phoenician city located in what is now modern day Lebannon, north of Beirut.

Historic temples and places are one of the most visible features of the world heritage site.

Lebanese archaeologists have unearthed a number of Roman sarcophagi in the ancient city of Baalbeck.

The stone coffins, dating back to the 3rd or 4th century A-D, were discovered as infrastructure work was being carried out in the city.

Archaeologists think they were probably part of a Roman necropolis.

The Roman ruins of Baalbeck in eastern Lebanon are world famous.

These temples, dedicated to the Roman gods, Jupiter and Bacchus, are some of the biggest and best preserved in the world.

Now that the fighting in the Lebanon is largely over, they are once again open-air museums for groups of eager tourists.

Lebanese archaeologists have recently unearthed a new discovery: a number of Roman sarcophagi, buried beneath a street, about one-and-a-half miles from the temples.

The stone coffins are believed to date back to the 3rd or 4th century A-D.

The first sarcophagus to be unearthed contained the body of a teenage girl.She was wearing a gold burial necklace, made of 53 wafer-thin gold pieces, each in the shape of a grape leaf.

A local woman described what she saw being removed from the stone coffins.

At the beginning they found an empty casket and then second they found a golden ring, a letter, a necklace and something like a sword.

Around the body were these nine glass perfume bottles and lachrymatories, containing the tears of people burying the dead.

Archaeologists also found these eight tiny masks -- one of Jupiter -- which would have served as icons for exorcism.

We hope to find more objects inside those sarcophaguses and I suppose it's a necropolis of the Roman period and maybe they used this necropolis afterwards in the Byzantine period. You know the importance also of the monuments of Lebanon is not only the presence of one period especially in Baalbeck but the presence of different periods one on top of another.

Tourists are slowly trickling back into the Lebanon now that the war has ended, in all but the south of the country.

Even the Japanese are visiting Baalbeck -- apparently undeterred by Israel's 16-day offensive against the Lebanon in April.

And it's not just the ruins that attract the tourists.

The Lebanese government is now hoping that the country's wealth of ancient architectural treasures will lure the tourists back in ever greater numbers.
