Japan Travel: Kashihara Shrine one of most popular Nara shrines, Nara17
Japan Travel: Kashihara Shrine one of most popular Nara shrines, Nara17
Kashihara Shrine was established in 1889 to enshrine Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor. It is believed that Jimmu ascended the throne at the spot where the shrine now stands. Despite the fact that it was constructed relatively recently, Kashihara Shrine is an important and very popular shrine. It is situated in a preserved forest sanctuary at the foot of Mount Unebi, one of the three Yamato mountains.
The shrine grounds are extensive which contain pleasant paths leading through the forest that surrounds the buildings. Emperor Meiji donated two buildings from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the shrine at the time of construction. One of the two building is today used as the shrine's main hall (honden), which can be viewed from the prayer hall (haiden) from some distance away.
Hours: 6:30 to 17:00 (It varies depending on season.)
Closed: Opened all year round.

CHERRY BLOSSOM IN MATSUMOTO CITY #4
CHERRY BLOSSOM IN MATSUMOTO CITY , NAGANO KEN , JAPAN
EC2003 - FrPaulGlynn - ForgiveUsAsWeForgiveThose
In 2003 Father Paul Glynn SM gave two presentations at our Convention; this is the first of them. The promotional blurb about Fr Glynn that year follows:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An Australian Marist priest since 1955, Fr Paul was inspired to commit himself to a mission of reconciliation with the Japanese people, the defeated of World War II, spending 21 years there at Marist Missions where he was deeply involved in a mission of reconciliation with the Japanese people after World War 2. He organised the first Japan-Australia sister city link between Lismore and Yamato Takada. His work organising cultural exchanges with the Japanese continues to this day. He visited jailed members of the Japanese Red Army, after they had launched a terrorist attack on Tel Aviv airport in 1972 in which 26 people were killed. Most notably he was able to lead Kozo Okamoto, one of the terrorists responsible for the killings, to repentance. Okamoto asked that Fr Glynn request the families of the victims to forgive him. . Back in Australia, where he was Chaplain at St Joseph's Boarding College, Hunters Hill, and subsequently an active retreat Master, he still fits in extended visits particularly at Nara and Kyoto. He only speaks about himself as introduction, tending to doggedly focus on the needs of others be they spiritual or material, be it local families or those of the deprived Third World. He directs the profits from his many books 'Hearers of Silent Music' (on personal prayer), 'Thank you, Brother Fire' (on dealing with suffering), 'Psalms- Songs for the Way Home', 'A Song of Nagasaki' (the extraordinary witness of Dr Nagai), 'The Smile of the Ragpicker' (a carer of destitute children that sift garbage) and his latest 'Healing Fire from Frozen Earth' (stories of miraculous healings and conversions), to provide the financial assistance for such people. His appeal is in humility, simplicity and faithfulness, assisted by the gift of rapidly absorbing the culture of his audience- speaking its language and committing himself to its needs.

Picking Lotus Flower Rite 蓮取り行事 Yamatotakada 大和高田市 Renge e Kaeru tobi Gyoji 蓮華会 蛙跳び行事 Kinpusen ji Te
Picking Lotus Flower Rite - Hasutori Gyoji 蓮取り行事 Okuda, Yamatotakada, Nara-ken 奥田 大和高田市 奈良県 Frog Jumping Ritual - Renge-e Kaeru-tobi Gyoji 蓮華会 蛙跳び行事 Zao-do Temple, Kinpusen-ji Temple, Mt Yoshino, Nara-ken 蔵王堂 金峯山寺 吉野山 奈良県 by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom
The lotus picking rite (hasutori) is held in memory of monk En no Gyoja (born 634) and his mother. En no Gyoja was an idealised ascetic and the spiritual leader of mountain monks (yamabushi). En no Gyoja used to dedicate 108 lotus flowers to the mother’s grave.
For Buddhists, lotus symbolises the most exalted state of man. Buddha is said to have been born on a lotus leaf. In Buddhism one hundred and eight is the number of passions, which delude humans. Temple bells are rung 108 times at the end of the old year to symbolically cleanse from all false bonds. One hundred and eight is the number of beads on Buddhist rosaries to release a prayer from each empty attachment. And 108 is the number of temples in a pilgrimage to leave with each visit ties and allurements further behind.
After picking the flowers the yamabushi perform the memorial service and visit the grave of En no Gyoja’s mother. Then they leave for the Kinpusenji temple of Yoshino for the second part of the festival which is the frog jumping ritual (kaeru-tobi).
The unique and humorous frog jumping (kaeru-tobi) originates from an ascetic who erred in mocking local gods and Buddha. The deities were clearly not amused and hence a giant hawk kidnapped the man and abandoned him to the narrow edge of the steep cliff. The trembling and crying creature was in desperate for help. The priests of the Kinpusenji temple began to feel compassion for the by now chastened man. They saved the poor fellow by transforming him into a frog and then back into a human.
JET Program: Best Sakura Viewing Point in Japan -- Takada Park
And as I was editing the footage I took last week, those beautiful cherry blossoms are already withering...
When I thought that cherry blossoms were just flowers, I clearly wasn't expecting myself to turn into a fanatic who would go admire those beautiful guys four times a week for sunrise, sunset, and the evening. Be it white, pink, blue, or purple, the flowers looked unique from all angles!
Ft. 4000 trees blooming at the same time, hundreds of festival food stalls, my fave snapshots from Hanami.
