The Sahara is the biggest desert on earth. It takes its name from the Arab word for emptiness. In the dead heart of that emptiness there's a place called the Tenere. The Tenere takes its name from the Tuareg word for nothing. A nothing the size of France in the middle of an emptiness the size of the United States. It's no wonder the locals call this place The Land Of Fear”. David Adams retraces the trade routes of the people who call this stove-hot corner of the planet home.

Arbre du Ténéré
L'Arbre du Ténéré, known in English as the Tree of Ténéré, was a solitary acacia, of either Acacia raddiana or Acacia tortilis, that was once considered the most isolated tree on Earth—the only one for over 400 kilometres (250 mi). It was a landmark on caravan routes through the Ténéré region of the Sahara in northeast Niger, so well known that it and the Arbre Perdu or 'Lost Tree' to the north are the only trees to be shown on a map at a scale of 1:4,000,000. The Tree of Ténéré was located near a 40-metre (131 feet)-deep well. It was knocked down by a drunk truck driver in 1973.

Africa's Child: Niger--Desert Journey (Accessible Preview)
This is the life of the nomadic Tuareg in the Sahara Desert, as seen through the eyes of Djibrilla, a Tuareg boy. Each year the Tuareg men and boys travel 600 dangerous kilometers in a camel caravan across the desert to trade goats for salt. They must take everything they need with them. At the end of each day, Djibrilla helps unload the camels, prepare the evening fire, and cook the meal. Every morning, he must gather and reload the camels.
