BRAND NEW! GWR Class 800 - Hitachi Intercity Super Express | Onboard Newport to London!
This video is property of Train_PlaneHub, RachaelMatt
2160p 4K HD!
Just its second ever day of passenger operations I couldn't resist an opportunity to go for a run on the Great Western's brand new class 800. The previous day to this (Monday 16th) 2x double sets entered service on the Great Western route. Operating just a handful of services between London Paddington & Bristol or Swansea.
This was filmed on Tuesday 17th October, their second operational day. Where I joined the 15:29 from Swansea to Paddington, at Newport as the 16:40 formed of sets, 800-006 + 800-005.
My overall first impression was very good! Very stylish, modern looking interior. Clear displays and easy accessibility throughout the train. Coaches themselves were very bright, spacious and extremely quiet (even at 125mph!). I did film a little around the seating area and also a walk through some of the carriage. I also filmed the vestibule area and toilet to give you an idea.
Once on the move you will notice an impressive display of acceleration, the 10 car set absolutely takes off from stations, even under diesel power. From Newport this service called at Bristol Parkway, Swindon, (Non-stop through Didcot at 125!), Reading and then into London Paddington. All of that is featured in this video.
One thing worth mentioning that I missed on camera, (partly because you don't even realise its happening) is that near Maidenhead, while still travelling at over 100mph, the train switches from diesel to electric. Once under the wires which have been completed, the pantograph is put up to power the train into London. My phone was on charge which was the main reason I noticed. It stopped charging momentarily as the power supply changes over. From them onwards the sound of the train is completely different. But quite an impressive feat, switching from diesel to electric with most passengers being completely unaware of the transition in power.
Concluding; I'm impressed with the new trains. Spacious, nice interior, clear announcements, incredible acceleration, smooth running and obviously as they stand, very clean & tidy. I'm a little bit sad that there is no buffet car or shop onboard to go to, just an at seat trolley. The buffet car was always quite an iconic part of travelling on an intercity service. Also it has to be said that the seats weren't overly comfortable for a long period of time. The HST's will always stand tall on comfort and will sadly missed now their days are numbered.
Thanks for watching!
